e tool for indirectly measuring intracranial pressures in this high-risk population.Demodex folliculorum is a mite that commonly inhabits the pilosebaceous units of facial skin, particularly in a perioral and periorbital distribution. While typically an incidental and asymptomatic parasite, Demodex spp. are proposed to contribute to the pathogenesis of facial folliculitis, chronic blepharitis and papulopustular rosacea. Reports of demodicosis in anatomic locations other than the face are exceedingly rare. Here we report a 36-year-old woman with symptomatic Demodex spp. infestation of Fordyce spots of the labia minora. She was referred to dermatology after a 9-month history of tender red bumps on the vulva that would arise and drain over a 24 to 72 hours period, several times per week. Physical examination revealed erythema of the labia minora and introitus with a 4 mm, pink, dome-shaped soft papule on the left labium minus. Wet mount, microbiologic cultures and sexually transmitted infection (STI) screenings were unremarkable. Histopathologic examination revealed a well-circumscribed nodule of suppurative granulomatous inflammation arising in a background of mucosa with Fordyce spots, the majority of which were infiltrated by Demodex spp. Treatment with oral ivermectin and topical metronidazole cream resulted in a symptom-free period of 22 months. This case represents an unusual presentation of symptomatic Demodex infestation.
To assess in a cross-sectional clinical study the effect of antibiotics on the diversity, structure and metabolic pathways of bacterial communities in various oral environments in patients with acute primary infections.
Samples of saliva (SA), supragingival biofilm (SB) and from the pulp cavity (PC) were collected from teeth with acute primary infections and then grouped according to previous use of antibiotics (NoAtb=no antibiotics [n=6]; Atb=antibiotics [n=6]). DNA sequencing was conducted using MiSeq (Illumina, San Diego, CA, USA). The V1-V3 hyper-variable region of the 16S rRNA gene was amplified. A custom Mothur pipeline was used for 16S rRNA processing. Subsequent analyses of the sequence dataset were performed in R (using vegan, phyloseq and ggplot2 packages) or QIIME.
Twelve patients aged from 22 to 56years were recruited. Participants in the Atb group had taken the beta-lactamics amoxicillin (5/6) or cephalexin (1/6) for 2-3days. A total of 332 bacterial taxa (OTUs) were identified, belonging tisited.
The ecological niche had a strong influence on the bacterial content of samples from various oral sites. Previous exposure to antibiotics may exert an effect on the phylogenetic composition of SA. Metabolic pathways appear to be modulated by antimicrobial agents in SA and PC samples. The dynamics of host/microbial interactions in the apical region and the functional ecology of the infected pulp cavity should be revisited.Cereals and pseudocereals are a rich source of nutrients and trace elements, but their dietary bioavailability is low due to the presence of phytate (IP6), an antinutritional compound with the ability to chelate cations and proteins. Phytase is an enzyme that catalyzes the hydrolysis of IP6 and it is used as an additive improving the nutritional quality of grain-based foods. The aim of this study was to select lactic acid bacteria (LAB) isolated from pseudocereals with phytase activity, characterize their production and activity, and purify the enzyme. LAB strains isolated from grains and spontaneous sourdough of quinoa and amaranth were grown in the Man Rogosa and Sharpe medium where the inorganic phosphate (Pi) was replaced by 1% of IP6. Phytase activity was determined by measuring the Pi released from IP6. Phytase of Lactobacillus (L.) plantarum CRL1964 (PhyLP) showed the highest specific activity from 73 LAB evaluated. IP6 induces PhyLP production, which is at its maximum at the end of the exponential phase. PhyLP was thermostable and maintained its activity under acidic conditions. The enzymatic activity is stimulated by ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid, Co2+, and ascorbic acid. PhyLP was partially purified and showed a molecular mass of 55 kDa. L. plantarum CRL1964 and/or PhyLP have the potential to be included in the processing of cereal/pseudocereals based products for animal feed and/or the food industry improving its nutritional value.The free living larvae of anurans (i.e., tadpoles) are a key element in the evolution and diversification of this group, and as such, their morphology is an important element to understand the phylogenetic relationships of frogs. U0126 However, the lack of data on larval morphology prevents us from fully understanding larval evolution in several lineages. The Neotropical genus Proceratophrys currently comprises 39 species, but descriptions of the internal morphology of larvae in this group are rare and restricted to few aspects of their buccopharyngeal cavity, chondrocranium, and muscles. In the present study, I describe the internal anatomy of the tadpole of P. minuta and report a new remarkable myological character state for the species. Given the rarity of this material, the description of this species' buccopharyngeal and musculo-skeletal elements is based on two tadpoles in developmental stages 30 and 31. Several new apomorphic character states are described (a) the presence of a conical papilla in the interior of the nostril; (b) a row of five short, conical papilla preceding the tall, postnarial papilla; and (c) the m. mandibulolabialis inserting in the gular skin. This latter feature is a remarkable, newly discovered character state that had never been reported in the literature before and is probably related to a particular feeding habit of the tadpoles of this species. The function of the m. mandibulolabialis in P. minuta is unknown.The hepatitis A vaccine is recommended for all children greater than or equal to 1 year of age, however, the duration of vaccine protection is unknown and protection through adulthood is crucial to prevent symptomatic hepatitis later in life. We report on 25 years of follow-up of a cohort of Alaska Native individuals who were vaccinated in early childhood. We assessed the duration of vaccine protection by calculating the geometric mean concentration and proportion of participants with protective levels of IgG antibody to hepatitis A virus (anti-HAV) (≥20 mIU/mL) every 2 to 3 years. We estimated the amount of time until the anti-HAV dropped below protective levels using survival analyses. At 25 years, 43 of the original 144 participants were available, mean anti-HAV levels were 91.5 mIU/mL, and 35 (81.4%) had protective levels of anti-HAV. Using data from all persons and all time points, a survival analysis estimated 78.7% of participants had protective levels of anti-HAV at 25 years. The high level of protective antibodies in this cohort indicate that supplemental doses of hepatitis A vaccine are not needed 25 years after completion of the vaccine series.
