Results point to the need for interventions to enhance healthy regulation of positive affect in substance-using populations.

This study provides preliminary evidence that dampening increases risk for substance use among those with high levels of pre-treatment substance use. Findings are limited by the use of a general psychiatric sample, which did not include individuals seeking treatment for substance use disorders; future studies are needed to replicate this effect in individuals with substance use disorders. Results point to the need for interventions to enhance healthy regulation of positive affect in substance-using populations.A new method of calculating attentional bias from the dot-probe task measures fluctuations in bias towards and away from emotional stimuli over time using trial level bias score metrics. We assessed the stability and reliability of traditional attentional bias scores and trial level bias score measures of attentional bias across time in two five-block dot-probe task experiments in non-clinical samples. In experiments 1 and 2, both traditional attentional bias scores and trial level bias score measures of attentional bias did not habituate/decrease across time. In general, trial level bias score metrics (i.e., attention bias variability as well as the mean biases toward and away from threat) were more reliable than the traditional attention bias measure. This pattern was observed across both experiments. The traditional bias score, however, did improve in reliability in the later blocks of the fearful face dot-probe task. Although trial level bias score measures did not habituate and were more reliable across blocks, these measures did not correlate with state or trait anxiety. On the other hand, trial level bias score measures were strongly correlated with general reaction time variability-and after controlling for this effect no longer superior in reliability in comparison to the traditional attention bias measure. We conclude that general response variability should be removed from trial level bias score measures to ensure that they truly reflect attention bias variability.Scholars all over the world have produced a large body of COVID-19 literature in an exceptionally short period after the outbreak of this rapidly-spreading virus. selleck chemical An analysis of the literature accumulated in the first 150 days hints that the rapid knowledge accumulation in its early-stage development was expedited through a wide variety of journal platforms, a sense and pressure of national urgency, and inspiration from journal editorials.Aggregation of proteins towards amyloid formation is a significant event in many neurodegenerative diseases. Low-molecular weight oligomers are considered to be the primary toxic agents in many of these maladies. selleck chemical Therefore, there is an increasing interest in understanding their formation and behavior. In this paper, we build on our previously established theoretical investigations on the interactions between Aβ and lipids (L) that adopt off-pathway fibril formation under the control of L concentrations. Our previously developed competing game theoretic framework between the on- and off-pathway dynamics has been expanded to understand the underlying network topological structures in the reaction kinetics of amyloid formation. The mass-action based dynamical systems are solved to identify dominant pathways in the system with fixed initial conditions, and variations in the occurrence of these dominant pathways are identified as a function of various seeding conditions. The mechanistic approach is supported by thermodynamic free energy computations which helps identify stable reactions. The resulting analysis provides possible intervention strategies that can draw the dynamics away from the off-pathways and potential toxic intermediates. We also draw upon the classic literature on network thermodynamics to suggest new approaches to better understand such complex systems. When a policymaker introduces a novel policy, she will not know what citizens' choices will be under the policy, and citizens themselves may have to construct new choice sets. This imparts inherent ambiguity to novel policy implementation The policymaker does not know the probability that citizens will select actions that align with her policy. Assuming that citizens will follow a fixed approach may expose the policymaker to ambiguity neglect, which can result in unintended consequences. We provide examples and a simple formalization. Our results suggest that before implementing novel policies, policymakers should attempt to elicit preferences from citizens.Instead of the dire predictions of a post-pandemic world characterized by increased global risks, decoupling of economies, shake-up of global value chains, and the retreat of globalization, this article proposes that the changes induced by heightened nationalism and protectionism will be marginal rather than fundamental in nature. selleck chemical These marginally higher risks can easily be handled and ameliorated by multinational enterprises through alternate cross-border business strategies and emerging technologies. link2 Moreover, the paper gives reasons why the future world economy will need even more globalization.Restrictive measures imposed because of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic have resulted in severe social, economic and health effects. Some countries have considered the use of immunity certification as a strategy to relax these measures for people who have recovered from the infection by issuing these individuals a document, commonly called an immunity passport. selleck chemical This document certifies them as having protective immunity against severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2), the virus that causes COVID-19. The World Health Organization has advised against the implementation of immunity certification at present because of uncertainty about whether long-term immunity truly exists for those who have recovered from COVID-19 and concerns over the reliability of the proposed serological test method for determining immunity. Immunity certification can only be considered if scientific thresholds for assuring immunity are met, whether based on antibodies or other criteria. However, even if immunity certification became well supported by science, it has many ethical issues in terms of different restrictions on individual liberties and its implementation process. link3 We examine the main considerations for the ethical acceptability of immunity certification to exempt individuals from restrictive measures during the COVID-19 pandemic. As well as needing to meet robust scientific criteria, the ethical acceptability of immunity certification depends on its uses and policy objectives and the measures in place to reduce potential harms, and prevent disproportionate burdens on non-certified individuals and violation of individual liberties and rights. The geopolitics of pandemics and climate change intersect. link2 Both are complex and urgent problems that demand collective action in the light of their global and trans-boundary scope. In this article we use a geopolitical framework to examine some of the tensions and contradictions in global governance and cooperation that are revealed by the pandemic of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). We argue that the pandemic provides an early warning of the dangers inherent in weakened international cooperation. The world's states, with their distinct national territories, are reacting individually rather than collectively to the COVID-19 pandemic. Many countries have introduced extraordinary measures that have closed, rather than opened up, international partnership and cooperation. Border closures, restrictions on social mixing, domestic purchase of public health supplies and subsidies for local industry and commerce may offer solutions at the national level but they do not address the global strategic issues. link2 For the poorest countries of the world, pandemics join a list of other challenges that are exacerbated by pressures of scarce resources, population density and climate disruption. COVID-19's disproportionate impact on those living with environmental stresses, such as poor air quality, should guide more holistic approaches to the geopolitical intersection of public health and climate change. By discussing unhealthy geopolitics, we highlight the urgent need for a coordinated global response to addressing challenges that cannot be approached unilaterally.

To assess the current state of national ethics committees and the challenges they face.

We surveyed national ethics committees between 30 January and 21 February 2018.

In total, representatives of 87 of 146 national ethics committees (59.6%) participated. link3 The 84 countries covered were in all World Bank income categories and all World Health Organization regions. link2 Many national ethics committees lack resources and face challenges in several domains, like independence, funding or efficacy. Only 40.2% (35/87) of committees expressed no concerns about independence. Almost a quarter (21/87) of committees did not make any ethics recommendations to their governments in 2017, and the median number of reports, opinions or recommendations issued was only two per committee Seventy-two (82.7%) national ethics committees included a philosopher or a bioethicist.

National ethics (or bioethics) committees provide recommendations and guidance to governments and the public, thereby ensuring that public policies are infoeir actions not only on technical considerations but also on the ethical guidance provided by a national ethics committee. We found that, if the advice of national ethics committees is to matter, they must be legally mandated, independent, diverse in membership, transparent and sufficiently funded to be effective and visible.

To compare ambient air quality standards for the mass concentration of aerosol particles smaller than approximately 2.5μm (PM

) and exposure to these particles in national and regional jurisdictions worldwide.

We did a review of government documents and literature on air quality standards. link3 We extracted and summarized the PM

concentration limits effective before July 2020, noting whether standards were enforced, voluntary or target. We compared averaging methods and permitted periods of time that standards may be exceeded. We made a descriptive analysis of PM

standards by population, total area and population density of jurisdictions. We also compared data on actual PM

air quality against the standards.

We obtained data on standards from 62 jurisdictions worldwide, including 58 countries. link3 Of the world's 136.06 millionkm

land under national jurisdictions, 71.70 millionkm

(52.7%) lack an official PM

air quality standard, and 3.17 billion people live in areas without a standard. The existing stgh-pollution areas.

To estimate the economic cost of coronavirus disease 19 (COVID-19) in 31 provincial-level administrative regions and in total, in China.

We used data from government reports, clinical guidelines and other publications to estimate the main cost components of COVID-19 during 1January-31March2020. These components were identification and diagnosis of close contacts; suspected cases and confirmed cases of COVID-19; treatment of COVID-19 cases; compulsory quarantine of close contacts and suspected cases; and productivity losses for all affected residents. Primary outcomes were total health-care and societal costs.

The total estimated health-care and societal costs associated with COVID-19 were 4.26 billion Chinese yuan (¥; 0.62 billion United States dollars, US$) and ¥2646.70 billion (US$383.02 billion), respectively. Inpatient care accounted for 44.2% (¥0.95 billion/¥2.15 billion) of routine health-care costs followed by medicines, accounting for 32.5% (¥0.70 billion/¥2.15 billion). Productivity losses accounted for 99.
