The aim of the study was to identify predictors determining the course of COVID-19 and antibody response in elite athletes.

Observational study.

Routine medical screening with physical examination, resting ECG, and laboratory tests including antibody response was performed 12-68 days after the diagnosis of COVID-19 in 111 athletes of different sports.

Clinical symptoms were observed in 84% of subjects. The severity of COVID-19 was mild in 82% of athletes and moderate in 2% of cases. Athletes aged above 26 and male were more likely to develop symptomatic COVID-19. Asymptomatic subjects were younger and predominantly female. Antibody response was observed in 88% of athletes, and its magnitude correlated with time since diagnosis of COVID-19 (RT-PCR), fatigue, fever, and conjunctivitis. There were no differences in antibody response between groups distinguished by sports discipline (p = 0.50), and sex (p = 0.59), and antibody response did not correlate with BMI (p = 0.12), age (p = 0.13), the number of symptoms (p = 0.43) or their duration (p = 0.19).

Nursing home residents are often affected by pain. Pain assessment aims to determine pain intensity and quality. An evidence-based guideline on pain assessment in nursing homes was developed to support residents and informal caregivers in archiving an adequate pain assessment prerequisite to pain treatment.

The residents' guideline presents key recommendations that is comprehensible and accessible to residents and informal carers.

We conducted a content analysis.

Therefore, all recommendations of an evidence-based guideline for pain assessment in nursing home were evaluated on relevance for supporting residents' decision-making process.

Two researchers conducted the content analysis independently and as a result, 29 recommendations could be included. In addition, representatives of a support-group organization for patients with pain validated the derived recommendations.

The present residents' guideline of pain assessment consists of nine thematic categories, written in laymen's terms to enable older persons to make informed choices and optimizing their own pain management process.

Although there are comprehensive reviews in the literature regarding echocardiographic examination of the mitral valve, the authors present a practical stepwise algorithmic workflow to make objective recommendations. Advances in echocardiography allow for quantitative geometric analyses of the mitral valve, along with precise assessment of the valvular apparatus with three-dimensional echocardiography. In the precardiopulmonary bypass period, echocardiographers are required to diagnose and quantify valvular dysfunction, assess suitability for repair, assist in annuloplasty ring sizing, and determine the success or failure of the surgical procedure. In this manuscript the authors outline an algorithmic approach to intraoperative echocardiography examination using two-dimensional and three-dimensional modalities to objectively analyze mitral valve function and assist in surgical decision-making.Echinococcosis is a major public health problem and an emerging/re-emerging disease. We propose that the pre-mRNA splicing variation is an important regulator of plant HS responses (HSRs).Next-generation sequencing and computational biology has unravelled the different bacterial groups populating plant microbiomes. In addition, microbiologists have discovered many different mechanisms of cell-cell interactions that take place between bacteria. Bacteria use four prevalent mechanisms for intercellular interactions; however, their pertinent role in the formation and maintenance of plant microbiomes is currently unknown. We argue that it is overdue to speed up research on the biotic cell-cell interactions that take place between bacteria in plant microbiomes. This research will have a major impact on both fundamental sciences and translational agriculture via the development of bacterial prebiotic compounds as well probiotics competence, resulting in a more sustainable agriculture of economically important crops.

The aim of this study was to evaluate changes in transcutaneous oxygen pressure (tcpO

) and systolic toe pressure (TP) during endovascular intervention.

This was a single centre prospective, non-randomised, observational feasibility study. Patients with chronic limb threatening ischaemia (CLTI) due to infrainguinal disease scheduled for endovascular treatment were included between March 2018 and December 2019. TcpO

was measured continuously bilaterally at foot level throughout the procedure and at follow up. Specific time points during the intervention were chosen for comparison to baseline (before arterial puncture) average tcpO

level five minutes prior to percutaneous transluminal angioplasty (PTA); 10 minutes after PTA; and at completion. Bilateral TP was recorded using laser Doppler flowmetry before arterial puncture, at completion, and at clinical follow up. Although HER2 amplification has been associated with aggressive disease behavior and poor prognosis, the development and availability of a number of HER2-targeted agents has led to improved outcomes for patients with HER2-positive metastatic breast cancer, with data suggesting that overall survival has substantially improved in the past 2 decades. An increasing proportion of HER2-positive metastatic breast cancer is diagnosed as de novo stage IV disease. Patients with de novo metastases are traditionally classified in the general category of metastatic breast cancer and not analyzed as a distinct subgroup, though response to therapy and disease outcomes may differ from that of disease that recurred after early stage disease. Among patients with HER2+ de novo metastatic breast cancer, those who achieve a complete response have a prolonged progression-free survival and overall survival. Moreover, the fact that some patients achieve a prolonged durable response has raised interest and renewed discussion about whether cure is feasible in the complex context of metastatic breast cancer. In this review, available data associated with the possibility of cure in the population of patients with HER2+ de novo metastatic breast cancer are presented and discussed in detail.The disadvantage of the conventional protein-inorganic hybrid nanoflower production method is the long incubation period of the synthesis method. This period is not suitable for practical industrial use. Herein, protein-inorganic hybrid nanoflowers were synthesized using hemoglobin and copper ion by fast sonication method for 10 min. The synthesized nanoflowers were characterized via scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and Fouirer-transform infrared spectroscopy. The activity and stability of the nanoflowers in the presence of different metal ions, organic solvents, inhibitors, and storage conditions were also evaluated by comparing with free hemoglobin. According to obtained results, the optimum pH and temperatures of both hybrid nanoflower and free hemoglobin were pH 5 and 40 °C, respectively. At all pH levels, nanoflower was more stable than free protein and it was also more stable than the free hemoglobin at temperatures ranging between 50 °C and 80 °C. The free protein lost more than half of its activity in the presence of acetone, benzene, and N,N-dimethylformamide, while the hybrid nanoflower retained more than 70% of its activity for 2 h at 40 °C. The hybrid nanoflower activity was essentially increased in the presence of Ca2+, Zn2+, Fe2+, Cu2+ and Ni2+ (132%, 161%, 175%, 185% and 106%, respectively) at 5 mM concentration. The nanoflower retained more than 85% of its initial activity in the presence of all inhibitors. In addition, it retained all its activity for 3 days under different storage conditions, unlike free hemoglobin. The results demonstrated that new hybrid nanoflowers may be promising in different biotechnological applications such as catalytic biosensors and environmental or industrial catalytic processes.
