Meat consumption is gradually increasing and its impact on health has attracted widespread attention, resulting in epidemiological studies proposing a reduction in meat and processed meat intake. This review briefly summarizes recent advances in understanding the effects of meat or processed meat on human health, as well as the underlying mechanisms. Meat consumption varies widely among individuals, populations, and regions, with higher consumption in developed countries than in developing countries. However, increasing meat consumption may not be the main cause of increasing incidence of chronic disease, since the development of chronic disease is a complex physiological process that involves many factors, including excessive total energy intake and changes in food digestion processes, gut microbiota composition, and liver metabolism. In comparison, unhealthy dietary habits and a sedentary lifestyle with decreasing energy expenditure are factors more worthy of reflection. Meat and meat products provide high-value protein and many key essential micronutrients. In short, as long as excessive intake and overprocessing of meats are avoided, meat remains an indispensable source of nutrition for human health.Metal-halide perovskites have emerged as versatile materials for various electronic and optoelectronic devices such as diodes, solar cells, photodetectors, and sensors due to their interesting properties of high absorption coefficient in the visible regime, tunable bandgap, and high power conversion efficiency. Recently, metal-free organic perovskites have also emerged as a particular class of perovskites materials for piezoelectric applications. This broadens the chemical variety of perovskite structures with good mechanical adaptability, light-weight, and low-cost processability. Despite these achievements, the fundamental understanding of the underlying phenomenon of piezoelectricity in metal-free perovskites is still lacking. Therefore, this perspective emphasizes the overview of piezoelectric properties of metal-halide, metal-free perovskites, and their recent progress which may encourage material designs to enhance their applicability towards practical applications. Finally, challenges and outlooks of piezoelectric metal-free perovskites are highlighted for their future developments.Exquisite discoveries and new interpretations regarding an enigmatic group of cursorial avemetatarsalians led to a new phylogenetic hypothesis regarding pterosaur affinities. Previously thought to be dinosaur precursors, lagerpetids are now considered to be the closest relatives to pterosaurs. This new hypothesis sheds light on a new explorable field, especially regarding the character acquisition and evolution within the pterosaur lineage. In the present study, the morphospace occupation of distinct skeletal regions of lagerpetids within the morphological spectrum of avemetatarsalians is investigated. This approach indicates which portions of the skeleton are more similar to the anatomy of pterosaurs and which portions present different homoplastic signals. The analyses demonstrate that the craniomandibular traits of lagerpetids are pterosaur-like, the pectoral girdle and forelimb are dinosauromorph-like and the axial skeleton and the pelvic girdle and hindlimb are unique and highly specialized among the analyzed sample. So, despite the close phylogenetic relationships, the postcranial skeleton of lagerpetids and pterosaurs are very different. The occurrence of two distinct and highly specialized groups of pterosauromorphs coexisting with a wide ecological range of dinosauromorphs during the Triassic suggests pressure for new niches occupation.Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the number one cause of death in low-income countries including Haiti, with hypertension (HTN) being the leading risk factor. This study aims to identify gaps in the HTN continuum of screening, diagnosis, treatment, and blood pressure (BP) control. Sociodemographic and clinical data were collected from a population-based sample of adults ≥18 years in Port-au-Prince (PAP) from March 2019 to April 2021. HTN was defined as systolic BP ≥ 140 mmHg, diastolic BP ≥ 90 mmHg, or use of antihypertensive medication. Screening was defined as ever having had a BP measurement; diagnosis as previously being informed of a HTN diagnosis; treatment as having taken antihypertensives in the past 2 weeks; and controlled as taking antihypertensives and having BP less then 140/90 mmHg. Factors associated with attaining each step in the continuum were assessed using Poisson multivariable regressions. Among 2737 participants, 810 (29% age-standardized) had HTN, of whom 97% had been screened, 72% diagnosed, 45% treated, and 13% controlled. There were no significant differences across age groups or sex. Obesity (BMI ≥ 30) was a significant factor associated with receiving treatment compared to normal weight (BMI less then 25), with a prevalence ratio (PR) of 1.5 (95% CI 1.1-2.0). Having secondary or higher education was associated with higher likelihood of controlled BP (PR 1.9 [95% CI 1.1-3.3]). In this urban Haitian population, the greatest gaps in HTN care are treatment and control. Targeted interventions are needed to improve these steps, including broader access to affordable treatment, timely distribution of medications, and patient adherence to HTN medication.Currently, sepsis-induced cardiomyopathy (SIC) remains as one of the most critical clinical syndromes in terminally ill patients. Noncoding RNAs (including microRNAs and long noncoding RNAs) are implicated in both the onset and development of SIC. We herein investigated the functional role and molecular target of long noncoding RNA small nucleolar RNA host gene 16 (SNHG16) in an in vitro SIC model of H9c2 myocardial cells. We used lipopolysaccharide (LPS) as endotoxin to treat H9c2 cells to mimic SIC damages. Cell Counting Kit 8 and apoptosis assay were performed to assess cell proliferation and cell death. Quantitative real-time-PCR and Western blot were employed to examine gene expression level at mRNA and protein level. Dual luciferase assay is used to validate the functional interactions between SNHG16/mi-R421 and miR-421/suppressor of cytokine signaling 5 (SOCS5). Inflammatory cytokines were measured by ELISA. Superoxide dismutase and malondialdehyde measurement was performed to assess oxidative stress, which was further confirmed by 2',7'-dichlorofluorescin diacetate staining. Our data demonstrated that in the LPS-induced sepsis model of myocardial cells, SNHG16 overexpression downregulated the expression level of miR-421, which sustained the expression of SOCS5 to alleviate the adverse effects of LPS, such as apoptosis, pro-inflammatory cytokines, and oxidative stress. Our data suggest that SNHG16 functions as a ceRNA to maintain SOCS5 level by targeting miR-421, thereby attenuating LPS-induced myocardial cell damages. Targeting miR-421 or modulating lncRNA SNHG16 level may be leveraged as a beneficial strategy against sepsis-induced cellular damage in cardiomyocytes. The objective was to evaluate the correlation between N-terminal pro-atrial natriuretic peptide (NT-proANP), corin and the severity of target organ injury in hypertensive disorders of pregnancy. A total of 78 women with hypertensive disorders of pregnancy and 49 normotensive pregnancies were enrolled. The clinical characteristics, laboratory index and echocardiogram results were collected. NT-proANP, corin, sFlt-1 and PlGF levels were measured. A receiver's operating characteristics (ROC) curve was performed to evaluate the efficacy of predicting target organ injury in the HDP group. The NT-proANP, corin, and sFlt-1/PlGF ratio were increased in the HDP group (p less then .05). The area under the curve (AUC) predicted by NT-proANP and corin were larger than sFlt-1/PlGF ratio (0.779, 0.867, and 0.766, respectively). The creatinine and urine protein were significantly increased, while the estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) was dramatically decreased in the HDP group (p less then .05 each). The left atrial diameter (LAD), left atrial volume index (LAVI), left ventricular posterior wall thickness (LVPWT), and left ventricular septal thickness (LVST) were larger in the HDP group (p less then .001 each). https://www.selleckchem.com/products/cx-5461.html The NT-proANP/corin levels were positively correlated with LAD, creatinine, and urine protein, and negatively correlated with eGFR in HDP group (p less then .05 each). Multiple regressions demonstrated that NT-proANP was an independent risk factor of LAD and urine protein, and corin was an independent risk factor of creatinine and eGFR in HDP group. NT-proANP and corin may be reliable biomarkers for evaluating the severity of target organ damage in the hypertensive disorders of pregnant patients.Triple-negative breast cancer is the most aggressive subtype of breast cancer and the incidence of depression in breast cancer patients is high, which leading to worse survival and increased risk of recurrence. The effect of antidepressants on breast cancer patients remains contradictory, which might be due to variations in antidepression targets. Therefore, there is significant value to explore the antitumor potential of antidepressants and discover new therapeutic targets for breast patients. The authors screen antidepressant-related oncogenes or suppressors by using siRNAs. After combining functional experiments with online database analysis, 5-hydroxytryptamine receptor 1A (HTR1A is selected with antitumor potential in breast cancer cells in vivo and in vitro. RNA-seq analysis and coimmunoprecipitation assays indicate that HTR1A interacts with TRIM21 and PSMD7 to inhibit the degradation of TβRII through the ubiquitin-proteasome pathway, thereby inhibiting the transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β) canonical and noncanonical pathway. In addition, HTR1A is an independent predictive factor for breast cancer patients. The combined treatment of HTR1A agonists with demethylation drugs may significantly improve patient survival. It is of great significance to clarify the function and mechanism of the depression-related gene HTR1A in breast cancer, which might provide a new approach for triple-negative breast cancer patients.Papillary thyroid cancer (PTC) has attracted much attention due to its high morbidity and severe metastasis. Long noncoding RNA ENST00000504230 (LncRNA ENST00000504230, known as LINC00958) was overexpressed in many cancers and associated with cancer development. However, its underlying mechanism in PTC remains unclear. PTC tissues and corresponding adjacent tissues were collected for measuring the expression of LINC00958 and miR-627. MiR-627 and TRIM44 expressions were measured in in vitro cultured PTC cell lines (B-cpap and IHH4 cells) transfected with sh-LINC00958 or miR-627 mimic using RT-qPCR and western blot. Cell proliferation, migration, and invasion were measured by 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyl-tetrazolium bromide (MTT) and Transwell assays, respectively. Dual-luciferase reporter assay was performed to evaluate the target association between miR-627 and TRIM44. LINC00958 was up-regulated in PTC tissues and cells, while the expression of miR-627 was lowly expressed. Knockdown of LINC00958 inhibited the proliferation, migration, and invasion by elevating miR-627 expression in PTC cells.
