Colorectal cancer (CRC) is one of the most prevalent, most lethal cancers in the world. Increasing evidence suggests that the intestinal microbiota is closely related to the pathogenesis and prognosis of CRC. The normal microbiota plays an essential role in maintaining gut barrier function and the immune microenvironment. Recent studies have identified carcinogenic bacteria such as enterotoxigenic Bacteroides fragilis (ETBF) and Streptococcus gallolyticus (S. gallolyticus), as well as protective bacterial such as Akkermansia muciniphila (A. muciniphila), as potential targets of CRC treatment. Gut microbiota modulation aims to restore gut dysbiosis, regulate the intestinal immune system and prevent from pathogen invasion, all of which are beneficial for CRC prevention and prognosis. The utility of probiotics, prebiotics, postbiotics, fecal microbiota transplantation and dietary inventions to treat CRC makes them novel microbe-based management tools. In this review, we describe the mechanisms involved in bactcs, prebiotics, postbiotics, fecal microbiota transplantation and dietary inventions to treat CRC makes them novel microbe-based management tools. In this review, we describe the mechanisms involved in bacteria-derived colorectal carcinogenesis and summarized novel bacteria-related therapies for CRC. In summary, we hope to facilitate clinical applications of intestinal bacteria for preventing and treating CRC.
The superficial temporal artery (STA) frontal branch flap is susceptible to venous congestion because of its unpredictable and variable outflow. The authors applied indocyanine green angiography in identifying the superficial temporal vessels to help surgeons with proper flap designs to avoid severe complications. A retrospective review from 2015 to 2020 was conducted. All the patients who underwent indocyanine green angiography before forehead flap transfer for facial defect reconstruction were reviewed. The STA and vein were observed using indocyanine green angiography preoperatively. The relationship between the artery and vein was investigated. The venous anatomy was analyzed to guide the pedicle design. The survival of the flap and complications were assessed. A total of 12 patients were identified and included in this study. Indocyanine green angiography allows clear visualization of the detailed anatomy of the STA and vein. The frontal branch of the vein had great variations and generally diverged frons. Indocyanine green angiography provided accurate localization of the superficial temporal vessels. This technique may be helpful in the precise planning forehead flap surgeries and in avoiding the risk of venous congestion.
This study aimed to evaluate the effects of chlorhexidine, metronidazole, and ozone application on the healing of palatal wounds in diabetic rats. A defect in the form of a 4 mm-diameter wound was created on the palatal mucosa of 84 adult female Wistar albino rats, which were randomly divided into 4 groups control, chlorhexidine, metronidazole, and ozone groups. The animals were euthanized after 3, 6, and 10 days, and wound closure was histologically assessed. On day 3, polymorphonuclear leukocytes were significantly higher in the control group than in the chlorhexidine and ozone groups (P < 0.05). Fibrosis was higher in the ozone group than in the control and chlorhexidine groups (P < 0.05). Vascular endothelial growth factor was higher in the metronidazole and ozone groups than in the control group (P < 0.05). On day 6, the quantity of polymorphonuclear leukocytes was higher in the control, metronidazole, and chlorhexidine groups than in the ozone group (P < 0.05). Vascular endothelial growth s suggest that ozone supplementation can be an alternative therapy to chlorhexidine in impaired wound healing in diabetes mellitus.
Facial feminization surgery (FFS) is effective at treating gender dysphoria associated with anthropometrically masculine facial features. For many transgender women, FFS is a crucial component of the gender transition process. The purpose of this study is to report our experience with a pragmatic technique for simultaneous mid- and lower-face feminization by zygomatic osteotomy malarplasty and reduction mandibuloplasty.
The technique to perform zygomatic osteotomy malarplasty and reduction mandibuloplasty is described, utilizing harvested bone from the mandible for bone grafting the zygomatic osteotomy gap. A retrospective chart review was performed for patients who underwent simultaneous middle and lower FFS using the described technique. Independent reviewers evaluated cropped preoperative and postoperative photographs of the mid and lower face and assigned each photograph a "femininity score."
Seventeen transgender women underwent simultaneous zygomatic osteotomy malarplasty and reduction mandibuloplasty over the study period with adequate follow-up (average 11.1 months). Transient nerve weaknesses were the primary complications noted. A statistically significant improvement in femininity score was reported in postoperative photographs, compared to preoperative photographs (P < 0.01).
The technique described in this study is an effective application of craniofacial approaches and techniques for feminizing the facial skeleton in transgender women by utilizing harvested mandibular bone for simultaneous malarplasty.

Plexiform variants of neurofibromas and schwannomas are rare and typically arise in superficial soft tissues in the head and neck region. The treatment of these tumors is challenging and no generally accepted guidelines exist for their optimal management. The purpose of this study was to review the management and long-term prognosis of head and neck plexiform neurofibromas and schwannomas at 2 tertiary care academic hospitals in Finland over a 31-year period. The pathology files were searched for plexiform neurofibromas and schwannomas between the years 1990 and 2020. The case notes were reviewed for full management details. Two plexiform schwannomas and 6 plexiform neurofibromas were identified. Five of the 6 plexiform neurofibromas were managed operatively. All patients with a surgically managed plexiform neurofibroma underwent multiple operations. Sclerotherapy abolished 1 patient's cutaneous plexiform neurofibromas. The management of plexiform neurofibromas and plexiform schwannomas remains challenging.as. The management of plexiform neurofibromas and plexiform schwannomas remains challenging. Sclerotherapy may offer a promising management option for cutaneous plexiform neurofibromas.
This thesis addresses a neglected aspect of bioinformatics research of hemifacial microsomia (HFM). Existing research stops short of prediction based on big data. This study combines multiple databases to explore underlying pathogenesis using bioinformatic approach.
The research consisted of multiple bioinformatic methods, included pathogenic genes analyses, protein-protein interaction network construction, functional enrichment, and mining target genes related miRNA, for studying pathogenic genes of HFM.
Total of 140 genes were identified as potential genes in the study. The protein-protein interaction networks for pathogenic genes were constructed, which contained 138 nodes and 243 edges with RAF1, MAP2K1, MAP2K2, MAPK3, MAPK1, EGFR, BRAF, LMNA, ESPR1, and SFN as the hub genes. mTOR inhibitor These genes were discovered significantly enriched in MAPK pathway. Besides, the whole of interactions between miRNAs and the top 5 hub genes were revealed.
Our results indicated that occurrence of HFM is attributed to a variety of genes. Furthermore, the interactions of pathogenic genes were further elucidated by using bioinformatics approach. It reveals the MAPK pathway play an essential role in its pathogenesis. It may provide a novel perspective on better understanding the pathogenesis and more accurate early screening of HFM.

Cranioplasty is a critical intervention to restore the calvarium using autologous or alloplastic materials with single-stage composite scalp and calvarial reconstruction reserved for complex cases. This study aims to identify 30-day outcomes in scalp and calvarial reconstruction using the American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program database.
The authors conducted a retrospective analysis of the 2010 to 2018 American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program database. Adult patients who underwent cranioplasty were identified using current procedural terminology coding and included by exposure type (autologous, alloplastic, composite, or other). Subjects with missing exposure or outcome data were excluded. Primary outcome was 30-day reoperation, whereas secondary outcomes were 30-day unplanned readmission and transfusion. Univariate analysis was completed to assess differences in demographics, comorbidities, and postoperative complications. Multivariabloperation with no difference in readmission.
Cranioplasty is an increasingly common procedure. Alloplastic cranioplasty is associated with decreased 30-day transfusion requirement, whereas single-stage composite reconstruction is a viable option and associated with decreased 30-day reoperation with no difference in readmission.
Reconstruction of complete bilateral maxillary defects (CBMDs) can be challenging due to the extensive loss of bone and soft tissues. This is a retrospective case series of 46 consecutive patients with CBMDs that were reconstructed with different microvascular free flaps. The authors aimed to evaluate the surgical outcomes and discuss the different reconstruction options in this case series. Thirty-six patients underwent reconstruction following ablation surgery for malignant tumors, 6 for benign tumors, 3 patients were treated for osteomyelitis, and 1 patient underwent free flap reconstruction for posttraumatic defects. Free fibula flap (n = 26) is the most commonly used reconstruction method in this case series, which was used in all defect types. This is followed by anterolateral thigh flap (n = 10), 5 rectus abdominis myocutaneous free flap, 3 radial forearm free flaps, and 2 composite free flaps. In this series, 44 free flaps survived, whereas only 2 flaps were lost. All patients could resume a soft di this series, 44 free flaps survived, whereas only 2 flaps were lost. All patients could resume a soft diet postoperatively. Reconstruction of CBMDs with vascularized free flaps is a safe and reliable procedure.
