Endocrine disrupting compounds (EDCs) in marine environments has become a major environmental concern. Nonetheless, the biological effects of EDCs on organisms in coastal environments remain poorly characterized. In this study, biomonitoring of EDCs in male fish Sebastiscus marmoratus was carried out in the Maowei Sea, China. The results showed that the concentration of 4-nonylphenol (4-NP) was below the detection limit, the concentrations of 4-tert-octylphenol (4-t-OP) and bisphenol A (BPA) in seawater were moderate compared with those in other global regions, and the possible sources are the municipal wastewater discharge. Nested ANOVA analyses suggest significant differences of the brain aromatase activities and plasma vitellogenin (VTG) expression between the port area and the oyster farming area. A new fish expert system (FES) was developed for evaluating the biological effects of EDCs on fish. Our findings show that the FES is a potential tool to evaluate the biological effects of marine pollutants.Droplet size substantially affects the fate of oil released from deep subsea leaks. A baseline dataset of volume-median droplet diameters (d50), culled from ~250 laboratory observations, is used to validate seven droplet-size models. Four models compare reasonably well, having 95% confidence limits in d50 of ~±50%. Simulations with a near-field fate model (TAMOC) reveals that the four best-performing models, with d50 of 1.3-2.2 mm, agree similarly with observed fractionation of petroleum compounds in the water column during June 4-July 15, 2010. Model results suggest that, had a higher dose of dispersant been applied at the wellhead during Deepwater Horizon oil spill (DWH), the d50 would have dropped by an order of magnitude, reducing surfacing C1-C9 volatiles by 3.5×. Model uncertainty is found to be substantial for DWH-like blowouts treated with chemical dispersants, suggesting the need for further droplet-size model improvement.Human growth has caused an unprecedented increase in artificial light at night (ALAN). In coastal habitats, many species rely on day/night cycles to regulate various aspects of their life history and these cycles can be altered by this stressor. This study assessed the influence of ALAN on the early (cyprid) and late (spat) settlement stages of the acorn barnacle Semibalanus balanoides, a species widely distributed in natural and man-made coastal habitats of the North Atlantic. A newly designed settlement plate, originally for studies in rocky intertidal habitats in the southeast Pacific, was adapted to measure settlement rates on man-made habitats -wharf seawalls- located in Atlantic Canada. Plates equipped with a small LED diode powered by an internal battery (ALAN plates) were used to quantify settlement rates in comparison to plates lacking a light source (controls). These plates were deployed for 6 d in the mid-intertidal levels, where adult barnacles were readily visible. ALAN and control plates collected large number of settlers and showed to be suitable for this type of man-made habitats. The number of early settlers (cyprids) did not differ between plates but the number of late settlers (spat) was significantly lower in ALAN plates than in controls. These results suggest that light pollution has little influence on the early stages of the acorn barnacle settlement but is clearly detrimental to its late stages. As barnacles dominate in many natural and man-made hard substrates, it is likely that ALAN also has indirect effects on community structure.

The coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic has caused a worldwide health and social crisis directly impacting the healthcare system. Hospitals had to rearrange its structure to meet clinical needs. Spain has been experiencing a shortage of working nurses. Student nurses in their last year at university were employed to help the National Health System respond to the COVID-19 crisis.

The aim of this study was to explore and understand the experience of nursing students' roles as healthcare aid in responding to the COVID-19 crisis.

A qualitative phenomenology design was used to explore undergraduate nursing students' perceptions of their experiences as HAs during the COVID-19 outbreak. Open face-to-face interviews were conducted to nursing students (n=10) in May 2020. Data was analyzed using the hermeneutic interpretative approach.

All participants were women aged between 21 and 25years. Seven main themes emerged learning, ambivalent emotions and adaptation were classified at a personal level; teamwork, patient communication, and unclear care processes were categorized under hospital structure; and coping mechanisms were part of external factors.

Of particular interest are the underlying interactions with biological consequences i.e. tick fitness, vector competence. In this study, we first sequenced the 16S rRNA bacterial phylogenetic marker in adult male ticks of Hyalomma lusitanicum collected from 5 locations in the province of Cáceres to explore the composition of its microbial community. Overall, 16S rRNA sequencing results demonstrated that the microbial community of H. lusitanicum is mostly dominated by Francisella-like endosymbionts (FLEs) (ranging from 52% to 99% of relative abundance) suggesting it is a key taxon within the microbial community and likely a primary endosymbiont. However, further research is required to explore the mechanisms underlying the interaction between FLEs and H. lusitanicum.Babesia microti is a zoonotic pathogen that mainly parasitizes mammalian erythrocytes. Oxidative stress can induce gene mutation, protein denaturation and lipid peroxidation, such as reactive oxygen species (ROS) induced by hypoxic environment and the host immune system. An antioxidase, B. microti thioredoxin reductase (Bmi TrxR), has been identified in B. microti. We used a combination of homology modeling and domain prediction to explore the functional sites of Bmi TrxR and found that TrxR has three domains. Constructed a mutant pool which His-tag were at the N-terminus (TrxR-Nhis, C105-Nhis, C110-Nhis, C105110-Nhis, C547-Nhis, C552-Nhis, C547552-Nhis) and the His tag were at the N- and C-terminus (TrxR-NChis, C547-NChis, C552-NChis, C547552-NChis). The proteins were expressed as His-tagged fusion proteins in Escherichia coli. The His-tag of TrxR C-terminus were affected the reaction with Trx. The inhibitory efficiency of DNCB was decreased for mutant C547, compared with recombinant TrxR, indicating that the action site of DNCB might be cysteine at position 547. These results indicate that the N-terminal active site of Bmi TrxR plays an important role in accepting electrons and promotes electron transfer. The C-terminus His tag of Bmi TrxR affected the electron transfer and the reducing activity of Bmi TrxR. The purpose of this study was to compare the progression of Primary Central Nervous System Lymphoma (PCNSL) in patients treated with methotrexate (MTX) versus those treated with a combination of Stereotactic Radiosurgery (SRS) and MTX. Progression was measured via brain lesion count and tumor volume.

This observational and prospective cohort study evaluated the outcome of SRS treatment of PCNSL in one hundred twenty-eight subjects. We analyzed baseline, prospective, and retrospective data of patients enrolled in the brain tumor registry between June 2010 and August 2017. Seventy-three patients were treated exclusively with MTX while the remaining fifty-five patients received a combination of SRS and MTX. Strict inclusion and exclusion criteria were established.

Mean survival rate for patients receiving combined SRS and MTX treatment was significantly higher (52.6 months) compared to the MTX group (19.8 months); p = 0.0029. At the 36 months follow-up, patients treated with SRS and MTX also had a lower rate of tumor progression (32.7 %) than the MTX group (95.9 %); p = 0.00192. Local tumor control was achieved in all patients treated with SRS. No clinical toxicity was observed in this group.

Clinical results obtained from this observational study highlight the potential effectiveness of SRS in the treatment of PCNSL. Although treatment outcomes have improved in the past years, additional evidence in the clinical design of randomized trials is needed to evaluate the strength of this treatment in specific situations.

Opto-chiasmatic (OC) cavernous malformations are sporadic lesions that are often misdiagnosed clinically and radiologically. Presenting symptoms range from incidental findings to the more frequent and dramatic "chiasmal apoplexy." The present study aims to evaluate the potential role of arachnoidal membranes of the basal cisterns in the onset of OC apoplexy. A possible mechanism resembling a compartment syndrome is discussed through the description of two cases of bleeding cavernomas.

We describe clinical, radiological, intraoperative findings in two cases of young patients presenting with OC apoplexy from bleeding cavernoma. The first was a 38-year-old man diagnosed with optic neuritis at the first episode of visual acuity deterioration. The second patient was a 22 -year-old woman who suffered two OC apoplexy episodes from a recurrence, which also presented with bleeding.

Both patients were operated on via pterional craniotomy and presented a postoperative improvement of visual symptoms. The second patient experienced deterioration 30 months after surgical resection due to rebleeding from a recurrence and required a second operation.
