Segmental absence of intestinal musculature (SAIM) is a rare cause of intestinal obstruction and perforation due to partial or complete defects in the intestinal muscularis propria in neonates and is occasionally observed in adulthood.

The first case of small intestinal stenosis derived from SAIM, which was difficult to differentiate from Crohn's disease (CD), is reported. A 4-year-old girl presented with abdominal pain, anemia, and a positive fecal occult blood test. She was initially diagnosed with CD and started on treatment. Because her gastrointestinal symptoms persisted, her previous pediatricians tried to carry out capsule endoscopy, but it was not possible because the patency capsule was retained. Therefore, she was referred to our institute and re-evaluated. The patency capsule examination was repeated to re-evaluate small intestinal passage, but it stagnated again. Abdominal ultrasonography showed a poorly deformable intestinal tract that narrowed rapidly from the dilated segment and had a thin and perforation, but also small intestinal stenosis. Although no other reports have demonstrated the usefulness of abdominal ultrasonography for the diagnosis of SAIM, the present report suggests that ultrasonography may be useful for differentiating SAIM from CD by close observation of the area around the small intestinal stenosis.

In the present case, SAIM involved not only intestinal ileus and perforation, but also small intestinal stenosis. Patients with liver cirrhosis typically exhibit abnormal coagulation parameters in conventional coagulation tests (CCTs). Rotational thromboelastometry (ROTEM) is a holistic blood coagulation assay. This method provides an insight into the global hemostatic capabilities and has been suggested to provide a better overview of the coagulation system in liver cirrhosis.

The goal of this study was to examine hemostasis in patients with stable liver cirrhosis (Non-ACLF) and in acute-on-chronic liver failure (ACLF) by CCT and ROTEM including agreement of both tests and the prospective assessment of test performance based on clinical outcomes in ACLF patients. Therefore, ACLF patients were additionally subgrouped by bleeding events. Fifty-five Non-ACLF patients and twenty-two patients with ACLF were analysed in this prospective cohort study.

Coagulation parameters analysed by CCT were outside the normal range in Non-ACLF and ACLF patients, but were significantly more aberrant in ACLF patients. Non-ACLF patients analysed by ROTEM revealed parameters largely within the normal limits, while significantly more ROTEM parameters in ACLF patients were affected. Maximum clot firmness (MCF) was significantly divergent between both patient groups and correlated well with levels of fibrinogen and platelet count. Using Cohen's Kappa coefficient κ, the strength of agreement between CCT and ROTEM analyses was determined to be fair for Non-ACLF patients and moderate for ACLF patients. Bleeding events occurred significantly more often in ACLF group with significantly reduced A10 and MCF.

The ubiquitous presence of short tandem repeats (STRs) in virtually all genomes implicates their functional relevance, while a widely-accepted definition of STR is yet to be established. Previous studies majorly focus on relatively longer STRs, while shorter repeats were generally excluded. Herein, we have adopted a more generous criteria to define shorter repeats, which has led to the definition of a much larger number of STRs that lack prior analysis. Using this definition, we analyzed the short repeats in 55 randomly selected segments in 55 randomly selected genomic sequences from a fairly wide range of species covering animals, plants, fungi, protozoa, bacteria, archaea and viruses.

Our analysis reveals a high percentage of short repeats in all 55 randomly selected segments, indicating that the universal presence of high-content short repeats could be a common characteristic of genomes across all biological kingdoms. Therefore, it is reasonable to assume a mechanism for continuous production of repeat. This model also contributes to the explanation of STR-to-genome evolution and is an alternative model that complements semi-conservative replication.

The brown planthopper (Nilaparvata lugens, BPH) and the small brown planthopper (Laodelphax striatellus, SBPH) are the most destructive insect pests within the family Delphacidae. These two species differ in their host range (SBPH can well colonize rice and wheat plants, whereas BPH survives on only rice plants), but the underlying mechanism of this difference remains unknown. High-throughput sequencing provides a powerful approach for analyzing the association between changes in gene expression and the physiological responses of insects. Therefore, gut transcriptomes were performed to elucidate the genes associated with host adaptation in planthoppers. The comparative analysis of planthopper responses to different diets will improve our knowledge of host adaptation regarding herbivorous insects.

Discovering single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) from agriculture crop genome sequences has been a widely used strategy for developing genetic markers for several applications including marker-assisted breeding, population diversity studies for eco-geographical adaption, genotyping crop germplasm collections, and others. Accurately detecting SNPs from large polyploid crop genomes such as wheat is crucial and challenging. A few variant calling methods have been previously developed but they show a low concordance between their variant calls.
