The combined analysis suggests that Cutaneotrichosporon yeast are the best suited to broad spectrum aromatic metabolism and support its development as a model system for aromatic metabolism in yeast.ABA and GA metabolism during incubation rather than hormone contents in dry seeds is the key to understanding secondary dormancy and germination of Syngonanthus verticillatus seeds. The mechanism of seed dormancy cycle, although very important for preventing germination during unfavorable periods for seedling establishment, is poorly understood in tropical species. Here, we used a perennial tropical species of the Brazilian campo rupestre, Syngonanthus verticillatus (Eriocaulaceae), to investigate the involvement of ABA and GA in modulating secondary dormancy of seeds buried in situ over time and the dynamic of these hormones during the incubation of dormant and non-dormant seeds. Hormone analyses were carried out with freshly harvested seeds and on buried seeds exhumed after 3, 6 and 9 months. Dynamics of ABA and GAs in dormant and non-dormant seeds during incubation (0, 12, 24 and 36 h) under favorable conditions for germination (at 20 °C in the presence of light) were also investigated. In addition, the effects of GA4 and fluridone were evaluated for overcoming secondary dormancy. Our results showed that changes in the contents of both ABA and GA4 occurred after burial, suggesting they may be related to the modulation of secondary dormancy/germination of S. verticillatus seeds. The application of fluridone was more effective than GA4 at overcoming secondary dormancy. We conclude that during incubation, de novo ABA synthesis and its consequent maintenance at high contents regulate the inhibition of germination in dormant seeds, while GA4 synthesis and ABA catabolism modulate the germination of non-dormant seeds. ABA and GA metabolism during incubation of both dormant and non-dormant seeds rather than hormone contents of dry seeds in the field is thought to be the key to understanding secondary dormancy and germination.After the introduction and the quick improvement of multidetector computed tomography technology, computed tomographic angiography (CTA) has become the imaging examination of choice for the first assessment of patients affected by lower extremities acute disorders. The right interpretation of CTA findings is essential to establish the best treatment management of each patient.Continuous surveillance has shown that H6 subtype avian influenza viruses (AIVs) are prevalent in poultry and occasionally break the species barrier to infect humans. It is therefore necessary to establish a specific, rapid and sensitive method to screen H6 AIVs. Epigenetic inhibitor In this study, a panel of monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) against the hemagglutinin (HA) of an H6 AIV isolate was produced. The purified mAbs have high affinity and specificity for H6 AIVs. An antigen-capture enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (AC-ELISA) and immunochromatographic strip were developed based on two mAbs (1D7 and 1F12). The AC-ELISA results showed high sensitivity with a limit of detection (LOD) of 3.9 ng/ml for H6 HA protein and 0.5 HAU (HA units)/100 µl for live H6 subtype AIVs. The average recovery of the AC-ELISA with allantoic fluid, respiratory specimens, and cloacal swabs was 91.907 ± 1.559%, 82.977 ± 1.497% and 73.791 ± 2.588%, respectively. The intra- and inter-assay coefficient of variation was less than 10%. The LOD of immunochromatographic strip was 1 HAU when evaluated by the naked eye, and the detection time was less than 10 min without any equipment. Storage at room temperature or 4 °C for 30 days or 60 days had no effect on sensitivity and specificity of the strip. Thus, the AC-ELISA and immunochromatographic strips described here could be a secondary method to diagnose H6 AIV infections with high specificity, sensitivity, and stability.Since 2014, novel non-GII.4 norovirus (NoV) genotypes continue to be reported as the main cause of outbreaks worldwide. In this study, we analyzed the epidemiological and genetic features of NoV outbreaks from July 2014 to June 2018 in Huzhou, China. A total of 450 stool samples collected from 51 AGE outbreaks were tested for NoVs by real-time RT PCR. Partial polymerase and capsid sequences of NoV-positive samples were amplified and sequenced for phylogenetic analysis. NoVs were found to be responsible of 84.3% of AGE outbreaks in Huzhou over the past 5 years. Most NoV outbreaks were reported in the cool months (November-March) and occurred in primary schools and kindergartens. Changes in the diversity of genotypes and the distribution of predominant types were observed in recent years. At least eight genotypes were identified, and 91.9% of the genotyped outbreaks were caused by non-GII.4 strains. The top three circulating genotypes during the study period were GII.2[P16], GII.3[P12], and GII.17[P17]. The predominant NoV genotypes in outbreaks have changed from GII.4 variants to GII.17[P17] in 2014-2015, GII.3[P12] in 2015-2016, and then GII.2[P16] in 2016-2018. Non-GII.4 NoVs play an increasingly important role in outbreaks in Huzhou. Continuous surveillance is needed to monitor the emergence of novel NoV strains and help control NoV outbreaks in the next epidemic season.INTRODUCTION Urinary tract infection (UTI) is highly prevalent in the frail elderly population. This review aimed to outline the diagnostic, treatment, and prevention of UTI in the frail aging population. METHODS Pubmed and Web of Science search to identify publications until March 2019 relating to the management of UTI in the elderly population was performed. A narrative review of the available literature was performed. RESULTS 64 publications were considered as relevant and included in this review. The diagnosis of symptomatic UTI in the old and fragile could be challenging. Routine screening and antimicrobial therapy for asymptomatic bacteriuria should not be recommended for frail elderly patients. Cautious choice of antibiotics should be guided by uropathogen identified by culture and sensitivity. Understanding local antibiotic resistance rates plays a fundamental part in selecting appropriate antimicrobial treatment. Impact of associated adverse effect, in particular those with effects on cognitive function, should be considered when deciding choice of antibiotics for symptomatic UTI in the elderlies.
