Increased mental health problems during the COVID-19 pandemic have become a major concern among young adults. Our aim was to understand which COVID-19-related questions predicted mental well-being during the outbreak.
Two cross-sectional datasets were used. The primary dataset was collected in May 2020 (
= 1001), during the initial COVID-19 outbreak, and the secondary in April 2019 (
= 10866), before the pandemic. Mental well-being was assessed with the Short Warwick-Edinburgh Mental Well-Being Scale. Relationships between mental well-being and COVID-19-related questions were investigated with lasso regression. As an exploratory analysis, two-way ANOVAs were used to compare mental well-being before and during the outbreak.
Higher levels of mental well-being were associated with lower levels of academic stress and COVID-19-related worry, along with a higher satisfaction with the procedures and information provided by the higher education institutions and the government. COVID-19-related symptoms and infections did not have an impact on students' mental well-being during the outbreak. Small to moderate effect sizes across the time points were detected, indicating an overall decrease in mental well-being across age and gender during the outbreak.
COVID-19 had an impact on higher education students' mental well-being. Higher education institutes may play a crucial role in protecting their students' well-being during uncertain times.After a catastrophic failure of the weld of the anchoring element of one cable in a stayed bridge, a non-destructive inspection was required to evaluate the weld condition of the 111 remaining anchoring elements to prevent future and similar failures. This examination was quite complicated since the anchoring elements are partially embedded in the reinforced concrete tower, and the weld is fully integrated into the concrete. Considering that direct access to the weld was not possible, acoustic emissions (AE) were a feasible alternative for these inspections. This study describes the inspection method, from laboratory tests simulating actual conditions for calibration to field tests for the method's tuning and evaluation. The AE inspection results are presented, and welds' condition is classified according to the acoustic energy, measured through a severity index and graded from a zonal intensity plot. Two structural elements were selected for concrete demolition to expose the weld for penetrant and ultrasonic inspections to correlate measurements of the actual condition of the welds and their defect size. Because of the analysis, welds are identified for immediate repair and the rest for AE monitoring to evaluate defect evolution through the increase of the severity index.
To evaluate the relationship between prostatic anatomical factors and pressure flow studies (PFSs).
The study was designed with 41 patients. PFS was applied to every patient. The Qmax value and voided volume during uroflowmetry were recorded. The PdetQmax values during PFS were recorded and obstruction indices were calculated. Prostate volume, prostatic indentation, prostatic urethral length, and bladder-prostatic urethral angle were determined by transrectal ultrasonography.
The mean age of the participants was 66.2 years. The mean maximum flow value was detected as 9.91 ± 4.92 ml/s, and the mean average flow value as 4.89 ± 2.54 ml/s. The mean obstruction index of the patients was found to be 75.27 ± 46.96. There was a positive linear relationship between obstruction index and PSA, prostate volume, prostatic urethral length, and prostatic indentation (

0.002, respectively). No significant relationship was found between obstruction index and bladder-prostatic urethral angle.
Prostatic urethral length and prostatic indentation are associated with the degree of bladder outlet obstruction. Further studies involving a higher number of patients are needed to calculate the accuracy of these parameters.

We characterized the gross pathology, histopathology, histochemical staining, and KIT immunoreactivity of cutaneous MCTs in a retrospective descriptive study of 11 miniature pigs (Sus scrofa domesticus). Tumors were single or multiple papules, small nodules, or plaques. In one pig, lymph nodes and internal organs were affected. Histologically, all MCTs involved the dermis, and some extended to the subcutis (4 of 11) and skeletal muscle (1 of 11). Most tumors were well-demarcated, unencapsulated, nodular or multinodular masses (8 of 11) and fewer were poorly demarcated plaques (3 of 11). Neoplastic cells were often well-differentiated with pale amphophilic-to-eosinophilic faintly granular cytoplasm, occasional binucleation, rare multinucleation, and a low mitotic count ( less then 7 per 10 hpf; 10 of 11). Eosinophils were present in tumors in all cases. Cytoplasmic granules stained most consistently with high-pH (2.5-3) toluidine blue (9 of 10) compared to low-pH (0.5-1) toluidine blue (6 of 9) or Giemsa (7 of 10). KIT immunoreactivity patterns were strong perimembranous (4 of 8), focal perinuclear and stippled cytoplasmic (1 of 8), and diffuse cytoplasmic (3 of 8), and included 1 case that was negative for histochemical stains; hence, KIT is a promising diagnostic marker for MCTs in miniature pigs.
Pump-controlled retrograde trial off (PCRTO) has been recently proposed as an effective and safe VA-ECMO weaning method. Between March 2019 and May 2021, 20 adult VA-ECMO patients who underwent PCRTO in combination with PAFC were enrolled in this study. The patients' general characteristics, PCRTO results, haemodynamic parameters during PCRTO progression, complications, and clinical prognoses were analysed. Those who survived for 48h after withdrawal and did not require ECMO assistance were defined as the success group, and those who did not survive for 48h after withdrawal or who required ECMO assistance were defined as the failure group.

In the airways, SCCs sense bacteria, allergens, viruses, and noxious stimuli and drive evasive behavior, neuroinflammation, and antibacterial responses. In the gut, tuft cells detect helminth infection and bacterial dysbiosis and initiate type II immune responses characterized by tissue remodeling. In the gingiva, SCCs detect oral pathogenic bacteria, evoke innate immune responses and release antimicrobial compounds in the epithelium, and regulate the microbiome composition. This review summarizes the most recent research on extragustatory taste receptors and their function in antibacterial defense. We also discuss how these findings have provided insights into the development of potential therapeutic strategies for mucosal bacterial infection and dental diseases.This article focuses on two projects - one at a large chemical company and the other at a small start-up - to intervene in the relations between cows and ruminal microbes to reduce bovine methane emissions. It describes these interventions as 'symbiotic engineering' a biopolitical technique targeting holobionts and becoming effective by working on interlaced sets of living things. Based on the analysis of these cases, the article elucidates a planetary symbiopolitics (Helmreich) that connects 'molecular biopolitics' (Rose) and 'microbiopolitics' (Paxson) to 'bovine biopolitics' (Lorimer, Driessen) and the politics of climate change. We critically investigate the spatial imaginaries of symbiotic engineering practices that single out the microbial realm as an Archimedean point to address planetary problems. This technoscientific vision resonates with the notion of the 'symbiotic planet' advanced by Lynn Margulis that depicts the Earth System, or Gaia, as a vast set of relations among living things down to the tiniest microbes. Margulis' concept, as well as the 'symbiotic view of life' (Gilbert, Scott, Sapp) has been embraced in recent debates in STS as a way to think of multispecies worldings. The article contributes critically to these debates by showing what happens when the topology of the symbiotic Earth becomes the operating space for symbiotic engineering practices.
One in ten children have a parent diagnosed with a mental illness by specialised psychiatric services. Severe parental mental illness is a well-established risk factor for children's mental health problems, making the identification and support of these children a public health concern. This study investigated the mental health and family context of children of parents diagnosed with depression, anxiety, or bipolar disorder in this clinical setting.
Parental reports on 87 children aged 8-17 years were analysed. The children's mental health was compared with that of a Swedish population-based sample. Multiple linear regression was used to investigate associations between child mental health and child gender, child age, parent symptoms and social status, family functioning, and perceived parental control. Furthermore, a cumulative risk index explored the effect of multiple risk factors on child mental health.
The children reportedly had significantly more mental health problems than did the population-based sample and about one-third had scores above the clinical cut-off. A significant multiple linear regression explained 49% of the variance in child mental health, with lower perceived parental control and younger child age being associated with more child mental health problems. With more reported risk factors, children reportedly had more mental health problems.
The results underline the importance of identifying a patient's children and assessing multiple relevant risk factors in the child's life. Furthermore, the results indicate that the needs of younger children and of patients in their parenting role are important to address.
To compare the disease course, histopathological features and survival rates of prostate cancer (PCa) between patients aged ⩽ 55 and > 55 year old.
In this retrospective study, we enrolled 644 patients with organ-confide prostate cancer who had undergone radical prostatectomy from 2005 to 2018. Seventy-six (11.8%) patients were under 55 years of age (group 1) and 568 (88.2%) patients were >55 years old (group 2).
Pre-operative hypertension was detected in 4 (5.3%) patients of group 1 and 80 (14.1%) patients of groups 2 (
= 0.029). The mean (±SD) prostate volume was higher in group 2 compared with group 1 (34.1(±8.4) ml vs 54.1(±9.9) ml,
< 0.001). Positive surgery margin was observed in 15 (19.7%) and 58 (10.2%) patients in group 1 and 2, respectively (
