What Are the Different Types of Codes and How Do They Work?

Contrary to older keys car keys have specific chips that are specific to each vehicle. This helps to prevent thieves from simply using the key to start the car.

Transponder Codes

Like its name suggests, a transponder sends out an encoded signal containing a four-digit number code when it is questioned by air traffic control. This signal is called the SQUAWK code and is the basis of identification of aircraft on radar screens. It can also be used to relay an exact message to the air traffic control system in the event of an emergency or to notify controllers to changes in weather conditions. Squawk codes are commonly used to communicate with ATC in situations where the pilot is unable to communicate via radio. They are essential for safe flying.
