Introduction Acute pelvic pain is an important cause of morbi-mortality. The purpose of this study was to describe the epidemiological, clinical and therapeutic features of acute pelvic pain in Yaoundé. Methods We conducted a cross-sectional, descriptive study with collection of prospective data in the Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics at the Yaoundé Gynaecology-Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital over the period 1st April-31st July 2015. We included all female subjects admitted for pelvic pain whose course was less than one month and who agreed to participate in the study. All women who were in the third trimester of pregnancy or in the post-partum period were excluded. Epi info software, version 3.5.4 was used to analyze data. Data were shown as frequency and percentage. Results During the study period, a total of 5915 women presented to the Yaoundé Gynaecology-Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital, of whom 125 (2.11%) had acute pelvic pain. The average age of patients was 29.5 ± 6.9 years. Pain was caused by upper genital tract infections (36.8%) and ectopic pregnancy (18.4%). Most patients received medical treatment (92.8%), associated with antibiotics in 65.5% of cases, anti-inflammatory drugs in 56.9% of cases and analgesics in 39.7% of cases. Surgery was performed in 25 (20%) patients via laparotomy (80%) and coelioscopy (20%). Surgery was indicated in patients with ectopic pregnancy (76% of cases). Regression of pain was obtained in 99% of cases. Conclusion Acute pelvic pain mainly affected young women with upper genital tract infections and ectopic pregnancy. In the case of ectopic pregnancy surgical treatment via laparotomy was the gold standard treatment. © Pierre-Marie Tebeu et al.Introduction Malnutrition is a major risk factor of cardiovascular and metabolic diseases and therefore the importance of good dietary practices and balanced diet cannot be overemphasized. University students tend to have poor eating practices which is related to nutritional status. The objective of our study was to assess the dietary practices of medical students, determine the prevalence of malnutrition among medical students and factors associated with malnutrition. Methods We carried out a cross-sectional study from December 2013 to March 2014 involving 203 consenting students in the Faculty of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences of the University of Yaoundé I, Faculties of Health Sciences of the Universities of Bamenda and Buea. A three-part questionnaire (socio-demographic profile, eating practices, and anthropometric parameters). Data was analysed using SPSS 18.0. Frequencies and percentages were determined for categorical variables. Means and standard deviations (mean ± SD) were calculated for continuousakes were found to be poor eating practices frequent among these students. Our findings therefore suggest the need for coordinated efforts to promote healthy eating habits among medical students in general and female medical students in particular (and by extension youths in general) as a means of curbing malnutrition among youths. © Fala Bede et al.Cerebral thrombophlebitis is a rare but severe disease whose underestimated frequency is increasingly recognized among children and, unlike adults, management is controversial. We report the case of a 12-year old child bitten by a friend at the level of the scalp, in the frontotemporal region of the head. This bite evolved due to the occurrence of a swelling evoking a frontotemporoparietal cellulitis complicated by cerebral thrombophlebitis, diagnosed based on the clinical feature and imaging. The patient was admitted in our hospital in a state of conscience disorder. Anticoagulant and etiological treatments enabled good clinical evolution. © Soufiane Badsi et al.Introduction The alloimmunization of the ABO blood group system is involved in neonatal jaundice with a considerable overall prevalence. The role of ABO incompatibility is relatively little known. The purpose of this study was to investigate neonatal jaundice due to feto-maternal ABO incompatibilities and to determine the link between the hemolysins value in the mother and the degree of jaundice observed in the infant. Methods We conducted a cross-sectional study from June to November 2015. The study population was exclusively composed of moms who were blood type O with children who were a different blood type hospitalized in the Department of Neonatology at the Reference Hospital in the city of Yaoundé. Statistical analyses were performed using the GraphPadPrism 6 software with a confidence interval of 95%. Results Hemolysins frequency was of 20.58% (7/34) and anti-A hemolysin was the most common type (85.7%; 6/7). The new-born who had blood type B had a greater concentration of bilirubin levels compared to those of the AB group (p = 0.01). Multiparity was not associated with the presence of hemolysin (p = 0.8) as well as blood type of the infant was not associated with the occurrence of the hemolysins in the mother (p = 0.5). selleck inhibitor Conclusion Early neonatal jaundice or protracted neonatal jaundice are also caused by hemolysins anti-A and anti-B derived from the allo-ABO immunization. A study on a larger sample is recommended for better assessment. © David Sock Sock et al.Introduction Antibiotic misuse is the paramount factor for antibiotic resistance. Tamale Teaching Hospital (TTH), located in Ghana's Northern Region, is the biggest tertiary hospital in the Northern half of the country and consequently one of the biggest prescribers of antibiotics. Understanding the use of antibiotics in the TTH and providing information that could be inferred to develop strategies for antibiotic prescription is of extreme importance in this era of multiple and pan-resistant strains of pathogenic microorganisms. Methods A cross-sectional study on the use of antibiotics at TTH in the Northern region of Ghana was performed. Data were collected by reviewing 10% of patients' files from January to June 2015 and then assessed for its appropriateness against the criteria based on the British National Formulary (BNF) 2015 and BNF children 2013-2014. Results were expressed in frequencies and percentages. Results A total of 617 patients' records were included in this study. Up to 385 cases of different antibiotic misuse were found, comprising of 335 errors in prescriptions and 50 non-completed treatments.
