ZnO-NPs are cytotoxic to human immune system, and they may cause both long-term and short-term negative effects.Female sex workers (FSWs) represent a high vulnerability group for the acquisition of sexual and parenteral infections such as hepatitis B virus (HBV) and hepatitis C virus (HCV) infections. The present study aimed to determine the prevalence of serological markers and risk factors associated with exposure to HBV and HCV among FSWs in the state of Pará, Brazil. A cross-sectional study using principles of the time location sampling (TLS) method was conducted in four cities (Belém, Bragança, Barcarena, and Augusto Corrêa) of the state of Pará, from 2005 to 2006. In total, 365 FSWs were interviewed using a standardized questionnaire. Blood samples were collected and tested for serological markers of exposure to HBV and HCV using an enzyme immunoassay. The overall prevalence of exposure to HBV and HCV was 36.7% and 7.7%, respectively. The prevalence of surface antigen of HBV was 3.0%. CADD522 The prevalence of anti-HBc and anti-HBc+ anti-HBs antibodies were 6.3% and 27.4%. Very few (4.7%) FSWs had vaccine immunity against HBV (anti-HBs antibodies only). The prevalence of anti-HCV antibodies was 7.7%. Low monthly income, drug usage, and unprotected sex were some of the social characteristics associated with exposure to the viruses using different analysis. The seroprevalence of HBV and HCV infections among FSWs in four cities of the state of Pará is high when compared to the general population of Brazil, but similar to those found in FSWs in other nondeveloped countries. The prevalence of HBV was higher in Belém, while the prevalence of HCV was higher in the other three cities, highlighting the importance of establishing control and prevention programs to reduce the risk of acquiring these viruses in Pará.While attention has been given to understanding support for the far-right, there is a lack of focus on the way in which a threat of the far-right can be used for political ends. This paper addresses this using the UK Brexit debate as an illustration. The question therefore is What is talk about the far-right used to do in discussions about Brexit? A discursive psychological approach addresses a sample of newspaper reports containing both 'Far-Right' and 'Brexit', from the first quarter of 2019 (n = 45). The analysis identifies a range of uses of talk about the far-right (1) An opponent of Brexit is called a Nazi by pro-Brexit protesters, who are labelled far-right; (2) A lack of Brexit is presented as fuel for the far-right; (3) Remain supporters reject the idea that a lack of Brexit fuels the far-right; (4) A link with the far-right is rejected by a prominent Brexit supporter; and (5) Support for Brexit is again linked with the far-right. The far-right can be used as a strategic tool by opposing sides of the Brexit debate and - significantly - the supposed threat of the far-right can be used to placate far-right ideas, rather than to genuinely challenge them.

Radiomics refers to the extraction of a large number of image biomarker describing the tumor phenotype displayed in a medical image. Extracted from positron emission tomography (PET) images, radiomics showed diagnostic and prognostic value for several cancer types. However, a large number of radiomic features are nonreproducible or highly correlated with conventional PET metrics. Moreover, radiomic features used in the clinic should yield relevant information about tumor texture. In this study, we propose a framework to identify technical and clinical meaningful features and exemplify our results using a PET non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) dataset.

The proposed selection procedure consists of several steps. A priori, we only include features that were found to be reproducible in a multicenter setting. Next, we apply a voxel randomization step to identify features that reflect actual textural information, that is, that yield in 90% of the patient scans a value significantly different from random texturebination of volume and one of the selected features for prediction yields promise to increase accuracy and reliability of a radiomic model.

When performing radiomic analysis for smaller lesions, it should be first carefully investigated if a textural feature reflects actual heterogeneity information. Next, verification of the absence of correlation with all conventional PET metrics is essential in order to assess the additional value of radiomic features. Radiomic analysis with lesions larger than 11.4 mL might give additional information to conventional metrics while at the same time reflecting actual tumor texture. Using a combination of volume and one of the selected features for prediction yields promise to increase accuracy and reliability of a radiomic model.Hitchhikers (phoretic organisms) identify their vehicles using species-specific visual, chemical and vibrational cues. However, what factors influence their choice between vehicles of the same species has rarely been investigated. Hitchhikers must not only avoid overcrowded vehicles but may also need to travel with conspecifics to ensure mates at their destination. Hence, a trade-off between overcrowding and presence of conspecifics likely determines the choice of a vehicle especially when destination sites are distant, ephemeral and unique. Here, we investigate whether a trade-off between the presence of conspecifics versus overcrowding by conspecifics or heterospecifics on a vehicle affects hitchhiker choice. We also investigate the sensory modality responsible for this choice. We experimentally examine these questions using a phoretic nematode community (containing plant- and animal-parasitic taxa) obligately associated with a brood-site pollination mutualism. In this model system, nematodes co-travel witharasitic nematodes did not respond to heterospecific crowding on vehicles and did not discriminate between vehicles with different heterospecific nematode densities. The reason for this lack of response to heterospecific presence is unknown. This study not only shows that phoretic organisms use different strategies while choosing a vehicle but also confirms that density-dependent effects can ensure the stability and persistence of phoretic interactions in a mutualism by balancing overcrowding against reproductive assurance.

This paper studies the abilities of a twin-robotic X-ray slot-scanning system for orthopedic imaging to reduce dose by scatter rejection compared to conventional digital radiography.

We investigate the dose saving capabilities, especially in terms of the signal- and the contrast-to-noise ratio, as well as the scatter-to-primary ratio of the proposed slot-scanning method in comparison to the state-of-the-art method for length-extended imaging. As a baseline, we use X-ray parameters of two clinically established acquisition protocols that provide the same detector entrance dose but are profoundly different in patient dose. To obtain an estimate of the photon-related noise directly from an X-ray image, we implement a Poisson-Gaussian noise model. This model is used to compare the dose efficiency of two settings and combined with the well-known K

to determine the transmission parameters. We present a method with an associated measurement protocol, utilizing the robotic capabilities of the used system to aut acquisition protocols with a grid, dose savings up to 53% are possible due to the scatter rejection without compromising the SNR. Hence, the use of the slot-scanning method is indicated, especially when it comes to regularly carried-out follow-up acquisitions, for example, in the case of scoliosis monitoring.

Convalescent plasma is used as a treatment for COVID-19. Only limited data describe the efforts to recruit COVID-19 convalescent plasma (CCP) donors. We describe our experience engaging persons recovered from COVID-19 to donate CCP.

We performed a retrospective analysis of the CCP recruitment for an 11-hospital health system in Houston, Texas. We sought CCP donations from a) "volunteers" responding to advertisements in social media, press releases, and websites and b) "referred" individuals directed to the program or identified from hospitalization records. We determined the proportions of donor candidates who passed initial telephone health screening, who qualified after diagnostic testing, who presented to the regional CCP donation center, and who completed CCP donation.

There were 900 CCP donor candidates, including 363 volunteers and 537 referred donors. Of 360 contacted volunteers, 186 (5.7%) were excluded by interview; 133 were referred for additional diagnostic screening, 97 completed donor antibody and antigen testing, and 87 were qualified for CCP donation, resulting in 35 CCP donations (9.7% of initial telephone contacts). Among 533 referred donors, 448 (84.1%) were excluded by interview, 71 were referred for additional screening, 48 completed donor antibody and antigen testing, and 40 were qualified for CCP donation, resulting in one CCP donation (0.2% of initial telephone contacts).

In this community, screening of a high number of candidates yielded a limited number of CCP donations. These observations have important implications for CCP donor recruitment and community pandemic planning.

These observations have important implications for CCP donor recruitment and community pandemic planning.Ethynodiol diacetate (EDA) and ethinyl estradiol (EE) tablets are indicated to prevent pregnancy in women who use oral contraceptives as a contraception method. EDA and EE were separated by reversed-phase HPLC using Agilent ZORBAX SB-Phenyl column, 4.6 mm × 15 cm, 5 μm, using a gradient mixture of acetonitrile and Milli-Q water as mobile phase. The linearity and recovery were found in the range of 0.025-0.25 mg/mL and 0.05-0.18 mg/mL for EDA and 0.001-0.01 mg/mL and 0.002-0.007 mg/mL for EE, respectively. The method is validated according to the regulatory guidelines concerning system suitability, specificity, repeatability, recovery, linearity, robustness, and stability of the sample solution.

O-negative donors are a critical resource for blood collection agencies, and their recruitment and retention provides an ongoing challenge. Motivational interviewing shows promise as a tool to promote donor retention, although concerns about scalability remain. The current study examined the effect of an automated Web-based interview drawing on motivational interviewing and self-determination theory on O-negative donors' motivation, intention, and behavior.

Within 13 days of donating, 2820 O-negative donors completed baseline measures of motivation and intention before being randomly assigned to complete either a motivational interview (MI) or active control interview (ACI). Motivation and intention were assessed at 2 days and at 7 weeks after participation in the MI or ACI, with return behavior tracked for 6 months following trial completion.

Changes in donor motivation and intention, rate, and time to return did not vary by participation in the MI or ACI. When compared with O-negative donors who experienced business-as-usual practices, donors completing the MI or ACI returned to donate more, and they returned more quickly.
