The solution pH and hydrazine/Cu2+ ratio strongly affected the reduction efficiency of Cu2+ ions. When 0.1 M of SDS was used, spherical 50-100 nm Cu0 NPs were obtained. The results demonstrate that Cu2+-spiked wastewater can be converted into Cu0 NPs as a value-added product via adsorption followed by chemical reduction. This work describes a novel, one-shot strategy to fabricate ultrasensitive SERS sensors based on silver/poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) nanocomposites. Upon spin coating of a dispersion of PMMA and silver precursor on N-doped silicon substrate, closely separated silver nanoparticles were self-assembled into uniform nanospheres. As a result, a thin hydrophobic PMMA layer embedded with Ag nanoparticles (AgNPs) was obtained on the whole silicon substrate. Consequently, a large-scale, reproducible SERS platform was produced through a rapid, simple, low-cost, and high-throughput technology. In addition, reproducible SERS features and high SERS enhancement factors were determined (SEF ~1015). This finding matches the highest SEF reported in literature to date (1014) for silver aggregates. The potential and novelty of this synthesis is that no reducing agent or copolymer was used, nor was any preliminary functionalization of the surface carried out. click here In addition, the AgNPs were fabricated directly on the substrate's surface; consequently, there was no need for polymer etching. Then, the synthetic method was successfully applied to prepare opaque SERS platforms. Opaque surfaces are needed in photonic devices because of the absence of secondary back reflection, which makes optical analysis and applications easier.Scalable synthetic strategies for high-quality and reproducible thermoelectric (TE) materials is an essential step for advancing the TE technology. We present here very rapid and effective methods for the synthesis of nanostructured bismuth telluride materials with promising TE performance. The methodology is based on an effective volume heating using microwaves, leading to highly crystalline nanostructured powders, in a reaction duration of two minutes. As the solvents, we demonstrate that water with a high dielectric constant is as good a solvent as ethylene glycol (EG) for the synthetic process, providing a greener reaction media. Crystal structure, crystallinity, morphology, microstructure and surface chemistry of these materials were evaluated using XRD, SEM/TEM, XPS and zeta potential characterization techniques. Nanostructured particles with hexagonal platelet morphology were observed in both systems. Surfaces show various degrees of oxidation, and signatures of the precursors used. Thermoelectric transport properties were evaluated using electrical conductivity, Seebeck coefficient and thermal conductivity measurements to estimate the TE figure-of-merit, ZT. Low thermal conductivity values were obtained, mainly due to the increased density of boundaries via materials nanostructuring. The estimated ZT values of 0.8-0.9 was reached in the 300-375 K temperature range for the hydrothermally synthesized sample, while 0.9-1 was reached in the 425-525 K temperature range for the polyol (EG) sample. Considering the energy and time efficiency of the synthetic processes developed in this work, these are rather promising ZT values paving the way for a wider impact of these strategic materials with a minimum environmental impact. The study of laser-fabricated periodic nanostructures is one of the leading topics of today's photonics research [...].Wearable sensors for non-invasive monitoring constitute a growing technology in many industrial fields, such as clinical or sport monitoring. However, one of the main challenges in wearable sensing is the development of bioelectrodes via the use of flexible and stretchable materials capable of maintaining conductive and biocompatible properties simultaneously. In this study, chitosan-carbon black (CH-CB) membranes have been synthesized using a straightforward and versatile strategy and characterized in terms of their composition and their electrical and mechanical properties. In this sense, CH-CB membranes showed good conductivity and mechanical resistance thanks to the presence of carbon black, which decreases the insulating behavior of chitosan, while flexibility and biocompatibility are maintained due to the dual composition of the membrane. Thus, flexible and biocompatible conductive bioelectrodes have been developed by the combined use of CH and CB without the use of toxic reagents, extra energy input, or long reaction times. The membranes were modified using the enzymes Glucose Oxidase and Laccase in order to develop flexible and biocompatible bioelectrodes for enzymatic glucose biofuel cells (BFCs) and glucose detection. A BFC assembled using the flexible bioelectrodes developed was able to deliver 15 µW cm-2, using just 1 mM glucose as biofuel, and up to 21.3 µW·cm-2 with higher glucose concentration. Additionally, the suitability of the CH-CB membranes to be used as a glucose sensor in a linear range from 100 to 600 µM with a limit of detection (LOD) of 76 µM has been proven. Such demonstrations for energy harvesting and sensing capabilities of the developed membrane pave the way for their use in wearable sensing and energy harvesting technologies in the clinical field due to their good mechanical, electrical, and biocompatible properties. This work focused on the application of the effective medium theory to describe the extinction coefficient (Qext) in molybdenum trioxide (MoO3) doped with different kinds of plasmonic nanoparticles, such as silver (Ag), gold (Au), and copper (Cu). Usually, in studies of these materials, it is normal to analyze the transmission or absorption spectra. However, the effect of this type or size of nanoparticles on the spectra is not as remarkable as the effect that is found by analyzing the Qext of MoO3. It was shown that the β-phase of MoO3 enhanced the intensity response of the Qext when compared to the α-phase of MoO3. With a nanoparticle size of 5 nm, the Ag-doped MoO3 was the configuration that presents the best response in Qext. On the other hand, Cu nanoparticles with a radius of 20 nm embedded in MoO3 was the configuration that presented intensities in Qext similar to the cases of Au and Ag nanoparticles. Therefore, implementing the effective medium theory can serve as a guide for experimental researchers for the application of these materials as an absorbing layer in photovoltaic cells. In this work we analyze the effectiveness of decoration of nanocrystalline SnO2/TiO2 composites with gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) and platinum nanoparticles (Pt NPs) in enhancing gas sensor properties in low-temperature HCHO detection. Nanocrystalline SnO2/TiO2 composites were synthesized by a chemical precipitation method with following modification with Pt and Au NPs by the impregnation method. The nanocomposites were characterized by TEM, XRD, Raman and FTIR spectroscopy, DRIFTS, XPS, TPR-H2 methods. In HCHO detection, the modification of SnO2 with TiO2 leads to a shift in the optimal temperature from 150 to 100 °C. Further modification of SnO2/TiO2 nanocomposites with Au NPs increases the sensor signal at T = 100 °C, while modification with Pt NPs gives rise to the appearance of sensor responses at T = 25 °C and 50 °C. At 200 °C nanocomposites exhibited high selectivity toward formaldehyde within the sub-ppm concentration range among different VOCs. The influence of Pt and Au NPs on surface reactivity of SnO2/TiO2 composite and enhancement of the sensor response toward HCHO was studied by DRIFT spectroscopy and explained by the chemical and electronic sensitization mechanisms. The interactions between cells and nanomaterials at the nanoscale play a pivotal role in controlling cellular behavior and ample evidence links cell intercommunication to nanomaterial size. However, little is known about the effect of nanomaterial geometry on cell behavior. To elucidate this and to extend the application in cancer theranostics, we have engineered core-shell cobalt-gold nanoparticles with spherical (Co@Au NPs) and elliptical morphology (Co@Au NEs). Our results show that owing to superparamagnetism, Co@Au NPs can generate hyperthermia upon magnetic field stimulation. In contrast, due to the geometric difference, Co@Au NEs can be optically excited to generate hyperthermia upon photostimulation and elevate the medium temperature to 45 °C. Both nanomaterial geometries can be employed as prospective contrast agents; however, at identical concentration, Co@Au NPs exhibited 4-fold higher cytotoxicity to L929 fibroblasts as compared to Co@Au NEs, confirming the effect of nanomaterial geometry on cell fate. Furthermore, photostimulation-generated hyperthermia prompted detachment of anti-cancer drug, Methotrexate (MTX), from Co@Au NEs-MTX complex and which triggered 90% decrease in SW620 colon carcinoma cell viability, confirming their application in cancer theranostics. The geometry-based perturbation of cell fate can have a profound impact on our understanding of interactions at nano-bio interface which can be exploited for engineering materials with optimized geometries for superior theranostic applications.Recently, indium oxide (In2O3) thin films have emerged as a promising electron transport layer (ETL) for perovskite solar cells; however, solution-processed In2O3 ETL suffered from poor morphology, pinholes, and required annealing at high temperatures. This research aims to carry out and prepare pinhole-free, transparent, and highly conductive In2O3 thin films via atomic layer deposition (ALD) seizing efficiently as an ETL. In order to explore the growth-temperature-dependent properties of In2O3 thin film, it was fabricated by ALD using the triethyl indium (Et3In) precursor. The detail of the ALD process at 115-250 °C was studied through the film growth rate, crystal structure, morphology, composition, and optical and electrical properties. The film growth rate increased from 0.009 nm/cycle to 0.088 nm/cycle as the growth temperature rose from 115 °C to 250 °C. The film thickness was highly uniform, and the surface roughness was below 1.6 nm. Our results confirmed that film's structural, optical and electrical properties directly depend on film growth temperature. Film grown at ≥200 °C exhibited a polycrystalline cubic structure with almost negligible carbon impurities. Finally, the device ALD-In2O3 film deposited at 250 °C exhibited a power conversion efficiency of 10.97% superior to other conditions and general SnO2 ETL.Graphene-based nanocomposites such as graphene oxide (GO) and nanoparticle-decorated graphene with demonstrated excellent physicochemical properties have worthwhile applications in biomedicine and bioengineering such as tissue engineering. In this study, we fabricated gold nanoparticle-decorated GO (GO-Au) nanocomposites and characterized their physicochemical properties using UV-Vis absorption spectra, FTIR spectra, contact angle analyses, and free radical scavenging potential. Moreover, we investigated the potent applications of GO-Au nanocomposites on directing mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) for tissue regeneration. We compared the efficacy of as-prepared GO-derived nanocomposites including GO, GO-Au, and GO-Au (×2) on the biocompatibility of MSCs, immune cell identification, anti-inflammatory effects, differentiation capacity, as well as animal immune compatibility. Our results showed that Au-deposited GO nanocomposites, especially GO-Au (×2), significantly exhibited increased cell viability of MSCs, had good anti-oxidative ability, sponged the immune response toward monocyte-macrophage transition, as well as inhibited the activity of platelets.
