This study demonstrates the development of a nitric oxide (NO)-releasing hydrogel wound dressing and its efficacy at accelerating methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA)-infected wound healing. A DETA/NONOate-doped alginate (Alg-DETA/NO) hydrogel was synthesized using alginate as a hydrogel-forming wound dressing material and diethylenetriamine/diazeniumdiolate (DETA/NONOate) as an NO donor. Alg-DETA/NO exhibited a prolonged NO release profile over a period of 4 days. The rheological properties of Alg-DETA/NO did not differ significantly from those of pure alginate. Importantly, Alg-DETA/NO showed potent antibacterial activity against MRSA, with minimal toxicity to mouse fibroblasts. The application of Alg-DETA/NO to MRSA-infected wounds in a mouse model showed a favorable wound healing with accelerated wound-size reduction and reduced skin bacterial infection. Additionally, histological examination revealed that Alg-DETA/NO reduced inflammation at the wound site and promoted re-epithelialization, angiogenesis, and collagen deposition. Thus, Alg-DETA/NO presented herein could serve as a safe and potent hydrogel dressing for the treatment of MRSA-infected wounds.Cellulose, as the most abundant natural polysaccharide, is an excellent material for developing green humidity sensors, especially due to its humidity responsiveness as a result of its rich hydrophilic groups. In combination with other components including carbon materials and polymers, cellulose and its derivatives can be used to design high-performance humidity sensors that meet various application requirements. This review summarizes the recent advances in the field of various cellulose-derived humidity sensors, with particular attention paid to different sensing mechanisms including resistance, capacitance, colorimetry and gravity, and so on. Furthermore, the roles of cellulose and its derivatives are highlighted. This work may promote the development of cellulose-derived humidity sensors, as well as other cellulose-based intelligent materials. To achieve the co-delivery of chemotherapeutic drugs, genes, and immune agents in a single nanoparticulate system, p-mercaptobenzoic acid-grafted N, N, N-trimethyl chitosan nanoparticles (MT NPs) were successfully synthesized. Paclitaxel (PTX) was encapsulated into the hydrophobic core of the MT NPs, and meanwhile, survivin shRNA-expressing plasmid (iSur-pDNA) and recombinant human interleukin-2 (rhIL-2) were loaded onto the hydrophilic shell of the MT NPs. Owing to the redox-sensitiveness of MT NPs, a rapid release of PTX was triggered by the high concentration of glutathione. The synergistic effects of PTX (1.5 mg/kg), iSur-pDNA (1.875 mg/kg), and rhIL-2 (6 × 105 IU/kg) at a low dose endowed the MT/PTX/pDNA/rhIL-2 NPs with enhanced antitumor efficacies and improved tumor-induced immunosuppression. Selleckchem MLN7243 These results demonstrated that the co-delivery of PTX, iSur-pDNA, and rhIL-2 by the amphiphilic chitosan based NPs with redox-sensitiveness could be a promising strategy in the treatment of tumors. The elucidation of the oral absorption of natural polysaccharides contributes to their further research and utilization. Herein, to explore the absorption of a pectin-type polysaccharide from Smilax china L. (SCLP), SCLP was respectively fluorescently labeled with fluorescein-5-thioicarbazide (FSCLP) and Cyanine7 amine (Cy7-SCLP) for in vitro and in vivo tracking. The near-infrared imaging demonstrated that Cy7-SCLP was absorbable in the small intestine and distributed in the liver and kidney after oral administration. Subsequently, in vitro intestinal epithelial tissue experiments showed that the jejunum was the dominant site of FSCLP transport. Further transport studies in the Caco-2 cell monolayer illustrated that FSCLP was delivered across the monolayer via transcellular transport by caveolae-mediated endocytosis and macropinocytosis together with paracellular transport by reversibly affecting tight junctions. In summary, this work presents the oral absorption characteristics and mechanisms of SCLP through the intestinal epithelium, which will facilitate the further development of SCLP and pectin polysaccharides. The treatment of osteochondral (OC) defects remains challenging because of the lack of economical and feasible therapeutic strategies for OC repair and reconstruction. In this study, we report an integrated bilayer hydrogel with robust interface binding force (40 kPa) by facilitating the diffusion of calcium ions to the secondary crosslink of the bilayer hydrogel, in which gellan gum and sodium alginate acted as the chondral layer, gellan gum and hydroxyapatite acted as subchondral layer. This integrated construct has high cytocompatibility, and can seed with mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) related to different functional protein expression for cartilage and bone formation, respectively. Furthermore, in the rabbit critical-sized osteochondral defect model (4.0 mm in diameter and 8.0 mm in depth), the calcium enriched hydrogel act as a calcium reservoir, promote neovascularization at week 4, and repair the critical defect at week 8, demonstrating the feasible preparation of an acellular hydrogel for OC repair.Plastic pollution has inspired the preparation of environmentally friendly bio-based plastics that can replace petroleum-based plastics. Herein, a composite film with oxygen and water resistant properties was prepared by a fluidized bed method, employing bio-based cellulose acetate (CA) as raw material, glycerol as a plasticizer, and chitosan and silica as additives. The addition of 15% chitosan greatly reduced the oxygen transmission rate of the CA film by 83.5%, and increased the tensile stress and tensile strain of the composite membrane, reaching 26.5 MPa and 22.2%, respectively. The deposition of silica particles is able to compensate for the undesired increase in the hydrophilicity caused by the addition of chitosan, and tune the hydrophilic nature of the surface of the CA/CS films to the hydrophobic nature, which is desirable for water-resistant applications. The prepared composite film displays good oxygen and water resistant properties and can be used for food packaging and related applications. The effects of gelatinization degree (GD) and octenyl succinic anhydride (OSA) esterification in the sorption-desorption characteristics of normal corn starch (NCS) were studied. NCS was subjected to different GD (53, 70, and 96%) with an extruder and lyophilized. FTIR analysis revealed that GD increased the hydrated (995/1022 ratio) and decreased the short-range ordered (1022/1047 ratio). The equilibrium sorption-desorption curve of starches was obtained for water activities up to 0.95 and fitted with the Guggenheim-Anderson-de Boer (GAB) model. Gelatinization of corn starch decreased its water sorption capacity, increased its sorption hysteresis and decreased its monolayer moisture content. OSA treatment of NCS reduced the water sorption capacity, hysteresis, and monolayer moisture content as reflected by slight variations of these parameters with the GD. A principal component analysis showed that GD and OSA esterification are mutually independent treatments, which can provide different effects on the water sorption characteristics of NCS.Several studies are described that contribute to the systematic exploration of new aspects of digestion, fermentation, and biological activities of pectic polysaccharides (PPS) leading to a better understanding of prebiotics. Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is thought to be associated with the dysbacteriosis induced by different environmental agents in genetically susceptible persons. PPS are considered as an indispensable gut-microbiota-accessible carbohydrate that play a dominant role in maintaining gut microbiota balance and show a better effect in ameliorating IBD than some traditional prebiotics. The aim of this review is to summarize the fermentation characteristics of PPS, highlight its role in improving IBD, and propose a view that PPS may be a new and effective prebiotic.Zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) hold great potential for carbon capture, while a major challenge for the practical application of ZIFs is the development of convenient three-dimensional bulk materials. Here, sustainable and biodegradable bacterial cellulose (BC) was used as the substrate for ZIF growth. Amino-functionalized ZIF-8 (ZIF-8-NH2) was prepared within BC substrate via an in situ growth approach. ZIF crystals were wrapped uniformly over cellulose fibers and the chelating effect between metal (zinc) ions and hydroxyl groups makes the composites have high interface affinity and compatibility. The resulting foams presented a high CO2 adsorption capacity of 1.63 mmol/g (25 °C, 1 bar). Moreover, ZIF-8-NH2@BC foams are facile to be regenerated by heating at 80 °C. This work provides a new avenue to construct ZIF/cellulose composites for gas treatment applications. In this study, lignin-carbohydrate complexes (LCCs) were isolated from biomass (raw and pretreated) to investigate the structural changes in biomass pretreated by Fenton oxidation and hydrothermal treatment, and their effect on enzymatic hydrolysis. The composition and structure of the LCCs fractions were investigated via carbohydrate analysis, XRD, FT-IR, and 2D HSQC NMR. The biomass degradation rate of yellow poplar and larch during Fenton oxidation and hydrothermal treatment was approximately 30%. Most of the hemicellulose was degraded during pretreatment, while xylan remained in the yellow poplar, and galactan, mannan, and xylan remained in the larch. The fractional yield of glucan-rich LCC (LCC1) in the yellow poplar (raw and pretreated biomass) was high, while that of glucomannan-rich LCC (LCC3) in larch was higher than the yield yellow poplar. Phenyl glycoside, γ-ester, and benzyl ether linkages were observed in the LCCs of yellow poplar, while phenyl glycoside and γ-ester were detected in those of larch. Following pretreatment, the frequencies of β-β', β-5, and γ-ester in the LCCs of larch were found to be higher than in those of yellow poplar. The efficiencies of enzymatic hydrolysis for the pretreated yellow poplar and larch were 93.53% and 26.23%, respectively. These finding indicated that the β-β', β-5, and γ-ester linkages included in the pretreated biomass affected the efficiency of enzymatic hydrolysis.Inulin-type fructans with different degrees of polymerization (DPs) were used as wall materials for the blue colorant produced from the crosslinking between genipin and milk proteins. The impact of using fructooligosaccharides (FOS) with DP = 5 and inulins with DP ≥ 10 (GR-In) and DP ≥ 23 (HP-In) on the physical (microstructure, size, water activity, wettability, solubility, water adsorption, glass transition temperature, and color), chemical (free genipin retention and moisture), and technological (colorant power, pH stability, and thermal stability) properties of the powdered blue colorant was examined. Inulins were more efficient carriers as seen from the physical characteristics of the microparticles. FOS and GR-In promoted higher retention of free genipin than HP-In. Additionally, their lower DP influenced the rehydration proprieties as well as the color intensity and colorant power. The DP did not affect the physical stability of the colorant at different pH conditions or at high temperature. Our findings demonstrated that the DP of the fructan exhibited a strong impact on the blue intensity of the samples and also their rehydration capacity.
