Various swelling drug delivery devices are promising materials for control drug delivery because of their ability to swell and release entrapped therapeutics, in response to physiological stimuli. Previously, many mathematical models have been developed to predict the mechanism of drug release from a swelling device. However, some of these models do not consider the changes in diffusion behaviour as the device swells. Therefore, we used a two-phase approach to simplify the mathematical model considering the effect of swelling on the diffusion coefficient. We began by defining a moving boundary problem to consider the swelling process. Landau transformation was used for mitigating the moving boundary problem. The transformed problem was analytically solved using the separation of variables method. Further, the analytical solution was extended to include the drug release in two phases where each phase has distinct diffusion coefficient and continuity condition was applied. The newly developed model was validated by the experimental data of bacterial cellulose hydrogels using the LSQCURVEFIT function in MATLAB. The numerical test showed that the new model exhibited notable improvement in curve fitting, and it was observed that the initial effective diffusion coefficient of the swelling device was lower than the later effective diffusion coefficient.Very preterm children ( less then 32 weeks gestation at birth; VP) are at risk of developmental difficulties. Specific functional difficulties and delays in visual perception, fine motor, and visual-motor skills have received little research attention, although they are critical for daily life and school readiness. Our aim was to assess these skills in a contemporary cohort of 60 VP and 60 matched term-born children before school entry. We administered the Movement Assessment Battery for Children (M-ABC-2) and the Developmental Test of Visual Perception (DTVP-2). Linear and logistic regressions were run to test group differences in performance and rates of developmental delay in visual perception, fine motor, and visual-motor skills. Very preterm children had lower scores than term-born children in visual perception (β = -0.25; p = 0.006), fine motor (β = -0.44; p less then 0.001), and visual-motor tasks (β = -0.46; p less then 0.001). The rate of developmental delay ( less then -1 SD) was higher among VP in visual perception (odds ratio (OR) = 3.4; 95% confidence interval (CI 1.1-10.6)), fine motor (OR = 6.2 (2.4-16.0)), and visual-motor skills (OR = 13.4 (4.1-43.9)) than in term-born controls. VP children are at increased risk for clinically relevant developmental delays in visual perception, fine motor, and visual-motor skills. Following up VP children until preschool age may facilitate early identification and timely intervention.Silica nanosprings (NS) were coated with gallium nitride (GaN) by high-temperature atomic layer deposition. The deposition temperature was 800 °C using trimethylgallium (TMG) as the Ga source and ammonia (NH3) as the reactive nitrogen source. The growth of GaN on silica nanosprings was compared with deposition of GaN thin films to elucidate the growth properties. The effects of buffer layers of aluminum nitride (AlN) and aluminum oxide (Al2O3) on the stoichiometry, chemical bonding, and morphology of GaN thin films were determined with X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), high-resolution x-ray diffraction (HRXRD), and atomic force microscopy (AFM). Scanning and transmission electron microscopy of coated silica nanosprings were compared with corresponding data for the GaN thin films. As grown, GaN on NS is conformal and amorphous. Upon introducing buffer layers of Al2O3 or AlN or combinations thereof, GaN is nanocrystalline with an average crystallite size of 11.5 ± 0.5 nm. The electrical properties of the GaN coated NS depends on whether or not a buffer layer is present and the choice of the buffer layer. In addition, the IV curves of GaN coated NS and the thin films (TF) with corresponding buffer layers, or lack thereof, show similar characteristic features, which supports the conclusion that atomic layer deposition (ALD) of GaN thin films with and without buffer layers translates to 1D nanostructures.The aim of this study was to evaluate the psychometric qualities of the WHOQOL-BREF(PT) (the questionnaire developed by the World Health Organization Quality of Life Grpup for quality of life assessment), when applied to Portuguese elderly people residing in a community setting. We examined the relation between FSI and their contributors from the main food groups and obesity in European adolescents. We included 843 adolescents (51.6% male) from the cross-sectional HELENA study with two completed 24 h recalls and anthropometric data. Linear mixed models were applied to investigate the relation between FSI and different anthropometric indices. Odds ratios for having a high body mass index (BMI) were also estimated by multilevel ordinal regression. Total FSI was higher in males than females (102.60 g and 87.58 g, respectively, p less then 0.001). No effect was observed between free sugar from the main food groups and BMI. Consumers of FSI from "cakes, pies and biscuits" in males (odd ratio (OR) = 0.455; 95% Confidence interval (CI) 0.251, 0.824) and from "breakfast cereals" in females had a lower probability of having obesity (OR = 0.423; 95%CI 0.204, 0.878), whereas females consuming FSI from 'fruit and vegetables juices' had a higher probability of obesity (OR= 2.733; 95% CI 1.286, 5.810). The aim of this study was to survey volatile compound emission using an e-nose device and to identify released molecules through solid phase microextraction-gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (SPME-GC/MS) analysis to ultimately develop a detection system for fungi and fungi-like organisms. To this end, cultures of eight fungi (Armillaria gallica, Armillaria ostoyae, Fusarium avenaceum, Fusarium culmorum, Fusarium oxysporum, Fusarium poae, Rhizoctonia solani, Trichoderma asperellum) and four oomycetes (Phytophthora cactorum, P. cinnamomi, P. plurivora, P. ramorum) were tested with the e-nose system and investigated by means of SPME-GC/MS. Strains of F. poae, R. solani and T. asperellum appeared to be the most odoriferous. All investigated fungal species (except R. link3 solani) produced sesquiterpenes in variable amounts, in contrast to the tested oomycetes strains. Other molecules such as aliphatic hydrocarbons, alcohols, aldehydes, esters and benzene derivatives were found in all samples. The results suggested that the major differences between respective VOC emission ranges of the tested species lie in sesquiterpene production, with fungi emitting some while oomycetes released none or smaller amounts of such molecules. Our e-nose system could discriminate between the odors emitted by P. ramorum, F. poae, T. asperellum and R. solani, which accounted for over 88% of the PCA variance. These preliminary results of fungal and oomycete detection make the e-nose device suitable for further sensor design as a potential tool for forest managers, other plant managers, as well as regulatory agencies such as quarantine services.Studies in adults showed differential neural processing between overt and inner speech. So far, it is unclear whether inner and overt speech are processed differentially in children. The present study examines the pre-activation of the speech network in order to disentangle domain-general executive control from linguistic control of inner and overt speech production in 6- to 7-year-olds by simultaneously applying electroencephalography (EEG) and functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS). Children underwent a picture-naming task in which the pure preparation of a subsequent speech production and the actual execution of speech can be differentiated. The preparation phase does not represent speech per se but it resembles the setting up of the language production network. Only the fNIRS revealed a larger activation for overt, compared to inner, speech over bilateral prefrontal to parietal regions during the preparation phase. Findings suggest that the children's brain can prepare the subsequent speech production. The preparation for overt and inner speech requires different domain-general executive control. In contrast to adults, the children´s brain did not show differences between inner and overt speech when a concrete linguistic content occurs and a concrete execution is required. This might indicate that domain-specific executive control processes are still under development.A simple general method for the synthesis of 1-acyl-2-(ortho-hydroxyaryl)cyclopropanes, which belong to the donor-acceptor cyclopropane family, has been developed. This method, based on the Corey-Chaykovsky cyclopropanation of 2-hydroxychalcones, allows for the preparation of a large diversity of hydroxy-substituted cyclopropanes, which can serve as promising building blocks for the synthesis of various bioactive compounds.Although biogenic amines (BAs) present in fermented foods exert important health-promoting and physiological function support roles, their excessive ingestion can give rise to deleterious toxicological effects. Therefore, here we have screened the BA contents and supporting food quality indices of a series of fermented food products using a multianalyte-chemometrics strategy. A liquid chromatographic triple quadrupole mass spectrometric (LC-MS/MS) technique was utilized for the simultaneous multicomponent analysis of 8 different BAs, and titratable acidity, pH, total lipid content, and thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances (TBARS) values were also determined. Rigorous univariate and multivariate (MV) chemometric data analysis strategies were employed to evaluate results acquired. Almost all foods analyzed had individual and total BA contents that were within recommended limits. The chemometrics methods applied were useful for recognizing characteristic patterns of BA analytes and food quality measures between some fermented food classes, and for assessing their inter-relationships and potential metabolic sources.
