Managed aquifer recharge (MAR) refers to a suite of methods that is increasingly being applied worldwide for sustainable groundwater management to tackle drinking or irrigation water shortage or to restore and maintain groundwater ecosystems. The potential for MAR is far from being exhausted, not only due to geological and hydrogeological conditions or technical and economic feasibility but also due to its lack of acceptance by the public and policymakers. One approach to enable the safe and accepted use of MAR could be to provide comprehensive risk management, including the identification, analysis, and evaluation of potential risks related to MAR. This article reviews current MAR risk assessment methodologies and guidelines and summarizes possible hazards and related processes. It may help planners and operators select the appropriate MAR risk assessment approaches and support the risk identification process. In addition to risk assessment (and subsequent risk treatment) related to the MAR implementation phase, this review also addresses risk assessment for MAR operation. We also highlight the limitations and lessons learned from the application and development of risk assessment methodologies. Moreover, developments are recommended in the area of MAR-related risk assessment methodologies and regulation. The aim of this work was to identify epigenetic events in which promoter or gene body DNA methylation induces gene expression changes that drive melanocyte malignant transformation and metastasis. We previously developed a linear mouse model of melanoma progression consisting of spontaneously immortalized melanocytes, premalignant melanocytes, a nonmetastatic tumorigenic, and a metastatic cell line. Here, through the integrative analysis of methylome and transcriptome data, we identified the relationship between promoter and/or gene body DNA methylation alterations and gene expression in early, intermediate, and late stages of melanoma progression. We identified adenylate cyclase type 3 (Adcy3) and inositol polyphosphate 4-phosphatase type II (Inpp4b), which affect tumor growth and metastatic potential, respectively. Importantly, the gene expression and DNA methylation profiles found in this murine model of melanoma progression were correlated with available clinical data from large population-based primary melanoma cohorts, revealing potential prognostic markers.Informed consent is an essential requirement for the ethical conduct of research. The objective of our study was to elucidate the wide variable phenotypic expressivity and incomplete penetrance in a three-generation family with a truncating variant in TBX4. In addition to exome and genome sequencing analyses, a candidate noncoding regulatory single nucleotide variant (SNV) within the lung-specific TBX4 enhancer was functionally tested using an in vitro luciferase reporter assay. A heterozygous frameshift variant c.1112dup (p.Pro372Serfs*14) in TBX4 was identified in patients with mild interstitial lung disease (1), bronchiolitis obliterans (1), recurrent pneumothorax (1), ICPPS/SPS (1), LLDD (2), and in unaffected individuals (4). Oncostatin M (OSM) is a multifunctional cytokine that belongs to the interleukin (IL)-6 subfamily with several biological activities. However, the role of recombinant adenoviruses co-expressing ING4 and OSM (Ad-ING4-OSM) in anti-tumour activity of laryngeal cancer has not yet been identified. Recombinant Ad-ING4-OSM was used to evaluate their combined effect on enhanced anti-tumour activity in Hep-2 cells of laryngeal cancer in vivo. Moreover, in vitro function assays of co-expression of Ad-ING4-OSM were performed to explore impact of co-expression of Ad-ING4-OSM on biological phenotype of laryngeal cancer cell line, that is Hep-2 cells. In vitro, Ad-ING4-OSM significantly inhibited the growth, enhanced apoptosis, altered cell cycle with G1 and G2/M phase arrest, and upregulated the expression of P21, P27, P53 and downregulated survivin in laryngeal cancer Hep-2 cells. Furthermore, in vivo functional experiments of co-expressing of Ad-ING4-OSM demonstrated that solid tumours in the nude mouse model were significantly suppressed, and the co-expressing Ad-ING4-OSM showed a significant upregulation expression of P21, P53, Bax and Caspase-3 and a downregulation of Cox-2, Bcl-2 and CD34. This study for the first time demonstrated the clinical value and the role of co-expressing Ad-ING4-OSM in biological function of laryngeal cancer. This work suggested that co-expressing Ad-ING4-OSM might serve as a potential therapeutic target for laryngeal cancer patients.By the end of the first year of life, infants' discrimination abilities tune to frequently experienced face groups. Little is known about the exploration strategies adopted to efficiently discriminate frequent, familiar face types. The present eye-tracking study examined the distribution of visual fixations produced by 10-month-old and 4-month-old singletons while learning adult (i.e., familiar) and child (i.e., unfamiliar) White faces. Infants were tested in an infant-controlled visual habituation task, in which post-habituation preference measured successful discrimination. Results confirmed earlier evidence that, without sibling experience, 10-month-olds discriminate only among adult faces. Analyses of gaze movements during habituation showed that infants' fixations were centered in the upper part of the stimuli. The mouth was sampled longer in adult faces than in child faces, while the child eyes were sampled longer and more frequently than the adult eyes. At 10 months, but not at 4 months, global measures of scanning behavior on the whole face also varied according to face age, as the spatiotemporal distribution of scan paths showed larger within- and between-participants similarity for adult faces than for child faces. Results are discussed with reference to the perceptual narrowing literature, and the influence of age-appropriate developmental tasks on infants' face processing abilities.The pattern of weight loss and regain, termed "weight cycling," is common in overweight individuals. It is unclear whether the well-established benefits of weight loss persist following weight regain or whether weight cycling is harmful. Human studies of weight cycling have conflicting results reflecting limitations of the observational designs of these studies. By controlling the macronutrient content of diets in animal studies, weight cycling can be studied in a highly controlled manner, thereby overcoming the limitations of human studies. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of animal studies which assessed the health consequences of weight cycling. Studies were classified into those which compared weight cycling to lifelong obesity and those which compared weight cycling to later onset obesity. There were no differences in health outcomes between weight cycled animals and those with lifelong obesity, highlighting that weight regain reverses health benefits achieved by weight loss. In comparison with animals with later onset obesity, weight cycled animals had higher fasting glucose levels and more impaired glucose tolerance following weight regain. Our review of animal studies suggests that health benefits of diet-induced weight loss do not persist after weight regain and weight cycling results in adverse metabolic outcomes.

The growing resistance of bacteria to antimicrobial medicines is a global issue and a direct threat to human health. Despite this, antibiotic prophylaxis is often still routinely used in dental implant surgery to prevent bacterial infection and early implant failure, despite unclear benefits. There is a lack of sufficient evidence to formulate clear clinical guidelines and therefore there is a need for well-designed, large-scale randomized controlled trials to determine the effect of antibiotic prophylaxis.

To compare the effect of a presurgical antibiotic regimen with an identical placebo regimen in healthy or relatively healthy patients receiving dental implants.

The 474 patients participating in the study were recruited from seven clinics in southern Sweden. We randomized the patients into a test and a placebo group; the study was conducted double-blinded. Preoperatively, the test group received 2g of amoxicillin and the control group, identical placebo tablets. The primary outcome was implant failure; secondary outcomes were postoperative infections and adverse events.
