Hypoxia-response mechanism in the fungus is, however, divergent from the regulation described for Ascomycota fermenting yeasts or animal-pathogenic species of Basidiomycota. © The Author(s) 2020.Background Microorganisms in biogas reactors are essential for degradation of organic matter and methane production. However, a comprehensive genome-centric comparison, including relevant metadata for each sample, is still needed to identify the globally distributed biogas community members and serve as a reliable repository. Results Here, 134 publicly available metagenomes derived from different biogas reactors were used to recover 1635 metagenome-assembled genomes (MAGs) representing different biogas bacterial and archaeal species. All genomes were estimated to be > 50% complete and nearly half ≥ 90% complete with ≤ 5% contamination. In most samples, specialized microbial communities were established, while only a few taxa were widespread among the different reactor systems. Metabolic reconstruction of the MAGs enabled the prediction of functional traits related to biomass degradation and methane production from waste biomass. An extensive evaluation of the replication index provided an estimation of the growth dynamics for microbes involved in different steps of the food chain. Conclusions The outcome of this study highlights a high flexibility of the biogas microbiome, allowing it to modify its composition and to adapt to the environmental conditions, including temperatures and a wide range of substrates. Our findings enhance our mechanistic understanding of the AD microbiome and substantially extend the existing repository of genomes. The established database represents a relevant resource for future studies related to this engineered ecosystem. © The Author(s) 2020.Background An efficient biodegradation-strengthening approach was developed to improve penicillin G degradation from industrial bacterial residue in an expanded bed adsorption bioreactor (EBAB) is reported in this paper. Results Paracoccus sp. strain KDSPL-02 was isolated based on its ability to use penicillin G as the sole carbon and nitrogen source. Strain identification was based on analyses of morphology, physio-biochemical characteristics, and 16S rDNA sequences. The effects of temperature, pH, PVA-sodium alginate concentration, calcium chloride concentration and initial penicillin G concentration were investigated. Repeated operations of immobilized cells with EBAB, At initial penicillin concentrations below 2.0 g L- 1, the continuous mode could reach more than 20 times, and the degradation rate reached 100%. Conclusions The present study suggests that the EBAB system can be utilized for the simple and economical biodegradation of penicillin G from industrial bacterial residue. selleck chemical © The Author(s). 2020.Background The effectiveness of psychotherapeutic interventions for eating disorders (EDs) is widely studied in Europe, North America, and Australia/New Zealand. However, few controlled studies and no randomized controlled trials (RCTs) have been conducted in Japan despite the relatively high prevalence of EDs in the Japanese population. The aim of this study is to evaluate the effect of enhanced cognitive behavior therapy (CBT-E), an evidence-supported ED-focused form of cognitive behavior therapy (CBT), for the treatment of bulimia nervosa (BN) in Japan. Methods/design This multicenter RCT will compare CBT-E with treatment as usual (TAU), which is widely used in Japan. A group of 140 adult outpatients with a Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders Fifth Edition (DSM-5) diagnosis of BN, ≥18 years of age, a body mass index (BMI) > 17.5 and  less then  40 kg/m2 will be randomly assigned to CBT-E or TAU. Participants will be stratified by intervention site and BN severity. CBT-E participants will to be practically feasible. In addition, demonstrating the effectiveness of CBT-E in Japan would demonstrate that it could be successfully extended to additional world cultures and regions. Registered 7 Mar 2018. © The Author(s). 2020.Background For families of typically developing children, extremes of family cohesion (enmeshed and disengaged) and flexibility (rigid and chaotic) are associated with negative outcomes (Olson, 2011). Some work suggests that this may not be true for families of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD; Altiere & von Kluge 2009). Specifically, regimented daily routines (increased rigidity) and highly involved caregivers (increased enmeshment) might theoretically be associated with positive outcomes. Objectives This study examined whether families who have a child with ASD report different family dynamics than families with typically developing children, and if these dynamics are equally predictive of outcomes for both groups. Method Regression-based interaction analyses using data from an online survey (n = 235) were used to examine how diagnostic group (typically-developing child or child with ASD) affected the relationships between elements of family functioning and parent outcomes of happiness, depression, and satisfaction with family life. Results Higher parent-reported enmeshment was associated with decreased parent-reported happiness in typical families only; these variables were unrelated in families with a child with ASD. In addition, the relationship between disengagement and parent happiness was marginally weaker in the ASD group. Other scales (rigid and chaotic) exhibited similar relationships with family outcomes across both diagnostic groups. Conclusion In alignment with previous findings (Altiere & von Kluge 2009), elevated levels of enmeshment were not predictive of poorer outcomes in families of children with ASD. There is a need to critically consider whether behaviors traditionally thought of as "enmeshed" may represent different, more adaptive support strategies for families who have a child with ASD.Background Aneuploidy, a condition caused by an imbalance between the relative dosages of chromosomes, generally produces a novel phenotype specific to the molecular karyotype. Few techniques are currently available for detecting the molecular karyotypes of aneuploids in plants. Results Based on this imbalance in chromosome dosage, a new approach (referred to as 'SSR-qPCR') combining simple sequence repeat (SSR) markers and quantitative real-time PCR (qPCR) has been developed and utilized to detect some common aneuploids irrespective of heterozygosity. We screened 17 specific SSR markers covering all loquat linkage groups and redesigned 6 pairs of primers for SSR markers that can detect loquat chromosome aneuploidies. The SSR-qPCR detection results obtained for hybrid progeny and open-pollination progeny of triploid loquat showed diagnostic accuracies of 88.9% and 62.5%, respectively, compared with the chromosome preparation results. Conclusion SSR-qPCR can detect loquat aneuploids and be used to construct the entire molecular karyotypes of aneuploid individuals. Therefore, this method offers a novel alternative for the detection of chromosome aneuploidies. © The Author(s) 2020.Background Myxospermy is a process by which the external surfaces of seeds of many plant species produce mucilage-a polysaccharide-rich gel with numerous fundamental research and industrial applications. Due to its functional properties the mucilage can be difficult to remove from the seed and established methods for mucilage extraction are often incomplete, time-consuming and unnecessarily wasteful of precious seed stocks. Results Here we tested the efficacy of several established protocols for seed mucilage extraction and then downsized and adapted the most effective elements into a rapid, small-scale extraction and analysis pipeline. Within 4 h, three chemically- and functionally-distinct mucilage fractions were obtained from myxospermous seeds. These fractions were used to study natural variation and demonstrate structure-function links, to screen for known mucilage quality markers in a field trial, and to identify research and industry-relevant lines from a large mutant population. Conclusion The use of this pipeline allows rapid analysis of mucilage characteristics from diverse myxospermous germplasm which can contribute to fundamental research into mucilage production and properties, quality testing for industrial manufacturing, and progressing breeding efforts in myxospermous crops. © The Author(s) 2020.Background In this paper, an unsupervised Bayesian learning method is proposed to perform rice panicle segmentation with optical images taken by unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) over paddy fields. Unlike existing supervised learning methods that require a large amount of labeled training data, the unsupervised learning approach detects panicle pixels in UAV images by analyzing statistical properties of pixels in an image without a training phase. Under the Bayesian framework, the distributions of pixel intensities are assumed to follow a multivariate Gaussian mixture model (GMM), with different components in the GMM corresponding to different categories, such as panicle, leaves, or background. The prevalence of each category is characterized by the weights associated with each component in the GMM. The model parameters are iteratively learned by using the Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) method with Gibbs sampling, without the need of labeled training data. Results Applying the unsupervised Bayesian learning algorithm on diverse UAV images achieves an average recall, precision and F 1 score of 96.49%, 72.31%, and 82.10%, respectively. These numbers outperform existing supervised learning approaches. Conclusions Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method can accurately identify panicle pixels in UAV images taken under diverse conditions. © The Author(s) 2020.Background Since an association has been found between diet and psychological problems, this study aimed to evaluate the relationship between dietary habits and psychological problems among Iranian adults. Methods Data on dietary habits and psychological problems among 9965 adults were provided from the recruitment phase of Yazd Health Study, a population-based cohort research on Iranian adults. The association between dietary habits and psychological problems was assessed by multiple logistic regression analysis. Results After the adjustment for confounders, fast food and fried food consumptions were associated with increased depressive [odds ratio (OR) = 1.61, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.18-2.20] and stress symptoms (OR = 2.47, 95% CI 1.46-4.18), respectively. Eating breakfast had a protective role on stress features (OR = 0.60, 95% CI 0.39-0.92), while snack intake was related to higher odds of depressive (OR = 1.36, 95% CI 1.01-1.84), anxiety (OR = 1.99, 95% CI 1.55-2.56) and stress symptoms (OR = 1.73, 95% CI 1.
