Increasing nZVI concentrations in the growing solution increased Mg and Fe uptake and reduced the Fe translocation factor. Our results indicate that nZVI has few toxic effects on the studied species. In this work, Al-Mg intermetallic powders were characterized and obtained by melting, casting into a steel chill and subsequent mechanical activation in a planetary mill. The method for producing Al12Mg17 intermetallic powder is presented. The dispersity, morphology, chemical composition, and phase composition of the obtained powder materials were investigated. Certain thermodynamic properties of high-energy materials containing the Al-Mg powder after mechanical activation of various durations were investigated. The addition of the Al-Mg powders to the high-energy composition (synthetic rubber SKDM-80 + ammonium perchlorate AP + boron B) can significantly increase the burning rate by approximately 47% and the combustion heat by approximately 23% compared with the high-energy compositions without the Al-Mg powder. The addition of the Al12Mg17 powder obtained after 6 h of mechanical activation provides an increase in the burning rate by 8% (2.5 ± 0.1 mm/s for the mechanically activated Al12Mg17 powder and 2.3 ± 0.1 mm/s for the commercially available powder) and an increase in the combustion heat by 3% (7.4 ± 0.2 MJ/kg for the mechanically activated Al-Mg powder and 7.1 ± 0.2 MJ/kg for the commercially available powder). The possibility of using the Al-Mg intermetallic powders as the main component of pyrotechnic and special compositions is shown.Leuconostoccitreum, a hetero-fermentative type of lactic acid bacteria, is a crucial probiotic candidate because of its ability to promote human health. However, inefficient gene manipulation tools limit its utilization in bioindustries. We report, for the first time, the development of a CRISPR (Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeats) interference (CRISPRi) system for engineering L. citreum. For reliable expression, the expression system of synthetic single guide RNA (sgRNA) and the deactivated Cas9 of Streptococcus pyogenes (SpdCas9) were constructed in a bicistronic design (BCD) platform using a high-copy-number plasmid. The expression of SpdCas9 and sgRNA was optimized by examining the combination of two synthetic promoters and Shine-Dalgarno sequences; the strong expression of sgRNA and the weak expression of SpdCas9 exhibited the most significant downregulation (20-fold decrease) of the target gene (sfGFP), without cell growth retardation caused by SpdCas9 overexpression. The feasibility of the optimized CRISPRi system was demonstrated by modulating the biosynthesis of riboflavin. Using the CRISPRi system, the expression of ribF and folE genes was downregulated (3.3-fold and 5.6-fold decreases, respectively), thereby improving riboflavin production. In addition, the co-expression of the rib operon was introduced and the production of riboflavin was further increased up to 1.7 mg/L, which was 1.53 times higher than that of the wild-type strain. The International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP) recently recommended a new dose conversion factor for radon based on the latest epidemiological studies and dosimetric model. It is important to evaluate an inhalation dose from radon and its progeny. In the present study, a passive radon personal monitor was designed using a small container for storing contact lenses and its performance was evaluated. The conversion factor for radon (222Rn), the effect of thoron (220Rn) concentration and the air exchange rate were evaluated using the calibration chamber at Hirosaki University. The minimum and maximum detectable radon concentrations were calculated. The conversion factor was evaluated as 2.0 ± 0.3 tracks cm-2 per kBq h m-3; statistical analyses of results showed no significant effect from thoron concentration. The minimum and maximum detectable radon concentrations were 92 Bq m-3 and 231 kBq m-3 for a measurement period of three months, respectively. The air exchange rate was estimated to be 0.26 ± 0.16 h-1, whose effect on the measured time-integrated radon concentration was small. These results indicate that the monitor could be used as a wearable monitor for radon measurements, especially in places where radon concentrations may be relatively high, such as mines and caves. This study is devoted to the development of photonic patterns based on polystyrene spheres (PSS) incorporated in chitosan hydrogels by inkjet printing. Using this method, high-resolution encrypted images that became visible only in high humidity were obtained. Inks based on PSS with carboxylic groups on the surface were made, and their rheological parameters (viscosity, surface tension, and ζ-potential) were optimized according to the Ohnesorge theory. The obtained value of the ζ-potential indicated the stability of the synthesized colloidal inks. The dependences of the printing parameters on the concentration of ethylene glycol in PSS dispersion, the drop spacing, the shape of the printed pattern, waveform, the temperature of the printing process, and the degree of ordering of the PSS-based photonic crystal were investigated. The scanning electronic microscope (SEM) images confirmed that the optimal self-organization of PSS was achieved at the following values of 0.4% weight fraction (wt%) carboxylic groups, the drop spacing of 50 μm, and the temperature of the printing table of 25 °C. High-resolution microstructures were obtained by drop-on-demand printing with a deposited drophead diameter of 21 μm and an accuracy of ±2 μm on silicon and glass substrates. The deposition of chitosan-based hydrogels on the obtained polystyrene photonic crystals allowed reversibly changing the order of the diffraction lattice of the photonic crystal during the swelling of the hydrogel matrix, which led to a quick optical response in the daylight. The kinetics of the appearance of the optical response of the obtained coating were discussed. The simplicity of production, the speed of image appearance, and the ability to create high-resolution patterns determine the potential applications of the proposed systems as humidity sensors or anticounterfeiting coatings.Metabolic syndrome, whose main diagnostic component is obesity, is a risk factor for lifestyle-related diseases, type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. Diet is known to affect the prevalence of metabolic syndrome. However, the effect of diet on metabolic syndrome in Japanese subjects has not been thoroughly explored. In the present study, we investigated the effect of carotenoid-rich vegetables, particularly lycopene- and lutein-rich vegetables, on the metabolic syndrome in obese Japanese men. We conducted an 8-week long randomized, double-blinded, controlled clinical trial in which, 28 middle-aged (40 ≤ age less then 65) Japanese men with high body mass index (BMI ≥ 25) were randomized into four dietary groups high lycopene + high lutein (HLyHLu), high lycopene + low lutein (HLyLLu), low lycopene + high lutein (LLyHLu), and low lycopene + low lutein (LLyLLu). Our results showed that daily beverage-intake increased the plasma levels of carotenoids without adverse effects, and the visceral fat level was significantly decreased in all the groups. The waist circumference was significantly decreased only in the HLyLLu group, whereas the CoQ10 oxidation rate was decreased in all the groups. The gene expression profiles of whole blood samples before and after ingestion differed only in the LLyLLu group, indicating the effect of carotenoids on gene expression profile. In conclusion, our results suggest that dietary uptake of carotenoid-rich vegetables increases their concentration in blood and reduces the intra-abdominal visceral fat.Magnolia lucida (Magnoliaceae) is classified as an endangered species by the International Union for Conservation of Nature. It has high commercial value owing to its attractive tree shape and flowers. We adopted an excellent genotype of M. lucida as the parent material and established a mini-cut orchard through grafting to provide trunk shoots explants over the long-term. Optimal sterilization was achieved using a combination of 75% ethanol for 30 s, one percent benzalkonium bromide for five minutes, and 0.1% mercuric chloride for five minutes. Modified Murashige and Skoog medium (ML) was the optimal medium for the growth of M. lucida. Addition of one mg/L of 6-benzyl adenine (BA) and 0.05 mg/L of α-naphthaleneacetic acid (NAA) to the medium increased the shoot induction rate to 95.56%, and the ML medium containing 0.4 mg/L BA and 0.04 mg/L NAA achieved the maximum multiplication rate (284.56%). Dark treatment for seven days, followed by continuous light treatment could better resolve the challenge of difficult rooting in M. lucida plants. Using random amplified polymorphic DNA and inter simple sequence repeat markers, we confirmed the genetic uniformity and stability of the regenerated plants. TAK-779 ic50 Our protocol should be helpful for the propagation and conservation of this endangered plant.Increasing evidence indicates that extracellular vesicles (EVs) released from both tumor cells and the cells of the bone marrow microenvironment contribute to the pathobiology of multiple myeloma (MM). Recent studies on the mechanisms by which EVs exert their biological activity have indicated that the non-coding RNA (ncRNA) cargo is key in mediating their effect on MM development and progression. In this review, we will first discuss the role of EV-associated ncRNAs in different aspects of MM pathobiology, including proliferation, angiogenesis, bone disease development, and drug resistance. Finally, since ncRNAs carried by MM vesicles have also emerged as a promising tool for early diagnosis and therapy response prediction, we will report evidence of their potential use as clinical biomarkers.Coagulopathy and older age are common and well-recognized risk factors for poorer outcomes in traumatic brain injury (TBI) patients; however, the relationships between coagulopathy and age remain unclear. We hypothesized that coagulation/fibrinolytic abnormalities are more pronounced in older patients and may be a factor in poorer outcomes. We retrospectively evaluated severe TBI cases in which fibrinogen and D-dimer were measured on arrival and 3-6 h after injury. Propensity score-matched analyses were performed to adjust baseline characteristics between older patients (the "elderly group," aged ≥75 y) and younger patients (the "non-elderly group," aged 16-74 y). A total of 1294 cases (elderly group 395, non-elderly group 899) were assessed, and propensity score matching created a matched cohort of 324 pairs. Fibrinogen on admission, the degree of reduction in fibrinogen between admission and 3-6 h post-injury, and D-dimer levels between admission and 3-6 h post-injury were significantly more abnormal in the elderly group than in the non-elderly group. On multivariate logistic regression analysis, independent risk factors for poor prognosis included low fibrinogen and high D-dimer levels on admission. Posttraumatic coagulation and fibrinolytic abnormalities are more severe in older patients, and fibrinogen and D-dimer abnormalities are negative predictive factors.
