Density functional theory calculations indicated that the interaction between tetramethylammonium bromide and montmorillonite was mainly electrostatic forces, and the enhanced adsorption performance for toluene was mainly through microporous filling. BMTMt was proved to be a promising adsorbent for VOCs removal. The magnetite@polyaniline (Fe3O4@PANI) composites with different Fe3O4 loadings were prepared, and their effect on methane production in anaerobic systems was investigated. The Fe3O4@PANI composite with a 40% loading of Fe3O4 showed a better performance on accelerating methane production rate than other composites. The methane production rate was increased by 26.98% at the Fe3O4@PANI dosage of 0.6 g L-1. The results of the contact angle and CLSM revealed that Fe3O4@PANI had a good bio-affinity and contact directly with bacteria and archaea. Then the mechanisms related to the enhancement of methane production by the composites were explored by the species annotation and enzyme activity. It showed that Fe3O4@PANI promoted the enrichment of DIET-related functional bacteria and archaea and improved the enzyme activity related to the acetoclastic methanogenic pathway.Short-term increases in particulate matter (PM) are associated with heightened morbidity and mortality from cardiovascular causes. Inhalation of PM is known to increase endothelin (ET)-1 levels. Yet, less is known about particle composition-related changes at the molecular level including the endothelinergic system and relationship with cardiovascular function changes. In this work, adult Wistar male rats were exposed for 4 h by nose-only inhalation to clean air, Ottawa urban particles (EHC-93, 48 mg/m3) and water-leached (EHC-93L, 49 mg/m3) particles, to examine the effect of particle compositional changes on oxidative stress, circulating ETs, blood pressure, and heart electrophysiology. Particle deposition in the respiratory compartment was estimated at 85 μg (25 ng/cm2). Lung cell proliferation was low in both treatment groups, indicating absence of acute injury. Inhalation of EHC-93 caused statistically significant elevations (p less then 0.05) of oxidative stress markers, ET-1, ET-3, blood pressure, and a decrease of ST-segment duration in the ECG at 1.5 days post-exposure. Leached particles (EHC-93L) caused rapid but transient elevation (p less then 0.05) of oxidative stress, ET-1, ET-2, and ET-3 at earlier time points, with no changes in blood pressure or ST-segment. These results demonstrate that inhalation of urban particles at an internal dose inadequate to cause acute lung injury can induce oxidative stress, enhance vasoactive endothelins, leading to vasopressor response, affecting cardiac electrophysiology in Wistar rats, consistent with the cardiovascular impacts of ambient particles in human populations. Change in particle potency after removal of soluble species, notably cadmium, zinc and polar organics suggests that the toxicodynamics of cardiovascular effects can be modified by physicochemical properties of particles.Elevated concentrations of natural organic matter (NOM) and organic micropollutants (OMPs) can contaminate the quality of drinking water, and current water treatment technologies are not always successful in removing all their constituents. Ozonation and adsorption are two advanced processes with different removal mechanisms used to treat NOM and OMPs. Their treatment efficiency depends on the strength and kinetics of adsorption and ozonation (ozone molecule and OH radical (OH•) reaction) of the individual NOM constituents and OMPs. They are individually able to remove many of the NOM fractions and OMPs but not satisfactory in removing the vast array of their components which differ in their physico-chemical characteristics, for example molecular weight, charge, functional groups, aromaticity, and hydrophobicity/hydrophilicity. Significant progress has been made by integrating these processes (ozonation followed by activated carbon (AC) adsorption) but they need further improvement to efficiently target all Nthod for further increasing the efficiency of this process. In this research, insertion of Gd ions (2 wt%) into the crystalline lattice of the ZnS QDs enhanced the photocatalytic activity of the QDs. In addition, the influence of graphene oxide (GO) and graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) was assessed on the photocatalytic activity of the ZnS QDs through degradation of acid red 14 (AR14) and bisphenol-A (BA) under visible light. Higher photocatalytic degradation efficiency (97.1% for AR14 and 67.4% for BA within 180 min) and higher total organic carbon (TOC) removal (67.1% for AR14 and 59.2% for BA within 5 h) was achieved in the presence of ZnS QDs/g-C3N4 compared with ZnS QDs/GO nanocomposite. Finally, the Gd-doped ZnS QDs were hybridized with g-C3N4 as optimal support to fabricate a potent visible-light-driven photocatalyst for the decomposition of organic contaminants. The maximum photocatalytic degradation of 99.1% and 80.5% were achieved for AR14 and BA, respectively, in the presence of Gd-doped ZnS QDs/g-C3N4 nanocomposite. The photosensitization mechanism was suggested for the improved photocatalytic activity of the ZnS QDs/GO, ZnS QDs/g-C3N4, and Gd-doped ZnS QDs/g-C3N4 nanocomposites under visible light.Microplastic pollution has become ubiquitous due to industrialization and wide use of plastic products. The continuous discharge of microplastics into aquatic ecosystems, combined with different toxic chemicals can create serious environmental pollution. Lead is an extremely toxic metal which can strongly adsorb to microplastics, however, little is known about their combined toxicity on submerged macrophytes. To test our hypothesis that microplastic can aggravate lead toxicity on submerged macrophytes, we designed a five-day hydroponic experiment to explore the toxic effects of microplastic and lead alone, and in combination, on Potamogeton crispus and Vallisneria denseserrulata. Photosynthetic pigment, chlorophyll fluorescence (Fv/Fm and ETRmax), soluble sugar, protein and malondialdehyde (MDA) declined with increasing lead concentration alone and in the combined treatment. In both submerged macrophytes, the level of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and lead bioaccumulation increased with increasing lead concentration. However, microplastic aggravated lead toxicity on chlorophyll a and SOD activity in P. crispus only under the highest lead concentration. In conclusion, lead alone and combined exposure caused a series of toxic effects on physio-biochemical traits of submerged macrophytes that appeared to be synergistic and species-specific. selleck products Our comprehensive results have important implications for appropriate management of microplastics and lead alone, or in combination, for submerged macrophytes.Dibutyltin dichloride (DBTCl) is a widespread environmental pollutant that is frequently employed as a light and heat sustainer for polyvinyl chloride (PVC) plastics and is a teratogen in vivo. Nevertheless, its destructiveness in mammalian oocytes remains unclear. This study highlighted the consequences of DBTCl vulnerability on mouse oocyte. Our results revealed that exposure to 5.0 mg/kg/day of DBTCl for ten days reduced the number of mature follicles and oocytes in the ovaries and inhibited the meiotic maturation of oocytes. Single-cell transcriptomic analysis indicated that DBTCl exposure interfered with the expression of more than 400 genes in oocytes, including those involved in multiple biological pathways. Specifically, DBTCl exposure impaired spindle assembly and chromosome alignment. In addition, DBTCl exposure caused mitochondrial dysfunction, which led to the accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and induced apoptosis. In summary, our study illustrates that mitochondrial dysfunction and redox perturbation are the major causes of the reduced quality of oocytes exposed to DBTCl.Recent epidemiological studies show that current levels of exposure to polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) remain of great concern, as there is still a link between such exposures and the development of chronic environmental diseases. In this sense, most studies have focused on the health effects caused by exposure to dioxin-like PCBs (DL-PCBs), although chemical exposure to non-dioxin-like PCB (NDL-PCB) congeners is more significant. In addition, adverse effects of PCBs have been documented in humans after accidental and massive exposure, but little is known about the effect of chronic exposure to low-dose PCB mixtures. In this work, exposure to Aroclor 1260 (i.e. a commercially available mixture of PCBs consisting primarily of NDL-PCB congeners) in pigs is investigated as new evidence in the risk assessment of NDL-PCBs. This animal model has been selected due to the similarities with human metabolism and to support previous toxicological studies carried out with more frequently used animal models. Dietary exposure doses in the order of few ng/kg body weight (b.w.) per day were applied. As expected, exposure to Aroclor 1260 led to the bioaccumulation of NDL-PCBs in perirenal fat of pigs. Metabolomics and lipidomics have been applied to reveal biomarkers of effect related to Aroclor 1260 exposure, and by extension to NDL-PCB exposure, for 21 days. In the metabolomics analysis, 33 metabolites have been identified (level 1 and 2) as significantly altered by the Aroclor 1260 administration, while in the lipidomics analysis, 39 metabolites were putatively annotated (level 3) and associated with NDL-PCB exposure. These biomarkers are mainly related to the alteration of fatty acid metabolism, glycerophospholipid metabolism and tryptophan-kynurenine pathway.Biochar application to chemical-amended paddy soils has been proposed as a potential strategy to enhance nitrogen (N) retention and nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) by crops. However, optimal concentrations for these enhancements and the potential drivers are not well understood. Herein, a column-based pot experiment was carried out to investigate the impacts of reed-biochar application rate on N losses and dynamics in paddy soils treated by chemical fertilizer, and particularly, to explore the dominant factors of the processes. The addition of 2-4% reed-biochar had the most significant effects on mitigating N loss by leaching. Reed-biochar amendment increased soil total N and mineral N (NH4+-N and NO3--N) content, and denitrifying gene abundance, and the increments of those variables were positively related to the application rate. Soil treated with 1-4% reed-biochar at harvest period showed higher gene abundances of ammonia-oxidizing and dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonium (DNRA) and higher activity of β-1,4-N-acetyl-glucosaminidase (NAG) and leucine aminopeptidase compared with the 4-8% application rate. The amoA-AOA gene abundance, NAG activity, and total carbon (C) content were the main predictors of total N and mineral N accumulated leakage. Total C content was the main predictor of soil total N and mineral N content, followed by the pH and NAG activity. These results suggest that adding 2-4% reed-biochar was more beneficial to mitigate N loss and thus enhance soil N storage and availability. This study highlights the importance of understanding how microbial populations mediate N transformation to decipher biochar-driven NUE enhancement in paddy soils.
