The enhancement of optical characteristics at optical frequencies deviates with the choice of the arrangement of core-shell nanoparticles and their environment. learn more Likewise, the arrangements of core-shell nanoparticles in the air over a substrate or in liquid solution makes them unstable in the atmosphere. This article suggests designing a configuration of an active spherical coated nanoparticle antenna and its extended array in the presence of a passive dielectric, which is proposed to be extendable to construct larger arrays. The issue of instability in the core-shell nanoantenna array models is solved here by inserting the passive dielectric. In addition to this, the inclusion of a dielectric in the array model reports a different directivity behaviour than the conventional array models. We found at first that the combination model of the active coated nanoparticle and passive sphere at the resonant frequency can excite a stronger field with a rotated polarization direction and a propagation direction different from the incident plane-wave. Furthermore, the extended 2D array also rotates the polarization direction and propagation direction for the vertical incident plane-wave. The radiation beam operates strong multipoles in the 2D array plane at resonant frequency (behaving non-conventionally). Nevertheless, it forms a clear main beam in the incident direction when it deviates from the resonance frequency (behaving conventionally). The proposed array model may have possible applications in nano-amplifiers, nano-sensors and other integrated optics. The aim of this paper is to formulate the physical layer of the broadband and narrowband power line communication (PLC) systems described in standards IEEE 1901 and IEEE 1901.2, which address new communication technologies over electrical networks for Smart Grid and Internet of Things applications. Specifically, this paper presents a mathematical formulation by means of matrices of a transmitter and receiver system based on windowed OFDM. The proposed formulation is essential for obtaining the input-output relation, as well as an analysis of the interference present in the system. It is very useful for simulating PLC systems using software designed to operate primarily on whole matrices and arrays, such as Matlab. In addition, it eases the analysis and design of different receiver configurations, simply by modifying or adding a matrix. Since the relevant standards only describe the blocks corresponding to the transmitter, and leave the set-up of the receiver open to the manufacturer, we analysed four different possible schemes that include window functions in different configurations. In simulations, the behaviour of each of these schemes is analysed in terms of bit error and achievable data rates using artificial and real noises.Uremic sarcopenia is a frequent condition present in chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients and is characterized by reduced muscle mass, muscle strength and physical performance. Uremic sarcopenia is related to an increased risk of hospitalization and all-causes mortality. This pathological condition is caused not only by advanced age but also by others factors typical of CKD patients such as metabolic acidosis, hemodialysis therapy, low-grade inflammatory status and inadequate protein-energy intake. Currently, treatments available to ameliorate uremic sarcopenia include nutritional therapy (oral nutritional supplement, inter/intradialytic parenteral nutrition, enteral nutrition, high protein and fiber diet and percutaneous endoscopic gastrectomy) and a personalized program of physical activity. The aim of this review is to analyze the possible benefits induced by nutritional therapy alone or in combination with a personalized program of physical activity, on onset and/or progression of uremic sarcopenia.Superparamagnetic nanoparticles have seen increased potential in medical and environmental applications. Their preparation is traditionally made by the coprecipitation method, with limited control over the particle size distribution. Microemulsion methods could be advantageous due to the efficient control of the size, shape, and composition of the nanoparticles obtained. Water-in-oil (W/O) microemulsions consist of aqueous microdomains dispersed in a continuous oil phase, stabilized by surfactant molecules. These work as nanoreactors where the synthesis of the desired nanoparticles takes place through a co-precipitation chemical reaction. In this work, superparamagnetic magnetite nanoparticles with average diameters between 5.4 and 7.2 nm and large monodispersity have been synthesized through precipitation in a W/O microemulsion, with Cetyl Trimethyl Ammonium Bromide (CTAB) as a main surfactant, 1-butanol as a cosurfactant, and with 1-hexanol as the continuous oily phase. The optimization of the corresponding washing protocol has also been established since a strict control is required when using these materials for bioapplications. Their applicability in those has been proved by their encapsulation in liposomes, being tested as signal enhancers for lateral flow immunoassays by using the affinity neutravidin-biotin model system. Due to their magnetic behaviour, they were also tested for magnetic separation. These novel materials have been found to be useful for analytical applications requiring high sensitivity and the removal of interferences.Osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) is a heritable disorder that mainly affects the skeleton. The inheritance is mostly autosomal dominant and associated to mutations in one of the two genes, COL1A1 and COL1A2, encoding for the type I collagen α chains. According to more than 1500 described mutation sites and to outcome spanning from very mild cases to perinatal-lethality, OI is characterized by a wide genotype/phenotype heterogeneity. In order to identify common affected molecular-pathways and disease biomarkers in OI probands with different mutations and lethal or surviving phenotypes, primary fibroblasts from dominant OI patients, carrying COL1A1 or COL1A2 defects, were investigated by applying a Tandem Mass Tag labeling-Liquid Chromatography-Tandem Mass Spectrometry (TMT LC-MS/MS) proteomics approach and bioinformatic tools for comparative protein-abundance profiling. While no difference in α1 or α2 abundance was detected among lethal (type II) and not-lethal (type III) OI patients, 17 proteins, with key effects on matrix structure and organization, cell signaling, and cell and tissue development and differentiation, were significantly different between type II and type III OI patients. Among them, some non-collagenous extracellular matrix (ECM) proteins (e.g., decorin and fibrillin-1) and proteins modulating cytoskeleton (e.g., nestin and palladin) directly correlate to the severity of the disease. Their defective presence may define proband-failure in balancing aberrances related to mutant collagen.Demand of scaffolds for hard tissue repair increases due to a higher incidence of fractures related to accidents and bone-diseases that are linked to the ageing of the population. Namely, scaffolds loaded with bioactive agents can facilitate the bone repair by favoring the bone integration and avoiding post-grafting complications. Supercritical (sc-)foaming technology emerges as a unique solvent-free approach for the processing of drug-loadenu7d scaffolds at high incorporation yields. In this work, medicated poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL) scaffolds were prepared by sc-foaming coupled with a leaching process to overcome problems of pore size tuning of the sc-foaming technique. The removal of the solid porogen (BA, ammonium bicarbonate) was carried out by a thermal leaching taking place at 37 °C and in the absence of solvents for the first time. Macroporous scaffolds with dual porosity (50-100 µm and 200-400 µm ranges) were obtained and with a porous structure directly dependent on the porogen content used. The processing of ketoprofen-loaded scaffolds using BA porogen resulted in drug loading yields close to 100% and influenced its release profile from the PCL matrix to a relevant clinical scenario. A novel solvent-free strategy has been set to integrate the incorporation of solid porogens in the sc-foaming of medicated scaffolds. As a new material, graphene shows excellent properties in mechanics, electricity, optics, and so on, which makes it widely concerned by people. At present, it is difficult for graphene pressure sensor to meet both high sensitivity and large pressure detection range at the same time. Therefore, it is highly desirable to produce flexible pressure sensors with sufficient sensitivity in a wide working range and with simple process. Herein, a relatively high flexible pressure sensor based on piezoresistivity is presented by combining the conical microstructure polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) with bilayer graphene together. The piezoresistive material (bilayer graphene) attached to the flexible substrate can convert the local deformation caused by the vertical force into the change of resistance. Results show that the pressure sensor based on conical microstructure PDMS-bilayer graphene can operate at a pressure range of 20 kPa while maintaining a sensitivity of 0.122 ± 0.002 kPa-1 (0-5 kPa) and 0.077 ± 0.002 kPa-1 (5-20 kPa), respectively. The response time of the sensor is about 70 ms. In addition to the high sensitivity of the pressure sensor, it also has excellent reproducibility at different pressure and temperature. The pressure sensor based on conical microstructure PDMS-bilayer graphene can sense the motion of joint well when the index finger is bent, which makes it possible to be applied in electronic skin, flexible electronic devices, and other fields. The high quantile estimation of heavy tailed distributions has many important applications. There are theoretical difficulties in studying heavy tailed distributions since they often have infinite moments. There are also bias issues with the existing methods of confidence intervals (CIs) of high quantiles. This paper proposes a new estimator for high quantiles based on the geometric mean. The new estimator has good asymptotic properties as well as it provides a computational algorithm for estimating confidence intervals of high quantiles. The new estimator avoids difficulties, improves efficiency and reduces bias. Comparisons of efficiencies and biases of the new estimator relative to existing estimators are studied. The theoretical are confirmed through Monte Carlo simulations. Finally, the applications on two real-world examples are provided. In Brazilian universities, the university restaurant (UR) is essential in supporting students to complete their courses, as the UR offers free or low-cost food. In this sense, this research aimed to evaluate public policy effectiveness in offering food to low-income students attending the UR of the University of Brasília. This cross-sectional study compared low-income students (participating in the Student Assistance Program-Group 1) and students that did not participate in the Program (Group 2). Researchers assessed food consumption through direct observation of students while serving their plates at UR (in all meals consumed at UR) and completed food consumption with diet recalls for the meals outside the UR. In total, three complete days, including one weekend day, were evaluated for each student. Researchers also evaluated the participants' body mass composition and body fat percentage. The results of the comparisons between the evaluated groups showed that the groups presented similar intakes. Only sodium intake was significantly different for males, being higher for Group 1.
