Using measured mass loss of paired (weathered versus unweathered) equivalents and the age of blocks obtained from storage we estimate residence times of between about 100 and 1300 years for this type and thickness of plastic, with variations reflecting differences in precise additive composition and modes of weathering. Plastic pollution presents a global environmental concern with potentially widespread ecological, socio-economic and health implications. Methodological advances in microplastic extraction, quantification and identification from sediments have been made. However, integrating these fragmentary advances into a holistic, cost-effective protocol and applying it to organic rich sediments with fine grain size remains a challenge. Nonetheless, many hot spots of microplastic contamination such as harbour and estuarine sediments are characterised by such sediments. We conducted a series of experiments to integrate methodological advances, and clarify their applicability to organic rich sediments with fine grain size. The resulting protocol consisted of three stages. First, pre-treatment with Fenton's reagent was found to be efficient in reducing organic matter content, compatible with later Fourier Transform-Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR) for polymer identification, although it did affect the size of polyethylene (PE) ing of microplastic contamination. Silver (Ag) is amongst the most well studied nanomaterials (NMs), although most studies have only dealt with a single AgNM at a time and one biological endpoint. We here integrate the results of various testing-tools (endpoints) using a terrestrial worm, the standard ecotoxicological model organism Enchytraeus crypticus. Exposure spanned both water and soil exposure, it covered all life stages (cocoons, juveniles and adults), varying exposure durations (1-2-3-4-5-21 days), and covered 5 biological endpoints hatching success, survival, reproduction, avoidance and gene expression (qPCR target genes GABA and Acetyl cholinesterase). We tested 4 Ag materials PVP coated (PVP-AgNM), non-coated (NC-AgNM), the JRC reference Ag NM300K and AgNO3. Results showed that short-term exposure via water to assess impact on cocoons' hatching predicted longer term effects such as survival and reproduction. HHT inhibitor Moreover, if we extended the exposure from 11 to 17 day this allowed discrimination between hatch delay and impairment. Exposure of juveniles and adults via water showed that juveniles were most sensitive with survival affected. Across materials the following toxic ranking was observed AgNO3 ≥ Ag NM300K ≫ NC-AgNM ≥ PVP-AgNM. E. crypticus avoided AgNO3 in a dose-response manner, avoiding most during the first 24 h. Avoidance of Ag NM300K and NC-AgNM only occurred during the first 24 h and the PVP coated AgNM were not avoided at all. The up-regulation of the GABA triggering anesthetic effects, indicated the high ecological impact of Ag materials in soil Ag affects the GABAergic system hence organisms were not able to efficiently avoid and became intoxicated, this caused impacts in terms of survival and reproduction. Arsenic (As) is a toxic element that leads the list of human health threats and is one of the priority contaminants in soil and water. In order to remove As(V) and/or reduce its mobility, filters and amendments with high affinity for As(V) adsorption are used in drinking water treatment or directly applied to the soil, thereby promoting its immobilization. Hausmannite and hematite were compared by in-situ Attenuated Total Reflection - Fourier Transform Infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopy and batch experiments for evaluating As(V) adsorption and sequential desorption by citrate. The pH and contact time were used as variables. Hausmanite adsorbed more As(V) than hematite. As(V) was adsorbed on the mineral surface of simultaneously inner- and outer-sphere species. Inner-sphere bidentate complex form preferentially at high pH, early adsorption time and low surface loading, while the monodentate species should be responsible to increase total As(V) adsorption at low pH, later adsorption kinetics and higher As(V) surface loading. Citrate was effective in causing As(V) desorption at higher citric acid concentrations and higher pH values. After a long time of incubation, the neogenesis of a manganite by hausmnannite oxidation was observed. Concomitantly, less As(V) was desorbed by citrate desorption, even in the presence of high citric acid concentrations. Hausmannite was an efficient mineral for As(V) removal and immobilization. The aim of this paper is to explore whether in the eyes of young adolescents the consumption of different alcoholic beverages is associated with different alcohol expectancies, namely beliefs on what emotional outcomes take place when alcohol is consumed. 283 nine to 12-year olds from Switzerland completed the Alcohol Expectancy Task (AET). Participants were asked to assign one of 12 beverages (four alcoholic, eight non-alcoholic) to 16 adults depicting four emotional states (happy, angry, relaxed, sad). General linear modelling was used to examine beverage attributions across the four different emotional states. Beer was the most commonly attributed beverage across all 16 adults depicted. Happy and angry persons were most commonly attributed beer. Gender variations were found for relaxed persons, with females predominantly attributed champagne and males predominantly attributed beer. Young adolescents predominantly gave white wine to sad persons. Findings reveal a level of nuanced knowledge existing among young adolescents with minimal drinking experience, in that they hold very different expectancies for different beverages, prompting for future investigations to examine beverage-specific expectancies. Furthermore, findings showing beverage-specific expectancies among young adolescents may have implications for researchers' considerations of how alcohol-related knowledge and expectancies develop throughout childhood. Mental disorders are highly complex and multifactorial in origin, comprising an elaborate interplay of genetic and environmental factors. Epigenetic mechanisms such as DNA modifications (e.g. CpG methylation), histone modifications (e.g. acetylation) and microRNAs function as a translator between genes and the environment. Indeed, environmental influences such as exposure to stress shape epigenetic patterns, and lifetime experiences continue to alter the function of the genome throughout the lifespan. Here, we summarize the recently burgeoning body of research regarding the involvement of aberrant epigenetic signatures in mediating an increased vulnerability to a wide range of mental disorders. We review the current knowledge of epigenetic changes to constitute useful markers predicting the clinical response to psychotherapeutic interventions, and of psychotherapy to alter - and potentially reverse - epigenetic risk patterns. Given first evidence pointing to a transgenerational transmission of epigenetic information, epigenetic alterations arising from successful psychotherapy might be transferred to future generations and thus contribute to the prevention of mental disorders. link2 Findings are integrated into a multi-level framework highlighting challenges pertaining to the mechanisms of action and clinical implications of epigenetic research. Promising future directions regarding the prediction, prevention, and personalized treatment of mental disorders in line with a 'precision medicine' approach are discussed. We investigated if growth mindsets-the belief in the malleable nature of human attributes-are negatively related to psychological distress and if they are positively related to treatment value and active coping. In the meta-analysis, we included articles published between 1988 and 2019, written in English, that reported on mindsets as well as a qualifying dependent variable and included information required to calculate an effect size. With a random effects approach, meta-analytic results (k = 72 samples, N = 17,692) demonstrated that mindsets relate, albeit with minimal effects, to distress, treatment and coping. Specifically, there is a negative relation between growth mindsets and psychological distress (r = -0.220), a positive relation between growth mindsets and treatment value (r = 0.137) and a positive relation between growth mindsets and active coping (r = 0.207). link3 Differences in mindset domain, assessment method of mindsets and timing of assessments moderated effects. There were not differences based on operationalization of psychological distress outcome or sample characteristics (i.e., developmental stage, diagnostic status, ethnicity). We discuss theoretical and practical applications of the findings. Encapsulation of three superoxide dismutase (SOD) functional mimics, [CuZn(dien)2(μ-Im)(ClO4)2]ClO4 (1), [Cu2(dien)2(μ-Im)(ClO4)2]ClO4 (2) (Im = imidazolate, dien = diethylenetriamine), and [CuZn(salpn)Cl2] (3) (H2salpn = 1,3-bis(salicylideneamino)propane) in mesoporous MCM-41 silica afforded three hybrid catalysts 1@MCM-41, 2@MCM-41 and 3@MCM-41. Spectroscopic and magnetic analyses of these materials confirmed the metal centers of the complexes keep the coordination sphere after insertion into the MCM-41 silica matrix. For the imidazolate-bridged complexes the silica channels restraint the relative orientation of the two metal ions. While 3@MCM-41 shows SOD activity significantly lower than the host-free complex, insertion of the imidazolate-bridged CuZn or Cu2 complexes by ion exchange onto mesoporous MCM-41 silica affords durable and recoverable supported catalysts with much better SOD activity than the free complexes. For confined imidazolate-bridged complexes, 1@MCM-41 and 2@MCM-41, the small pore size of the silica matrix improves the SOD activity more than a host with larger pores. This high SOD activity is attributed to the close-fitting of the complexes into the nanochannels of MCM-41 silica that favors the Cu active site and HImZn(or Cu) group stay in close proximity during catalysis. This is the first large scale study of fate of the glyphosate (GLP) and its metabolites, (AMPA, N-acetyl glyphosate, N-acetyl AMPA, sarcosine and glycine) monitored by LC/MS/MS. The laboratory trials of behavior of GLP in two types of agricultural soil were performed. Soil (S), soil enriched with sewage sludge (S + SL), soil with Pseudomonas fluorescens (S + P) and soil enriched with sewage sludge and P. fluorescens (S + SL + P) was treated with Roundup 360 SL under controlled conditions. The presence of metabolites was depended on the soil type and enrichment with sludge or bacteria. The GLP and its soil metabolites caused increase of microorganisms association in comparison to control. We assumed that P. fluorescens and sewage sludge influence on time of GLP dissipation. Moreover, GLP degradation in presence of P. fluorescens and sewage sludge is carried out in different metabolic pathways compared to control (S + GLP). Furthermore, presence of particular GLP metabolites is related to different metabolic pathways and is connected with P. fluorescens and sewage sludge occurrence in soil. Additionally, P. fluorescens and sewage sludge stimulate enzymatic activity of soils.
