With a neutron component, morphology is a key parameter in the organ dose calculation. As the simulation tools can be time consuming to proceed, especially if morphology is taken into account, for all the victims, it may be very useful to have a database of conversion coefficients that allow to obtain the organ doses from the dose measured in the dosemeter for different kinds of morphology. In this paper, we present a study performed to evaluate such conversion coefficients using voxelized anthropomorphic phantoms. These coefficients take into account two crucial parameters having an impact on the dose at the organs the orientation of the victim in the radiation field and the morphology, that is to say the body mass index of the different victims.

Although congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH) is known to be associated with adrenal crises (AC), its association with patient- or clinician-reported sick day episodes (SDE) is less clear.

Data on children with classic 21-hydroxylase deficiency CAH from 34 centers in 18 countries, of which 7 were Low or Middle Income Countries (LMIC) and 11 were High Income (HIC), were collected from the International CAH Registry and analyzed to examine the clinical factors associated with SDE and AC.

A total of 518 children-with a median of 11 children (range 1, 53) per center-had 5388 visits evaluated over a total of 2300 patient-years. The median number of AC and SDE per patient-year per center was 0 (0, 3) and 0.4 (0.0, 13.3), respectively. Of the 1544 SDE, an AC was reported in 62 (4%), with no fatalities. Infectious illness was the most frequent precipitating event, reported in 1105 (72%) and 29 (47%) of SDE and AC, respectively. On comparing cases from LMIC and HIC, the median SDE per patient-year was 0.75 (0, 13.3) vs 0.11 (0, 12.0) (P < 0.001), respectively, and the median AC per patient-year was 0 (0, 2.2) vs 0 (0, 3.0) (P = 0.43), respectively.

Plants produce a plethora of chemically diverse secondary metabolites, many of which exert bioactive effects on microorganisms. Several recent publications have unequivocally shown that plant secondary metabolites affect microbiome composition and function. These studies have pinpointed that the microbiome can be influenced by a diverse set of molecules, including coumarins, glucosinolates, benzoxazinoids, camalexin, and triterpenes. In this review, we summarize the role of secondary metabolites in shaping the plant microbiome, highlighting recent literature. A body of knowledge is now emerging that links specific plant metabolites with distinct microbial responses, mediated via defined biochemical mechanisms. There is significant potential to boost agricultural sustainability via the targeted enhancement of beneficial microbial traits, and here we argue that the newly discovered links between root chemistry and microbiome composition could provide a new set of tools for rationally manipulating the plant microbiome.Current microfluidic methods for studying multicell strains (e.g., m-types) with multienvironments (e.g., n-types) require large numbers of inlets/outlets (m*n), a complicated procedure or expensive machinery. Here, we developed a novel two-layer-integrated method to combine different PDMS microchannel layers with different functions into one chip by a PDMS through-hole array, which improved the design of a PDMS-based microfluidic system. Using this method, we succeeded in converting 2 × m × n inlets/outlets into m + n inlets/outlets and reduced the time cost of loading processing (from m × n to m) of the device for studying multicell strains (e.g., m-types) in varied multitemporal environments (i.e., n-types). Using this device, the dynamic behavior of the cell-stress-response proteins was studied when the glucose concentration decreased from 2% to a series of lower concentrations. Our device could also be widely used in high-throughput studies of various stress responses, and the new concept of a multilayer-integrated fabrication method could greatly improve the design of PDMS-based microfluidic systems.

In patients with ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI), predicting left ventricular (LV) remodelling (LVR) and prognosis is important. We explored the clinical usefulness of three-dimensional (3D) speckle-tracking echocardiography to predict LVR and prognosis in STEMI.

The study group comprised 255 first STEMI patients (65 years; 210 men) treated with primary percutaneous coronary intervention between April 2008 and May 2012 at Yokohama City University Medical Center. Baseline global longitudinal strain (GLS) was measured with two-dimensional (2D) and 3D speckle-tracking echocardiography. Within 48 of admission, standard 2D echocardiography and 3D full-volume imaging were performed, and 2D-GLS and 3D-GLS were calculated. Infarct size was estimated by 99mTc-sestamibi single-photon emission computed tomography. Echocardiography was performed at 1 year repeatedly in 239 patients. The primary endpoint was LVR, defined as an increase of 20% of LV end-diastolic volume index and major adverse cardiac and cerebrovascular events (MACE cardiac death, non-fatal MI, heart failure, and ischaemic stroke) at 1 year, and the secondary endpoint was cardiac death and heart failure. Patients were followed for 1 year; 64, 25, and 16 patients experienced LVR, MACE, and the secondary endpoint, respectively. Multivariate analysis revealed that 3D-GLS was the strongest predictor of LVR (odds ratio = 1.437, 95% CI 1.047-2.257, P = 0.02), MACE (odds ratio = 1.443, 95% CI 1.240-1.743, P = 0.0002), and the secondary end point (odds ratio = 1.596, 95% CI 1.17-1.56, P < 0.0001). Receiver-operating characteristic curve analysis showed that 3D-GLS was superior to 2D-GLS in predicting LVR and 1-year prognosis.

In response to drought stress, plants quickly accumulate ABA, but the regulatory mechanism of ABA accumulation is largely unknown, especially in woody plants. In this study, we report that MdMYB88 and MdMYB124 are myeloblastosis (MYB) transcription factors critical for ABA accumulation in apple trees (Malus x domestica) following drought, and this regulation is negatively controlled by ABA. MdMYB88 and MdMYB124 positively regulate leaf water transpiration, photosynthetic capacity, and stress endurance in apple trees under drought conditions. MdMYB88 and MdMYB124 regulate the expression of biosynthetic and catabolic genes of ABA, as well as drought- and ABA- responsive genes. MdMYB88 associates with promoter regions of the ABA biosynthetic gene 9-cis-epoxycarotenoid dioxygenase 3 (NCED3). Finally, expression of MdMYB88 and MdMYB124 is repressed by ABA. Our results identify a feedback regulation of MdMYB88 and MdMYB124 in modulating ABA homeostasis in apple trees.

Cardiac troponin (cTn) and N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) are increasingly used clinically to evaluate and prognosticate acute myocardial infarction and heart failure, respectively. Pediatric reference intervals and cut-offs have not been established for Roche's Elecsys Troponin T hs (high sensitive) assay. Although pediatric reference intervals exist for NT-proBNP, cut-off values do not exist. In this study, we report reference intervals and 99th percentile cut-offs in a large, healthy Canadian pediatric population using the CALIPER cohort.

Blood samples from 484 healthy children and adolescents between 0 and <19 years old were recruited from hospital outpatient clinics and community settings. Serum samples were analyzed using Roche's Cobas e411 and evaluated for high-sensitivity cTnT (hs-cTnT) and NT-proBNP concentrations. We investigated the genetic diversity, molecular epidemiology and evolutionary dynamics of Staphylococcus aureus (SA) isolated from SLE patients by means of phylogenetic analysis.

Consecutive SLE patients (ACR 1997 criteria) were enrolled clinical/laboratory data were collected and nasal swab for SA identification was performed. On the basis of the translation elongation factor (tuf) gene, a phylogenetic analysis was performed to investigate relationships and to assess significant clades. Selective pressure analysis was used to investigate the evolution of the SA tuf gene. The gene sequences from non-SLE individuals, downloaded from the GenBank database, were compared through phylogenetic analysis with the tuf gene from SLE patients.
