As an injectable anticancer drug delivery system, the biological safety of nanocarriers is the most important prerequisite for their clinical application. The objective of our study was to synthesize special ultrasound-responsive highly biocompatible chitosan nanodroplets (BCNDs), observe their spatiotemporally control the delivery of doxorubicin (DOX) in vivo. The experimental results showed that the BCNDs were successfully prepared with high biosafety in vivo and great ultrasound imaging ability. DOX-BCNDs promoted the anticancer effects of DOX in vivo and inhibited the development of tumors. They also reduced the side effects to the heart and kidneys. In conclusion, BCNDs are a new type of smart nanocarrier with high biocompatibility and efficacy have great potential to be used in the clinic. Two new compounds, including a nor-pimarane diterpenoid (continentanol, 1) and a phenolic derivative (aralianic acid, 2), along with the known diterpenoids (3-11), polyacetylenes (12-15), phenolic components (16-28), and phytosterols (29 and 30), were isolated from roots of Aralia continentalis. The structures of the new compounds were established by spectroscopic data interpretation, particularly HRESIMS, 1 D and 2 D NMR data including HSQC and HMBC. Also, those of the known compounds were identified by spectral comparison with those of the reported values.Heavy oil accounts for around one-third of total global oil and gas resources. The progressive depletion of conventional energy reserves has led to an increased emphasis on the efficient exploitation of heavy oil and bitumen reserves in order to meet energy demand. Therefore, it is imperative to develop new technologies for heavy oil upgrading and recovery. Biologically-based technology that involves using microorganisms or their metabolites to mobilize heavy oil trapped in reservoir rocks can make a significant contribution to the recovery of heavy oils. Here, the results of laboratory experiments and field trials applying microbial enhanced oil recovery (MEOR) technologies are summarized. This review provides an overview of the basic concepts, mechanisms, advantages, problems, and trends in MEOR, and demonstrates the credibility of MEOR methods for applications in enhanced heavy oil recovery and the petroleum refining processes. This technology is cost-effective and environmentally-friendly. The feasibility of MEOR technologies for heavier oil has not yet been fully realized due to the perceived process complexity and a lack of sufficient laboratory research and field test data. However, novel developments such as enzyme-enhanced oil recovery continues to improve MEOR methods.HighlightsHeavy oil represents the largest known potentially-recoverable petroleum energy resource.Novel biotechnological processes are needed to recover or upgrade heavy oil.Microbial technologies have great potential for heavy oil recovery.Microorganisms can produce metabolic byproducts to mobilize oil trapped in reservoirs.More technological research is needed to develop microbial enhanced oil recovery. We aimed to investigate the association between dietary patterns and depressive symptoms among 217 Iranian women aged 20-45 years. In this study, dietary intake was assessed using a valid and reliable semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire. A principal component analysis was applied to detect the major dietary patterns. The Beck Depression Inventory was used to assess the depressive symptoms. Two major dietary patterns were identified the "semi-Mediterranean" dietary pattern and the "western" dietary pattern. Participants with the "western" dietary pattern had a higher rate of depressive symptoms (p  less then  0.05). However, the "semi-Mediterranean" dietary pattern had no significant association with the depressive symptoms.Based on the theory of social representations, this study aims to identify the main determinants to participation in colorectal cancer screening. Six focus groups (N = 29 participants belonging to the general population) were conducted, followed by a theoretical thematic analysis. Screening obstacles are a lack of test's accessibility, a low preoccupation for prevention and the negative image of colorectal cancer. Conversely, screening facilitators are the ease of the new test, being encouraged to get screened and appointment reminder. This study advances understanding of adherence to screening by addressing the beliefs and knowledge surrounding it.Greater school absenteeism is associated with numerous negative educational outcomes. We used a retrospective cohort design with linked administrative data on 296,422 children to examine the relationship between school absenteeism and child protection system (CPS) involvement. Children with substantiated maltreatment had 4.1 times more unexplained and problem absences than children with no CPS involvement. In multivariate analyses, children with substantiated maltreatment had significantly greater "chronic" truancy (OR = 3.41) and less "acceptable" levels of absences (OR = 0.74) compared to children with no CPS involvement. Greater absenteeism was seen for children with substantiated neglect and who had their first CPS notification earlier in life. Being in out-of-home care for 3+ years was a protective factor for children who had a CPS notification before age 5. Additional adversities had a strong additive effect with CPS involvement on absenteeism and chronic truancy. This study demonstrates the potential scope for reducing problem absenteeism and helps inform the public debate regarding how the type and timing of CPS involvement might ameliorate or exacerbate harm for children.Aim Poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase inhibitors (PARPIs) improved progression-free survival among patients with recurrent ovarian cancer. This meta-analysis examined the effectiveness of PARPIs as maintenance strategy for newly diagnosed patients with advanced high-grade ovarian cancer with or without mutations. Materials & methods Using defined selection criteria, a literature search identified four eligible randomized clinical trials involving 2386 patients. Aprotinin research buy Results Compared with placebo maintenance, PARPIs achieved a 46% reduction in the risk of progression or death as compared with placebo (hazard ratio 0.54; 95% CI 0.39-0.73; p less then 0.0001). That benefit was shown in all clinical subgroups among those with BRCA mutation, with negative/unknown BRCA mutation, and in those with homologous recombination deficient tumors. Data about the effect on overall survival are still premature. Conclusion In patients with newly diagnosed advanced ovarian cancer, PARPIs maintenance after standard therapy achieved a significant improvement in progression-free survival as compared with placebo, overall and in all subgroups.Aim To explore the prognostic value of the systemic inflammatory marker (SIM) based on neutrophil, lymphocyte and monocyte counts in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) patients. Patients & methods We retrospectively collected the data of 367 patients with HNSCC who underwent surgery. The Kaplan-Meier survival analysis and Cox regression analysis were conducted on disease-free survival and overall survival. Results A high SIM (>1.34) was associated with larger tumor size, advanced clinical stage and shorter survival time. The survival analysis showed that only clinical stage and SIM were independent prognostic indicators of disease-free survival and overall survival. Conclusion The SIM positively correlated with tumor progression and might be a powerful prognostic indicator of poor outcome in patients with HNSCC.Aim We aimed to examine the association between baseline mean platelet volume/platelet count ratio (MPR) and all-cause mortality in patients with infective endocarditis (IE). Patients & methods This study analyzed 218 consecutive patients with IE and divided them into four groups based on MPR quartiles. We used Kaplan-Meier survival curves to determine the cumulative survival and Cox proportional hazards models to investigate the association between MPR and all-cause mortality after hospital discharge. Results Kaplan-Meier curves showed a gradual increase in mortality risk from the lowest MPR quartile to the highest quartile. Multivariate analysis revealed that MPR was an independent predictor of increased risk for all-cause death. Conclusion Elevated MPR was independently associated with long-term all-cause mortality in patients with IE.Hispanic/Latino immigrants often experience significant adversity before, during, and after migrating to the United States. However, no extant studies have tested the construct validity of a cumulative measure of lifetime adversity with Hispanic/Latino immigrants. Our objective was to assess the construct validity of a comprehensive measurement model of lifetime adversity (i.e., adverse childhood experiences, adult chronic stress, adult perceived stress, adult acculturation stress, and lifetime ethnic discrimination) with a national sample of Hispanic/Latinos born outside the mainland United States. Guided by the life course perspective, we examined the (a) dimensionality of cumulative lifetime adversity; (b) extent to which the functioning of this measurement model differed across various Hispanic/Latino subgroups including Mexicans, Cubans, Puerto Ricans, Dominicans, Central Americans, and South Americans; and (c) association between cumulative lifetime adversity and other constructs (e.g., anxiety and depression). We used existing data from the Hispanic Community Health Survey/Study of Latinos-Sociocultural Ancillary Study, a national survey of Hispanic/Latinos living in the United States (N = 3,296). Results from confirmatory factor analyses indicated that a five-factor bifactor measurement model for cumulative lifetime adversity fit the data adequately (e.g., comparative fit index = .91, root mean square error of approximation = .04, standardized root mean square residual = .07). Results from multigroup confirmatory factor analyses suggested that the measurement model functioned similarly across Hispanic/Latino subgroups, providing evidence for measurement invariance. The model also displayed convergent and discriminant validity based on associations with other constructs. We discuss implications for advancing the precision of assessment instruments for lifetime adversity with populations with high within-group diversity. We investigated the safety of using umbilical cord-lining stem cells for liver regeneration and tested a novel method for stem cell delivery. Stem cells are known by their ability to repair damaged tissues and have the potential to be used as regenerative therapies. The umbilical cord's outer lining membrane is known to be a promising source of multipotent stem cells and can be cultivated in an epithelial cell growth medium to produce cell populations which possess the properties of both epithelial cells and embryonic stem cells-termed cord-lining epithelial cells (CLEC). Hepatocytes are epithelial cells of the liver and their proliferation upon injury is the main mechanism in restoring the liver. Earlier studies conducted showed CLEC can be differentiated into functioning hepatocyte-like cells (HLC) and can survive in immunologically competent specimens. In this study, we chose a porcine model to investigate CLEC as a treatment modality for liver failure. We selected 16 immune competent Yorkshire-Dutch Landrace pigs, with a mean weight of 40.
