© 2020 British Small Animal Veterinary Association.Robert Fine was among the most original social theorists in Britain of the past 30 years, and the aim of this paper is to offer a first systematic assessment of his intellectual contribution. There are sound intellectual reasons to explore Fine's scholarship. He maintained a problematic relation with mainstream sociology and, against the reduction of sociology to questions of method, culture, or class, he argued that sociologists must continue to ask difficult normative questions as part of the social world they ought to explain. And there are also pressing political concerns that justify a reconsideration of his writings. Global politics is currently marked by a populist wave that decries the very ideas and values that were central to Fine's social theory the need to uphold the rule of law at home and abroad, the politics of cosmopolitan solidarity, and the significance of antisemitism and its relationships with different forms of authoritarian politics. HHT inhibitor chemical structure My main argument is that there is a dialectics of universality that drives forward Fine's intellectual project. By this, I mean that a universalistic idea of humanity-an all-inclusive conception of all human beings-is the most important normative intuition of modern times. This idea of humanity moves forward in history through a dual process of emancipation and domination successful forms of social, legal, and political inclusion help make visible previous dynamics of exclusion but may also create or recreate discriminatory practices. Building on the work of French historian Michael Löwy on heterodox Jewish thinkers, I explain the three main tenets of Fine's work (a) his reconstruction of critical social theory; (b) the notion of cosmopolitan solidarity; and (c) the significance and main features of modern antisemitism. © 2020 London School of Economics and Political Science. The human dopamine transporter (hDAT) participates in dopamine homeostasis by clearing dopamine from the extracellular space using secondary active transport. Dysregulation of hDAT has been reported to be associated with different neuropsychiatric disorders. Dopamine transporter deficiency syndrome (DTDS) is a complex disease caused by defects in dopamine uptake within the synaptic cleft and patients manifest parkinsonian features. The extracellular loops are crucial for DAT activity and defects in these regions disturb dopamine transport. In the present study, a 3.5-year-old female in a consanguineous Iranian family with an initial diagnosis of gait imbalance and speech delay has been identified. We utilized whole-exome sequencing (WES) to identify the possible genetic defect(s). WES identified a novel homozygous in-frame indel variant, c.1139_1150del; p.(Gly380_Lys384delinsGlu), in the SLC6A3 gene (NM_001044.4), as the most likely disease-susceptibility variant. This variant is located in extracellular loop 4 (EL4) of the DAT protein. Our study highlights the role of extracellular loops and shows the EL4 of hDAT as a critical region for the protein activity. The identified variant in the EL4 region of DAT is predicted to compromise DAT function and may lead to DTDS in this case. link2 However, complementary studies are required to confirm. © 2020 John Wiley & Sons Ltd/University College London. While Zika virus outbreaks raised the concern about rare viral infections in human, attention should also be paid to other Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) inducing viruses. This study aims to search for other flaviviruses likely to be associated with GBS. link3 Amino acid (aa) sequence matching analysis was conducted to identify viruses molecularly similar to the Zika virus and human GBS-related proteins. A systematic review of clinical literature was performed to summarize the clinical findings of the GBS-associated flaviviruses identified in the aa sequence matching analysis. It was found that more than 10 pentapeptides were shared between 9 flaviviruses, Zika virus, and human GBS-related proteins. Twenty-six articles totaling 42 clinical cases were eligible for inclusion in the systematic review concerning the nine flaviviruses identified. While some patients showed signs of encephalitis, 5 out of 42 cases demonstrated typical GBS symptoms. Public health professionals should be aware of other GBS-associated flaviviruses and GBS cases with mild symptoms. © 2020 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.PURPOSE To provide a proof of principle of a Pareto-based method to automatically generate optimal intensity-modulated proton therapy (IMPT) plans for various noncoplanar beam orientations. METHODS A novel multicriteria beam orientation optimization (MCBOO) method was developed to generate Pareto database of optimal plans. The MCBOO method automatically explores the beam orientations and the scalarization parameters of the IMPT plans simultaneously. The MCBOO method is based on multicriteria bilevel optimization (i.e., hierarchical optimization with two nested levels, named the upper and lower level optimization). In MCBOO, the upper level optimization explores the noncoplanar beam orientation space, while the lower level explores the scalarization parameters for a given beam orientation. Differential evolution method was used in both levels, and the Pareto optimal plans were aggregated from the bilevel optimizations to construct the Pareto database. The MCBOO method was implemented on a multinode multi-GPU cto the manual plan. The selected MCBOO plans showed a reduction in dose to multiple organs at risk vs the manual plan with a maximum value which ranged between 10.8 and 12.9 Gy for the three patients. The trade-off of the OAR dose reduction resulted in higher dose to no more than one OAR for each of the selected MCBOO plans vs the manual plan. The maximum dose increase in the MCBOO plans over the manual plan ranged from 7.8 to 11.8 Gy. CONCLUSIONS A novel multicriteria beam orientation optimization method was developed and tested on three IMPT patient cases. The method automatically generates Pareto plans database by exploring the noncoplanar beam orientations. The method was able to identify beam orientations with Pareto optimal plans that are comparable to the manually created plans with varying objective trade-offs. © 2020 American Association of Physicists in Medicine.OBJECTIVE Future time perspective (FTP) refers to individuals' perceptions of the future as either open-ended or limited. Despite well-documented individual differences in FTP across the adult life span, little is known about short-term variations of FTP within individuals and the within-person associations between FTP and affective experiences. METHOD Study 1 used data from a daily diary study over 10 days (N = 564) with a wide age range across the adult life span (M = 48.30). Study 2 used data from an ambulatory assessment study over 10 days (N = 136) obtained from healthy older adults (M = 70.45). RESULTS Findings suggest that 10% to 20% of the total variance in FTP was within-person and 29% to 62% of the total variance in affect was within-person. Multilevel modeling showed that occasions with a more open-ended FTP were occasions with more positive affect, energetic arousal, calmness, and positive valence, and less negative affect. Age moderated the within-person associations between FTP and positive and negative affect as well as energetic arousal, with weaker associations for older adults. CONCLUSIONS This research demonstrates the importance of looking at both within-person and between-person differences with respect to the associations between FTP and affective experiences in daily life. © 2020 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.The PII superfamily consists of signal transduction proteins found in all domains of life. Canonical PII proteins sense the cellular energy state through the competitive binding of ATP and ADP, and carbon/nitrogen balance through 2-oxoglutarate binding. The ancestor of Archaeplastida inherited its PII signal transduction protein from an ancestral cyanobacterial endosymbiont. Over the course of evolution, plant PII proteins acquired a glutamine-sensing C-terminal extension, subsequently present in all Chloroplastida PII proteins. The PII proteins of various algal strains (red, green, and non-photosynthetic algae) have been systematically investigated with respect to their sensory and regulatory properties. Comparisons of the PII proteins from different phyla of oxygenic phototrophs (cyanobacteria, red algae, Chlorophyta and higher plants) have yielded insights into their evolutionary conservation versus adaptive properties. The highly conserved role of the controlling enzyme of arginine biosynthesis, N-acetyl-L-glutamate kinase (NAGK), as a main PII-interactor has been demonstrated across oxygenic phototrophs of cyanobacteria and Archaeplastida. In addition, the PII signaling system of red algae has been identified as an evolutionary intermediate between that of Cyanobacteria and Chloroplastida. In this review, we consider recent advances in understanding metabolic signaling by PII proteins of the plant kingdom. This article is protected by copyright. In consideration of the recent findings, we conducted an updated meta-analysis to assess the association between acrylamide intake and renal cell carcinoma risk. RESULTS PubMed, EMBASE, and Cochrane databases have been used to identify epidemiological studies on dietary acrylamide intake and renal cell carcinoma risk. This meta-analysis study included eight studies, 2843 cases, and 309 920 controls/participants. We performed meta-analyses to calculate the summary relative risk (RR) for the highest versus lowest intake of dietary acrylamide. No meaningful association was found for renal cell carcinoma; RR was 1.12 (95% confidence interval (CI) 0.97-1.28). Among participants who never smoked, no association was found between dietary acrylamide and renal cell carcinoma; the RR for highest versus lowest intake of dietary acrylamide was 1.11 (95% CI 0.93-1.32). CONCLUSION This meta-analysis study indicates that dietary acrylamide is not related to the risk of renal cell carcinoma. © 2020 Society of Chemical Industry. © 2020 Society of Chemical Industry.OBJECTIVE The aims of the present study were to compare the microbial differences between peri-implant mucositis sites with or without suppuration, and to construct a classification model with microbiota. METHODS Twenty-four implants with peri-implant mucositis were divided into suppuration (SUP) group and non-suppuration (Non-SUP) group. Clinical assessments of bleeding index, probing depth, suppuration following probing (SUP) were recorded. Submucosal samples were collected from mesiobuccal sites and distobuccal sites, and analyzed by 16S rRNA gene sequencing. Generalized linear mixed model was used to adjust age, gender, location of implants, and intraindividual correlation. RESULTS It was demonstrated that the microbial richness was lower in SUP group. The relative abundance of some pathogenic taxa, such as genera of Fusobacterium, Tannerella, and Peptostreptococcus, were significantly higher in SUP group than Non-SUP group. In addition, SUP group had less Gram-positive bacteria, aerobic bacteria, and more metabolic pathway related to life activity.
