The processes of the deposition of carbon coatings on PDMS (polydimethylsiloxane) substrates using plasma techniques are widely used in a large number of studies, in applications ranging from electronic to biological. That is why the potential improvement of their functional properties, including tribological properties, seems very interesting. This paper presents an analysis of the impact of plasma pre-treatment on the properties of the produced diamond-like carbon (DLC) coatings, including changes in the coefficients of friction and wear rates. The initial modification processes were performed using two different techniques based on low-pressure plasma (RF PACVD, radio-frequency plasma-assisted chemical vapour deposition) and dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma. The effects of the above-mentioned treatments on the geometric structure of the PDMS surface and its water contact angles and stability over time were determined. The basic properties of the DLC coatings produced on unmodified substrates were compared to those of the coatings subjected to plasma pre-treatment. The most interesting effects in terms of tribological properties were achieved after the DBD process and production of DLC coatings, achieving a decrease in wear rates to 2.45 × 10-8 mm3/Nm. The tests demonstrate that the cross-linking of the polymer substrate occurs during plasma pre-treatment.Background In low-income countries such as Benin, most people have poor access to healthcare services. There is scarcity of evidence about barriers to accessing healthcare services in Benin. Therefore, we examined the magnitude of the problem of access to healthcare services and its associated factors. Methods We utilized data from the 2017-2018 Benin Demographic and Health Survey (n = 15,928). We examined the associations between the demographic and socioeconomic characteristics of women using multilevel logistic regression. The outcome variable for the study was problem of access to healthcare service. Adjusted odds ratios (AORs) with 95% confidence intervals (95% CI) were estimated. Results Overall, 60.4% of surveyed women had problems in accessing healthcare services. Partner's education (AOR = 0.70; 95% CI; 0.55-0.89), economic status (AOR = 0.59; 95% CI; 0.47-0.73), marital status (AOR = 0.44; 95% CI; 0.39-0.51), and parity (AOR = 1.85; 95% CI; 1.45-2.35) were significant individual-level factors associated with problem of access to healthcare. Region (AOR = 5.24; 95% CI; 3.18-8.64) and community literacy level (AOR = 0.69; 95% CI; 0.51-0.94) were the main community-level risk factors. Conclusions Enhancing husband education through adult education programs, economic empowerment of women, enhancing national education coverage, and providing priority for unmarried and multipara women need to be considered. Additionally, there is the need to ensure equity-based access to healthcare services across regions.Novel calcium phosphate cements containing a mixture of four amino acids, glycine, proline, hydroxyproline and either lysine or arginine (CAL, CAK) were characterized and used for treatment of artificial osteochondral defects in knee. It was hypothesized that an enhanced concentration of extracellular collagen amino acids (in complex mixture), in connection with bone cement in defect sites, would support the healing of osteochondral defects with successful formation of hyaline cartilage and subchondral bone. Calcium phosphate cement mixtures were prepared by in situ reaction in a planetary ball mill at aseptic conditions and characterized. It was verified that about 30-60% of amino acids remained adsorbed on hydroxyapatite particles in cements and the addition of amino acids caused around 60% reduction in compressive strength and refinement of hydroxyapatite particles in their microstructure. Three main molecular studies Collisson et al. 2011, Moffitt et al. 2015 and Bailey et al. 2016 have found specific gene signatures, which identify different molecular subtypes of pancreatic cancer and provide a comprehensive stratification for both a personalized treatment or to identify potential druggable targets. Several studies have suggested that oxidative stress might contribute to increasing the hepatotoxicity of OTA, and several antioxidants, including curcumin (CURC), have been tested to counteract the toxic hepatic action of OTA in various classes of animals. Therefore, the present study was designed to evaluate the protective effect of CURC, a bioactive compound with different therapeutic properties on hepatic injuries caused by OTA in rat animal models. CURC effects were examined in Sprague Dawley rats treated with CURC (100 mg/kg), alone or in combination with OTA (0.5 mg/kg), by gavage daily for 14 days. At the end of the experiment, rats treated with OTA showed alterations in biochemical parameters and oxidative stress in the liver. CURC dosing significantly attenuated oxidative stress and lipid peroxidation versus the OTA group. Furthermore, liver histological tests showed that CURC reduced the multifocal lymphoplasmacellular hepatitis, the periportal fibrosis, and the necrosis observed in the OTA group. This study provides evidence that CURC can preserve OTA-induced oxidative damage in the liver of rats.While the association of vascular calcification with inferior patient outcomes in kidney transplant recipients is well-established, the association with graft outcomes has received less attention. With this dual-centre cohort study, we aimed to determine the clinical impact of recipient pre-transplant aorto-iliac calcification, measured on non-contrast enhanced computed tomography (CT)-imaging within three years prior to transplantation (2005-2018). We included 547 patients (61.4% male, age 60 (interquartile range 51-68) years), with a median follow-up of 3.1 (1.4-5.2) years after transplantation. The aorto-iliac calcification score (CaScore) was inversely associated with one-year estimated-glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) in univariate linear regression analysis (standard β -3.3 (95% CI -5.1 to -1.5, p less then 0.0001), but not after adjustment for potential confounders, including donor and recipient age (p = 0.077). In multivariable Cox regression analyses, a high CaScore was associated with overall graft failure (p = 0.004) and death with a functioning graft (p = 0.002), but not with death-censored graft failure and graft function decline. This study demonstrated that pre-transplant aorto-iliac calcification is associated with one-year eGFR in univariate, but not in multivariable linear regression analyses. Moreover, this study underlines that transplantation in patients with a high CaScore does not result in earlier transplant function decline or worse death censored graft survival, although ongoing efforts for the prevention of death with a functioning graft remain essential.The endovascular treatment of renal artery aneurysms (RAAs) has lower morbidity and shorter stay lengths compared to surgical repair. Here, we describe coil packing with or without remodeling and assess outcomes and complications. We retrospectively identified the 19 consecutive preventive endovascular RAA coil embolizations done in 18 patients at our center in 2010-2020. Patient and aneurysm characteristics, technical success rate, complications, and recurrences were recorded. Mean patient age was 63 ± 13 years. The RAA was >1.5 cm in 11 cases, and in four cases, the aneurysm-to-parent artery size ratio was >2. Simple coiling was performed for 11 (57.9%) aneurysms, stent-assisted coiling for seven (36.8%) aneurysms, and balloon-assisted coiling for one (5.3%) aneurysm. Technical success rate was 100%. Complete definitive RAA exclusion was achieved with a single procedure for 17 (89.5%) aneurysms, whereas two (10.5%) aneurysms required a repeat procedure. Four minor complications occurred but resolved with no long-term consequences.
