Pulmonary arteriovenous malformations (PAVMs) are rare vascular structures providing direct capillary-free communications between pulmonary arteries and veins. Embolotherapy is indicated as a front-line therapy. We report an unusual long-term complication of coil embolization for a 44-year-old woman with hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia (HHT) who had repeatedly undergone the procedures for her PAVMs. She expectorated the coil which had been placed 12 years earlier and migrated to the bronchus according to the chest radiogram and bronchoscopy. Histology of the resected lung segment suggested the cavity communicating with the bronchus was the consequence of abscess formation around the coils. Even after technically successful embolization to PAVMs, long term follow-up should be necessary paying attention to the symptoms and imaging to avoid massive hemoptysis and subsequent emergency surgery.
is an important oil-yielding woody plant native to China. Tea oil extracted from the seeds is rich in health-beneficial compounds. Huajin is a high-yielding elite variety of
, with large fruits and remarkable resilience, widely cultivated in southern China; however, its seedling quality tends to be uneven. At present, techniques such as grafting, and cuttings are primarily adopted to propagate
. These approaches are susceptible to environmental constraints owing to the long growth period, resulting in the lack of
seedlings. Methods to make the cultivation more economical are warranted; this can be facilitated by tissue culture technology to provide good-quality seedlings in a short time.
In vitro cultured plantlets of
Huajin were exposed to red light (RL), blue light (BL), redblue light at a 41 ratio (R4B1), and redblue light at a 14 ratio (R1B4); white light (WL) was used as the control treatment. To investigate the influence of light spectral quality on the proliferation coefficient, photosynality propagation of Huajin shoots can be achieved by culturing the plants in vitro under a combination of red and blue (41) lights. Previous studies have shown that red and blue lights improve rooting and transplanting rates of tissue culture seedlings. Hence, future research should focus on the effect of light quality on rooting and transplanting of tissue culture plantlets of Huajin and its specific molecular mechanisms.Activation of the cannabinoid CB1 receptor induces neuroprotection against brain ischemia/reperfusion injury (IRI); however, the mechanism is still unknown. In this study, we used oxygen-glucose deprivation/reoxygenation (OGD/R)-induced injury in neuronal cells and middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO)-induced brain IRI in rats to mimic ischemic brain injury, and hypothesized that the CB1 receptor agonist arachidonyl-2-chloroethylamide (ACEA) would protect ischemic neurons by inhibiting mitochondrial fission via dynamin-related protein 1 (Drp1). We found that OGD/R injury reduced cell viability and mitochondrial function, increased lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) release, and increased cell apoptosis, and mitochondrial fission. Notably, ACEA significantly abolished the OGD/R-induced neuronal injuries described above. Similarly, ACEA significantly reversed MCAO-induced increases in brain infarct volume, neuronal apoptosis and mitochondrial fission, leading to the recovery of neurological functions. The neuroprotective effects of ACEA were obviously blocked by coadministration of the CB1 receptor antagonist AM251 or by the upregulation of Drp1 expression, indicating that ACEA alleviates brain IRI via the CB1-Drp1 pathway. Our findings suggest that the CB1 receptor links aberrant mitochondrial fission to brain IRI, providing a new therapeutic target for brain IRI treatment.[This corrects the article DOI 10.1155/2019/8060962.].Cutaneous involvement in canine leishmaniasis, caused by Leishmania infantum, is the most frequent clinical manifestation of the zoonotic infectious disease. A 4-month-old female Shih Tzu-terrier dog with significant weight loss and depression and chronic erosive skin lesions around eyes and the area above the nose was presented to the Semnan University Veterinary Hospital teaching, Semnan, Iran. The main clinicopathological findings included marked leukocytosis, neutrophilia, left shift, monocytosis, mild hypoproteinemia, and hypoalbuminemia. The diagnosis of leishmaniasis was performed based on the presence of a large number of Leishmania amastigotes in skin Fine Needle Aspiration (FNA). The dog was euthanized and sent to the autopsy department for further investigation.Acne vulgaris is one of the most common chronic inflammatory skin diseases. Encorafenib chemical structure Bergamot and sweet orange are rich in nutritional and functional components, which exhibit antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antiapoptotic effect. The aim of this study was to evaluate the potential effect of bergamot and sweet orange (juice and essential oil) on acne vulgaris caused by excessive secretion of androgen. Eighty male golden hamsters were randomly divided into 10 groups and received low or high dose of bergamot and sweet orange juice and essential oil, physiological saline, and positive drugs for four weeks, respectively. Results showed that all interventions could improve acne vulgaris by reducing the growth rate of sebaceous gland spots, inhibiting TG accumulation, decreasing the release of inflammatory cytokines (notably reducing IL-1α levels), promoting apoptosis in the sebaceous gland, and decreasing the ratio of T/E2. Among them, bergamot and orange essential oil may have better effects (dose dependent) on alleviating acne vulgaris than the corresponding juice. In view of the large population of acne patients and the widespread use of sweet orange and bergamot, this study is likely to exert an extensive and far-reaching influence. The enhancement of water efficiency requires controlling the high demand for irrigated agriculture which depends on improving the capabilities to accurately simulate the water cycle and its components. Among these, evapotranspiration is widely studied to estimate reference evapotranspiration (ET0) but the performance and accuracy of the estimates vary. Moreover, these estimates require some hardly available or misrepresentative meteorological data which lead, mainly in arid and semi-arid areas, to errors and inaccuracies. Here, ET0 of five empirical temperature-based estimates are compared to the standard FAO Penman-Monteith estimate (ET0-PM) under the representative and wide-ranging settings of 22 weather stations of Morocco. We found a significant positive correlation between ET0-PM and solar radiation, average and maximum air temperatures. We have determined that the Dorji estimate shows relatively better precision and stability while it requires advanced calibration to accommodate arid and semi-arid conditions. After hundreds of calibration repetitions, we concluded a new estimate (ET0-Hadria) which demonstrates an overall improvement in the quality and precision of ET0 assessment, mainly in flat areas. This estimate improved the precision and enhanced the precision in almost 68% of the stations. This simple calibrated estimate is an accurate, improved, and transferable tool achieved through a precise methodical process of selection and configuration. To evaluate the imaging features of subungual glomus tumors using 18 MHz high-frequency ultrasound with CDFI (Color Doppler Flow Imaging). 20 patients treated by surgical resection and examined by ultrasound between January 2008 and December 2019. All eligible cases are divided into two groups Group A used the probe frequency of 9-14 MHz from January 2008 to December 2014, and Group B used the probe frequency of 18 MHz from January 2015 to December 2019. Patient demographics, clinical records, pathologic specimens and sonography features were reviewed. 50% of tumors in Group A and 100% of tumors in Group B showed clear boundary and regular shape. Blood flow signals were identified inside 50% tumors in Group A (3 in 6), all 14 cases with blood flow signals detected in Group B (14 in 14,100%). 2 cases were misdiagnosed and 1 case escaped diagnosis in Group A, no case was misdiagnosed in Group B. The accuracy of diagnosis rate of Group B is significantly higher than that of Group A. 18-MHz ultrasound combined with CDFI may be a practical useful tool for detecting subungual glomus tumors. More importantly 18-MHz ultrasound can obviously improve the diagnostic accuracy.Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is characterized by impairment of social communication, repetitive behavior and restrictive interest. The risk of ASD is strongly associated with the prenatal period; for instance, the administration of valproic acid (VPA) to pregnant mothers increases risk of ASD in the child. Patients with ASD often exhibit an alteration in the autonomic nervous system. In this study, we assessed the autonomic nervous activity at each prenatal developmental stage of model mice of ASD treated with VPA, to clarify the relationship between timing of exposure and ASD symptoms. The assessment of the autonomic nervous activity was performed based on the analysis of electrocardiography data collected from fetal and adult mice. Interestingly, VPA model mouse fetuses exhibited a significantly lower activity of the sympathetic nervous system. In contrast, sympathetic nervous activity at P0 was significantly higher. In adult VPA model mice, the parasympathetic activity of female VPA mice was suppressed. Moreover, female VPA mice showed reduced the parasympathetic activity after exposure to restraint stress. These results suggest that the autonomic nervous activity of VPA model mice was altered from the fetal stage, and that the assessment of autonomic nervous activities at an early developmental stage could be useful for the understanding of ASD.Photoreceptors, the primary site of phototransduction in the retina, require energy and metabolites to constantly renew their outer segments. They preferentially consume most glucose through aerobic glycolysis despite possessing abundant mitochondria and enzymes for oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS). Exactly how photoreceptors balance aerobic glycolysis and mitochondrial OXPHOS to regulate their survival is still unclear. We crossed rhodopsin-Cre mice with hexokinase 2 (HK2)-floxed mice to study the effect of knocking down HK2, the first rate-limiting enzyme in glycolysis, on retinal health and metabolic remodeling. Immunohistochemistry and Western blots were performed to study changes in photoreceptor-specific proteins and key enzymes in glycolysis and the tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle. Changes in retinal structure and function were studied by optical coherence tomography and electroretinography. Mass spectrometry was performed to profile changes in 13C-glucose-derived metabolites in glycolysis and the TCA cycle. We found that knocking down HK2 in rods led to age-related photoreceptor degeneration, evidenced by reduced expression of photoreceptor-specific proteins, age-related reductions of the outer nuclear layer, photoreceptor inner and outer segments and impaired electroretinographic responses. Loss of HK2 in rods led to upregulation of HK1, phosphorylation of pyruvate kinase muscle isozyme 2, mitochondrial stress proteins and enzymes in the TCA cycle. Mass spectrometry found that the deletion of HK2 in rods resulted in accumulation of 13C-glucose along with decreased pyruvate and increased metabolites in the TCA cycle. Our data suggest that HK2-mediated aerobic glycolysis is indispensable for the maintenance of photoreceptor structure and function and that long-term inhibition of glycolysis leads to photoreceptor degeneration.
