CIBERSORT analysis revealed that the amount of NK cells decreased when MITD1 expression was high. CONCLUSIONS The identification of MITD1 as a new biomarker for HCC could help elucidate how changes in cytokinesis and the immune environment promote liver cancer development. With further analysis, MITD1 may be able to serve as a predictor for human HCC prognosis. We assessed the effects of curcumin, rutin, and the association of rutin and curcumin in organs of hyperlipidemic rats. Rutin and curcumin have notable antioxidant and anti-inflammatory actions, so we hypothesized that their association would enhance their beneficial effects. Hyperlipidemia results in lipotoxicity and affects several organs. Lipotoxicity is not only an outcome of lipid accumulation in non-adipose tissues but also a result of the hyperlipidemia-associated inflammation and oxidative stress. Wistar rats were treated with rutin and curcumin for 30 days before the induction of acute hyperlipidemia by Poloxamer-407. After 36 h, the animals were euthanized for collection of blood and organs. Untreated hyperlipidemic rats showed higher uric acid and albumin levels in the serum and increased spleen size and ADA activity. Rutin, curcumin and the association reduced the spleen size by 20% and ADA activity by 23, 28, and 27%, respectively. Rats pretreated with rutin showed reduced lipid damage in the liver (40%) and the kidney (44%), and the protein damage was also reduced in the liver (75%). The lipid damage was decreased by 40% in the liver, and 56% in the kidney of rats pretreated with curcumin. The association reduced lipid damage by 50% and 36%, and protein damage by 77% and 64% in the liver and kidney, respectively. Rutin better prevented the decrease in the antioxidant defenses, increasing SOD by 34%, CAT by 246% and GST by 84% in the liver, as well as SOD by 119% and GST by 190% in the kidney. Also, analyses of blood and spleen parameters of untreated and pretreated non-hyperlipidemic rats showed no signs of immunotoxicity. Despite showing protective effects, the association did not perform better than the isolated compounds. Here, we showed that rutin and/or curcumin reestablished the immune homeostasis and redox balance disrupted by hyperlipidemia in peripheral organs of rats. OBJECTIVES To investigate the diagnostic accuracy of contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) and to search for cut-offs in caesarean scar pregnancy (CSP) patients for making quantitative diagnoses. STUDY DESIGN Thirty patients in the first trimester of pregnancy were enrolled in our study. They were suspected as being at risk of caesarean scar pregnancy by conventional ultrasound and insisted on abortions. Transvaginal ultrasonography (TVU) and CEUS were performed, and parameters were analysed on the time-intensity curve (TIC). Laparotomy, laparoscopy, hysteroscopy or curettage under the guidance of ultrasound were performed, and pathological finding of villi in the uterine scar is the gold standard for a diagnosis of CSP. The area under the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve (AUC) was used to estimate the probability of the correct prediction of CSP. RESULTS CSP was diagnosed in 27 patients pathological diagnosis revealed villus tissue in the scar. The peak intensity ratios of caesarean scar to myometrium have the overall best diagnostic performances (AUC 0.877, 95 % CI 0.74-1.00). Using a cut-off value of 1.08 for the peak intensity ratio of caesarean scar to myometrium, the diagnosis sensitivity, specificity, PPV and NPV for CSP were 77.8, 100, 100, and 81.8 %, respectively. CONCLUSIONS CEUS offers good diagnostic performance, and the peak intensity ratio of caesarean scar to myometrium can be used as a quantitative index to diagnose CSP accurately. Inference using mathematical models of infectious disease dynamics can be an invaluable tool for the interpretation and analysis of epidemiological data. However, researchers wishing to use this tool are faced with a choice of models and model types, simulation methods, inference methods and software packages. Given the multitude of options, it can be challenging to decide on the best approach. Here, we delineate the choices and trade-offs involved in deciding on an approach for inference, and discuss aspects that might inform this decision. We provide examples of inference with a dataset of influenza cases using the R packages pomp and rbi. V.BACKGROUND Children and adolescents in foster care show a high prevalence of cumulative traumatic experiences (CTE), symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and symptoms related to disturbances in self-organization (DSO). PTSD and DSO constitute the ICD-11 diagnosis Complex PTSD (CPTSD). Sense of coherence (SOC) has been shown to alleviate the impact of CTE. OBJECTIVE This study aimed to investigate the mediating role of SOC in the relationship between CTE, PTSD, and DSO. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING Trauma history (CTE), PTSD, DSO and SOC were assessed in a sample of 140 children and adolescents in foster care aged 10-18 using self-report questionnaires. METHOD Mediation analysis determined the direct, indirect and total effect of the mediation of SOC in the relationship between CTE, PTSD and DSO. RESULTS The results showed no mediation of SOC in the relationship between CTE and PTSD symptoms (indirect effect of b = -.001, 95 %CI -.088-.086). However, SOC mediated the relationship between CTE and DSO symptoms (indirect effect b = .128, 95 %CI 0.045-.211). CONCLUSIONS Those results may point to a promotive function of SOC for the overall development and different areas of self-organization, but not for PTSD symptoms. It is possible that the influence of the trauma on symptoms of PTSD is too pervasive for the promotive function of SOC. The present findings strengthen the assumption that PTSD and DSO are separate second-order factors, which characterize different groups of trauma survivors. The present findings are vital to inform tailored prevention and intervention strategies for survivors of early CTE. OBJECTIVE Twenty-five years ago, this journal published two articles reporting the development and initial validation of the 20-Item Toronto Alexithymia Scale (TAS-20). Since then the literature on alexithymia has burgeoned with the vast majority of this research using the TAS-20, including multiple language translations of the scale. METHOD In this article we review the psychometric literature evaluating various aspects of the reliability and validity of the TAS-20 and examine some of the controversies surrounding the scale and the construct it assesses. We reflect on the ways in which the TAS-20 has advanced the measurement of the construct and theory of alexithymia. We also discuss recent developments and some future directions for the measurement of alexithymia. RESULTS Although not without some controversy, the preponderance of the accumulated evidence over a 25-year period supports various aspects of the reliability and validity of the TAS-20, including findings from confirmatory factor analytic and convergent and discriminant validity studies which are consistent with Nemiah et al.'s (Nemiah et al., 1976 [3]) and Taylor and colleagues (Taylor et al., 1997 [9]) theoretical formulations and definition of the alexithymia construct. CONCLUSIONS Based on the accumulated empirical evidence of 25 years, we conclude that the TAS-20 is a reliable and valid instrument and accurately reflects and measures the construct as it was originally defined by Nemiah et al. Nemiah et al. (1976) [3] as composed of deficits in affect awareness and expression and pensée opératoire (operational thinking). Clinicians and researchers can use the TAS-20 to confidently measure alexithymia, the roots of which have foundations in psychosomatic medicine. Early language exposure and shared parent-child reading, as assessed by maternal reading ability and fluency, affect the child's future language and cognitive abilities. The aim of the current study was to explore the association between maternal reading ability and fluency and diffusion properties of language- and cognition-related white matter tracts in their pre-school age children using diffusion tensor imaging (DTI). DTI data were acquired from fifteen girls (mean age 3.83 ± 0.49 years). Reading ability and fluency were assessed in their mothers. Effects of hemisphere and node on diffusion properties were measured at 100 points along white matter tracts related to language and cognitive abilities. Significant positive correlations were found between maternal reading ability and fractional anisotropy in left and right dorsal and ventral language and executive functions-related tracts, while maternal reading fluency was associated with higher fractional anisotropy in ventral tracts, mainly in the left hemisphere. Fractional Anisotropy was significantly higher in the left compared to the right arcuate, cingulum cingulate, and inferior longitudinal fasciculus and higher in the right compared to the left superior longitudinal fasciculus. Our results signify the importance of maternal reading as a facilitator of the child's future language and cognitive abilities. OBJECTIVE Pregnancy causes many changes in our body and some of them may affect our ability of learning and memory. We examined the cerebral cortical volume of brain during pregnancy and measured changes in the brain electrical activity and cerebral blood flow. METHOD 35 women (20 normal full-term primigravida and 15 non-pregnant women) received the Electroencephalography (EEG) and Transcranial Doppler ultrasonography (TCD). 8 non-pregnant women and 9 primigravida after vaginal delivery underwent brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) voluntarily within 24 h. RESULTS Compared with the non-pregnant, changes were shown by EEG through electrodes of T5, Pz, Cz, T6, F3 and F8. The results displayed increased activity in the central parietal area of pregnant women, while that in the temporoparietal junction decreased. The result of TCD revealed that pulsation index (PI) values of left and right internal and external carotid arteries were asymmetrical, but they all decreased in pregnancy. Atrophy of cortical volume had been found in many brain functional areas of pregnant women. The percentage of atrophy varied between 6.76% and 13.17%. CONCLUSION Atrophy of cerebral cortex, changes in cerebral blood flow and neuron electrophysiology may be the physiological basis of the emotional, cognitive changes in pregnant women. Distinguishing neurosarcoidosis (NS) from multiple sclerosis (MS) remains challenging and available parameters lack discriminatory power. Comprehensive flow cytometry data of blood and CSF leukocytes of patients with NS (n = 24), MS (n = 49) and idiopathic intracranial hypertension (IIH, n = 52) were analyzed by machine learning algorithms. NS featured a specific immune cell pattern with increased activated CD4+ T cells in CSF and increased plasma cells in blood. Combining blood and CSF parameters improved the differentiation. We thereby identify and independently validate a multi-dimensional model of blood and CSF supporting the difficult differential diagnosis between NS and MS.
