The aim of the study was to assess the inflammatory status at the presumed peak of the inflammatory phase in non-critically ill patients requiring admission for COVID-19.

Patients admitted with COVID-19 were prospectively enrolled. FDG PET/CT was performed from day 6 to day 14 of the onset of symptoms. Depending on FDG PET/CT findings, patients' profiles were classified as "inflammatory" or "low inflammatory." FDG PET/CT data were compared with chest CT evolution and short-term clinical outcome. All inflammatory sites were reported to screen potential extra-pulmonary tropism.

Thirteen patients were included. Maximum standardized uptake values ranged from 4.7 to 16.3 in lungs. All patients demonstrated increased mediastinal lymph nodes glucose uptake. Three patients (23%) presented mild nasopharyngeal, two patients (15%) bone marrow, and five patients (38%) splenic mild increase in glucose uptake. No patient had significant digestive focal or segmental glucose uptake. There was no significant physiological myocardial glucose uptake in all patients except one. There was no correlation between PET lung inflammatory status and chest CTevolution or short-term clinical outcome.

Inflammatory process at the presumed peak of the inflammatory phase in COVID-19 patients is obvious in FDG PET/CT scans. Glucose uptake is heterogeneous and typically focused on lungs.

Patellofemoral pain syndrome (PFPS) is twice as prevalent in females as males, yet a few studies have evaluated differences in quadriceps muscle control between sexes or across force levels. This study investigated sex differences in quadriceps EMG onset times and amplitude at different force levels during isometric knee extension in asymptomatic males and females and in females with PFPS.

Thirteen healthy males, 12 healthy females, and 10 females with PFPS performed isometric knee extension ramp contractions at 25%, 50%, and 75% of maximal voluntary contraction (MVC). Surface EMG was recorded from the vastus lateralis (VL), vastus medialis oblique (VMO), vastus medialis (VM), and rectus femoris (RF).

Healthy females showed delayed VL (222 ± 67ms, p = 0.002), VMO (357 ± 101ms, p = 0.001), and VM (258 ± 62ms, p < 0.001) recruitment in comparison with healthy males. Healthy males activated the VL earlier than the VM (156 ± 51ms, p = 0.02) and RF (379 ± 74ms, p < 0.001), and at a similar time as the VMO; healthy females activated the VL earlier than the VM (192 ± 53ms, p = 0.004) and VMO (239 ± 73ms, p = 0.01). A lower VMOVL activation ratio was found at 25% MVC (p < 0.001) than at higher force levels.

The aim of the study is to examine the relationships between increments in resting blood flow and isometric maximal voluntary contraction (MVC) force reduction, muscle soreness, and swelling after eccentric contractions (ECs).

Twenty-one young healthy men (age 20.8 ± 1.6years; height 172.0 ± 5.3cm; weight 64.9 ± 7.7kg) were recruited for this study. link2 All participants performed right arm ECs in five sets of 20 repetitions with 3min of rest between the sets. The dumbbell weight corresponded to 60% MVC force of isometric contraction of elbow flexors with 90° elbow joint angle. Resting forearm blood flow (FBF), the MVC force, the muscle thickness (MT), and muscle soreness of elbow flexors, heart rate (HR), and blood pressure (BP) of brachial artery were measured before, 24 and 48h after ECs.

Average and peak resting FBF after ECs significantly changed from the average values before ECs (21% and 39% increase, respectively, P < 0.01). However, resting HR and BP were not significantly different after ECs. Average increase in resting FBF showed a significant relationship with average isometric MVC force reduction (r =  - 0.45, P < 0.05), peak isometric MVC force reduction (r =  - 0.48, P < 0.05), average muscle soreness (r = 0.49, P < 0.05), and peak muscle soreness (r = 0.49, P < 0.05). The metabolic benefits of the Mediterranean diet have been largely attributed to its olive oil content. Whether the ingested fat amount is relevant to these effects is not clear. link3 We thus compared the effects of high-fat and normal-fat intake of extra-virgin olive oil (EVOO) on the liver proteome.

Three groups of mice were fed for 12weeks with either normal-fat diets containing either soybean oil (control, C) or EVOO (NO) or a high-fat EVOO diet (HO). Body weight and food intake were measured weekly and serum parameters were analyzed. The liver was processed for data-independent acquisition mass spectrometry-based proteomics. The differentially expressed proteins among the groups were submitted to pathway enrichment analysis.

The consumption of HO diet reduced food intake and serum triglycerides, while it preserved body weight gain, adiposity, and glycemia. However, it increased serum cholesterol and liver mass. The proteomic analysis showed 98 altered proteins, which were allocated in 27 significantly enriched pathways. The pathway analysis suggested stimulation of mitochondrial and peroxissomal β-oxidation, and inhibition of lipid synthesis and gluconeogenesis in the HO group. Although the NO group failed to show significant liver proteome alterations, it presented reduced body fat, body weight gain, and serum triglycerides and glucose levels.

Urinary incontinence (UI) is one of the most serious problems during pregnancy and after delivery. It can influence the quality of life and cause psychological problems that lead to depression and decreased self-esteem. We aimed to investigate the maternal, obstetrical and neonatal risk factors of urinary incontinence 3 to 12months after childbirth.

The Cochrane Library, Medline, Science Direct and Web of Science were searched for studies published from the inception of the databases up to December 2019, including any observational full-text papers. All data were analyzed using Review Manager 5.3. Of 338 articles reviewed, 20 studies were considered for meta-analysis.

The results of our study showed that vaginal delivery in contrast to cesarean section (OR = 3.74, 95% CI [2.71, 5.15], P < 0.00001), UI in pregnancy (OR = 5.27, 95% CI [3.40, 8.17], P < 0.00001), episiotomy (OR = 1.23, 95% CI [1.05, 1.45], P < 0.01), perineal tear > grade 2, instrumental delivery in contrast to cesarean section, epidural or spinal anesthesia, maternal age, pre-pregnancy BMI and neonatal birthweight have a direct relationship with UI.

Previous case reports on vaginal calculi extraction have described the removal of small calculi facilitated via episiotomy or transabdominal incision. This surgical video demonstrates a novel technique of transvaginal extraction of a large calculus utilizing an ear, nose, and throat (ENT) mallet and osteotomes.

An 86-year-old female with urgency incontinence and limited mobility presented with obstipation and was found to have an 8.8cm vaginal calculus. She had a history of prior vaginal mesh exposure after a mid-urethral sling that was managed expectantly without surgical resection. Cystourethroscopy and anoscopy excluded fistula. The calculus was extracted utilizing an ENT mallet and osteotomes in < 90min, and no recurrent vaginal mesh exposure was identified.

The current study aims to assess the continence rate of a "second primary" midurethral sling (MUS) in women with recurrent/persistent stress urinary incontinence (SUI) after sling excision compared to a historical cohort who underwent a repeat MUS.

A retrospective cohort study of women who underwent excision of a primary MUS and placement of a "second primary" MUS from 2009 to 2016 compared to a historical cohort who underwent a repeat MUS from 2006 to 2009. The primary outcome was continence rate, defined as "not at all" or "somewhat" to Urogenital Distress Inventory (UDI-6) SUI subscale questions. Secondary outcomes included assessment of symptom severity (UDI-6), symptom-specific quality of life, Incontinence Impact Questionnaire (IIQ-7), Medical and Epidemiologic Aspects of Aging (MESA), and Patient Global Impression of Improvement (PGI-I).
