How to Replace a Kia Sportage Replacement Key

The key in many Kia models has the keyless entry feature built into. This key is similar to a remote control and can be exchanged with an Kia dealer.

Key fobs might stop working due to a variety of reasons, such as a dead battery, worn-out buttons signals, signal interference or water damage. Here are some helpful tips on how you can get your Kia Sportage replacement key working again.

How do you replace a remote key or smartkey

If your Kia is equipped with an intelligent key, remote key, push to start key, or a standard non-transponder key made of metal, the battery in these keys will eventually require replacing. This is especially true if the vehicle displays a message that indicates that the smart or remote key is not powered by the battery.

This is a relatively simple process. To replace the battery of the keyfob remove your mechanical key from the slit at the back of the fob. Then, you need to pry the cover open. Inside the key fob, there will be tiny screws that hold the battery in its place. Using a small screwdriver, remove the screw and remove the battery that was in place. Then, you can insert the new battery and close the hole in the key fob.

Once the new battery has been installed, turn the key fob off and back on in the ignition for a few times until the door locks cycle. You can then test the Kia's key fob to ensure it is working correctly.

How to replace the smart key

There is a possibility of having a standard keyfob, or a Smart Key, based on the model of Kia Sportage. The smart key comes with an embedded mechanical key blade, however, the standard key fob does not. Both key fobs are equipped with batteries that eventually require changing. It is a simple process that takes just two minutes.

Before you begin, you will want to ensure that you're on a level surface with adequate lighting and that your Kia is not on. Be aware that the fob contains tiny pieces that could be thrown off should you not be careful.

The release button for the small size is located on the lower backside. It will be either a circular silver button or a rectangular slot. You can open the key fob by pressing the button.

Once you have the key fob opened then you can remove the old battery, and replace it. The new battery should be a CR-2032 and can be purchased online or at your local auto parts store. When you are done you should be able to lock, unlock and start your vehicle with your key fob - even if your engine isn't running!
