How a VC Can Affect Your Heart

A lot of people experience occasional PVCs without any problems. If they happen frequently, PVCs may weaken your heart and increase your risk of heart failure.

A bundle of fibers located in the top right portion of your heart (the sinoatrial, or SA, node) usually controls your heart rhythm. Electrical signals are transmitted to the ventricles or lower chambers of your heart.

Causes

PVCs occur when the electrical impulse that typically initiates your heartbeat in a region known as the sinus node (also called the sinoatrial or SA Node) does not. Instead, the impulse starts in a different area of your heart called the ventricles and triggers an untimed beat. These extra beats are known as ventricular tachycardia and ventricular fibrillation. It may feel like the heart skipped a beat or feels fluttering. They can occur rarely, causing no symptoms, but they may be frequent enough to affect your quality of living. If they are very frequent or cause dizziness, weakness, or fatigue, your doctor could treat them with medication.

PVCs are generally safe and do not increase your risk of heart disease. Frequent PVCs however, may weaken the heart muscle over time. This is particularly relevant if they are triggered by a heart-related condition like dilated cardiomyopathy, or arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy, which may lead to symptomatic heart failure.

The symptoms of PVCs include a feeling that your heart beats faster or it flutters. You may feel exhausted. The fluttering may be more evident when you exercise or consume certain beverages or foods. People who experience chronic anxiety or stress may have more PVCs and certain drugs like amiodarone digoxin and cocaine can increase the chance of developing them.
